Arranged Marriage (Baldwin IV x Y/N)
Part 21
The candlelight in the hall flicks as the royal couple promptly passes by to meet with the queen mother. Lady (Y/N) is visibly perturbed as she quickens her pace and edgily mutters to her husband: ''I believe the gossip is the reason of the sudden meeting. The sooner we explain this blunder, the lesser our predicament will be.''
Just as they halt in front of the entrance to the countess's chambers, the door suddenly opens to reveal a maid holding a tray full of medications. ''Your majesties.'' - she greets them with a curtsy. ''Countess Agnes is already regaining her strength, owing to our queen's wonderful news. Allow me to extend my felicitations.''
Taken aback lady (Y/N) only gives a nod in acknowledgement of her kind words and with even more hesitation enters a large antechamber.
Countess Agnes, beaming with joy at the sight of her guests, waves at them to take a seat at the round table. ''Come, my dear children!''
Baldwin is first to welcome his mother with a peck on top of her hand. ''Mother, it gladdens my heart to see your wellbeing again.''
''I recovered only by dint of your great felicity. At first I found it unbelievable, but miracles happen, don't they? Especially when the two of you bonded instantly on the day of your first encounter.'' With that said the smirking countess picks up a little cup of tea as if in an attempt to regain her sedate demeanor which weakens even more by the view of the abashed youngsters now exchanging surreptitious glances.
The king, taking a deep breath in, leans forward in his armchair to calmly wander off the current matter of their discussion: ''Mother-'' But he pauses his bid to clarify the misunderstanding the moment his mother's visage twitches in pain and her fingers abruptly dig into the satin sash wrapped around her abdomen.
Although lady (Y/N) is hastier to give her aid, Baldwin doesn't sit idly and assists his wife in steading lady Agnes, who with a constrained grin jests: ''It seems I've been waiting with the meal for too long.''
Yet the queen doesn't seem to believe those words and at once examines vials filled in half with murky liquids. ''Countess Agnes, let me oversee your medications henceforward. The previous ones might not be effective.''
''Heavens! I told you, my dear child, to call me mother.''
Puzzled by her mother-in-law's acutely candid tone, lady (Y/N) hesitantly probes into the sudden return of their amity: ''But after that incident I thought I wasn't welcomed anymore-''
''That's what your wicked cousin wished to happen.'' - curtly interrupts her the countess, fiddling resoundingly with the silverware. ''The guards caught her maid sneaking around the stables, but the woman managed to swallow a poisonous pill before being questioned.''
When lady (Y/N) is about to delve into that inquiry, an abrupt squeak of the inlaid parquet floor draws everyone's attention toward a guard approaching the king to announce: ''My king, lord Balian of Ibelin has just arrived.''
Sighing pensively, Baldwin rises to his feet and clasps his hands behind his back before bidding the women farewell. ''I wish I could stay in your engaging company longer, but an urgent matter needs to be taken care of now.''
Frowned lady (Y/N) then gently grasps Baldwin's hand and says worriedly: ''You haven't eaten anything yet. Why don't you finish your meal first?''
Touched by her daughter-in-law's nurturance, countess Agnes reassures her guest: ''Do not worry, my dear child. I will ask my servant to bring him some repast.''
Nevertheless, heavy thoughts don't abandon the queen's mind as she reluctantly releases her hold on her beloved one, who tenderly caresses her check. ''You shouldn't worry so much, my dear.''
''Precisely!'' - cheerily chimes with her son lady Agnes. ''Especially when you're expecting a child.''
That statement leaves the queen speechless until Baldwin's leave. That's when she resolves to make an avowal: ''What if...''
''Hmm?''
''What if I'm not with child?''
In response, the chuckling countess reaches for each one bowl with copious refreshments to enlarge lady (Y/N)'s dinner portion. ''Instead of ruminating about what is obvious, my dear, try this oatmeal.'' Still, the queen remains motionless in her seat, so the noblewoman puts aside another fruit salad and inclines to say in a soothing voice: ''I believe your mother lectured you about pregnancy?''
''Well, I was told it requires some time to confirm it.''
''True, but do you know what are the first signs?''
Knitting her eyebrows in thought, lady (Y/N) contemplates for a few seconds before replying: ''My mother was treating a few pregnant women, each one displayed various signs...''
''Tell me then, when was the last time you had your monthly sickness?''
Lady (Y/N)'s eyes instantly widen at the realization it's been awhile since her last bleeding. ''If I'm not mistaken, it should be in a few days...''
''If it hasn't occurred thus far, that means we have only one answer.''
The queen no longer listens to the countess's lectures about motherhood when she cannot avert her focus from the pestering supposition that the gossip could be true. What if she's truly pregnant?
Without a word, she finishes her dinner and unhurriedly returns to her bedchamber, where has been awaiting her a great stillness of the night instead of the lulling embrace of her husband.
However, her truelove is too preoccupied with the state affairs to sneak out of the current meeting with knights and offer a shoulder of support for his troubled wife. The king is restively presiding over the prolonged deliberations which become with each hour more abstruse to be solved. Thankfully, his white hope for culminating the haphazard session soon arrives to the High Court in the image of his trusted friend - lord Balian of Ibelin. ''My lord?''
Beside the throne stands a presentable man in his late thirties. ''Balian.'' - addresses him companionably Baldwin. ''Always on the journey.''
''And always at your service.''
Once Balian reverentially escorts Baldwin to the midst of the podium, the quarreling crowd immediately retreats into silence, anticipating the ultimate order of their monarch: ''The time has come to pay a visit to Saladin. Remember, we're heading out to the foreign lands not to bring war but peace. Any falling afoul of that principle will be perceived as high treason.''
No one dares to speak up in this tense ambience except that one fearless lord of Ibelin: ''My lord, the later we set forth on the expedition, the higher the chance they'll reverse their decision. We shall leave immediately.''
''We'll leave at dawn.'' - sharply responds Baldwin. ''I haven't bid farewell to my wife yet.''
Balian opens his mouth to persist on his plan, but Baldwin is already heading back to his chambers.

It's my birthday! 🥳🎂🎉
Foulques d'Anjou (1092-1143).
Baldwin II died in Jerusalem on August 21, 1131, and the succession presented no problems. Recognized without difficulty as legitimate rulers by the High Court of the kingdom, Fulk and Melisende were crowned king and queen at the Holy Sepulchre on September 14, 1131. Count Joscelin I of Edessa died the same year, and his son Joscelin II, a poor warrior, succeeded him, preferring to reside at Turbessel rather than Edessa, which he considered too exposed.

Special - Christmas
Lady (Y/N) lets out a soft sigh, sensing a gentle breeze coming through the gap of the slightly opened window shutters. Drowsily, she shifts under a thick furry blanket, only to find her husband's arms protectively wrapped around her round belly. The queen slowly moves his blond locks aside to leave a peck on his frowned forehead, tenderly waking him up.
''Mhm...'' The king's lips form into a smirk as his wife draws closer to caress his cheek. ''Good morning, my dear.'' - he whispers in a hoarse voice and leans above her to kiss her collar bone, but a faint knock on the door forces him to retreat. ''...Come.''
One of the door leaves bursts open to reveal a little prince rushing inside the bedchamber. ''Auntie! Uncle!''
''Baldwin, why did you wake up so early?'' - asks puzzled lady (Y/N) when the boy comes to a halt right before their bed.
''It's Christmas today!'' - exclaims joyfully the child.
Soon after him in the doorway appears breathless princess Sibylla and bows apologizingly at the couple before taking her son's hand to lead him outside. ''Darling, why did you wake your uncle and aunt up?''
''I didn't, mama. They were already awaken.''
The princess shakes her head disapprovingly and about to turn the door knob, she turns to her brother. ''Forgive my son's misbehavior.''
''Don't apologize.'' - interrupts Baldwin, chuckling softly. ''I'd miss the whole day, if not for him.''
''Ah, I almost forgot. All of the guests are already here. Shall we begin the banquet?''
''We can't keep the guests waiting, can we?'' - asks rhetorically Baldwin, reaching out his hand to help lady (Y/N) get up. When the couple is left alone to change their attire, Sibylla promptly heads out to the great hall to check on gathering relatives. To her surprise, everyone has arrived earlier than her, even lady Maria Komnene, and they're still waiting patiently for late hosts.
The discourses of various kind are soon silenced by the arrival of the seneschal, lord Joscelin of Courtenay, who pounds resoundingly on the table. ''Fair madams and sirs, here we gather to celebrate together a long-awaited holiday that is Christmas. However, it's different this year, because His Royal Majesty and his beloved wife will attend the festivity. Let's all now stand up to welcome king Baldwin IV and the queen.'' A round of applause reverberates on the castle's walls, encouraging the royal couple to deftly get on the podium and greet the comers. It's been a long time since a king made an appearance at the Christmas banquet.
''Brother? Sister?'' - asks in a low voice Sibylla when she comes near the two of them. Her blue eyes as well as her ochre robes adorned with golden ornaments are glimmering in the candlelight. ''Merry Christmas.''
''Merry Christmas.'' - replied in unison Baldwin and lady (Y/N), exchanging warm smiles with each other.
The king takes a deep breath in, facing the staring at him audience, but a delicate squeeze of his hand disperses his heavy thoughts. Baldwin peeks at lady (Y/N), who is leaning her head against his arm, and once some whispers about their fondness reach his ears, he clears his throat to begin his speech: ''It's truly a pleasure to see all of you here celebrating together. This sight gladdens my heart, especially when I haven't seen it in years.'' A sudden sniff coming from moved father William of Tyre, wiping his tears with his sleeve, interrupts Baldwin but only for a second. ''May more good occasions like this one bring us together. Merry Christmas everyone, Merry Christmas.''
''Merry Christmas!!!'' - exclaims cheerfully the crowd, brazen goblets are raised for a toast.
''Merry Christmas, my love.'' - purrs Baldwin in lady (Y/N)'s ear and presses his silver mask's lips to her belly. ''And Merry Christmas to you too, little one.''
Merry Christmas! 🎅

Arranged Marriage (Baldwin IV x Y/N)
Part 20
''What is happening?'' - mutters under her breath princess Sibylla, alarmed by the turmoil outside her private chamber, and draws back the curtain in the side entrance to the great hall to gaze about the crowd storming inside the building.
Snorting angrily, lord Guy stands by his frowned wife's side and replies ironically: ''Your dear sister-in-law is conducting a trial against the queen dowager, something you could never accomplish.'' Receiving only a cold glare, he adds in a hiss: ''I warned you, she's perfidious. Now the only obstacle left on her way to power is you, my dear.''
His trenchant words have made Sibylla exhale deeply in her last attempt to remain composed before facing him with an impassive stare. ''And what shall I do about it?''
Lord Guy, as if he's been expecting her reaction, curls his mouth and steps closer to the princess. ''Fortunately, I have a solution for your affliction.''
''Have you already forgotten how your last solution ended?!''
''Trust me, this time it'll be different-''
''No, no, I won't allow you to send another mere dancer to seduce my brother.''
Watching her already heading to the exit, the man in desperation once more attempts to initiate the intrigue. ''But you won't deny that your little gossip about the queen stood us in good stead.''
''Don't you dare!'' The brought up sore subject makes her immediately spin around to silence the provocateur. ''If someone hears about it, both of us will pay the consequences. After all, you entangled me in this ignoble plot.''
''My dear, this is an opportune moment to make a step! Especially when we have such a formidable ally.''
''Who are you referring to?''
''Your beloved cousin.''
''You don't mean...'' Sibylla's surmise is promptly confirmed by her husband's nod before the name of the said ally could even be said out loud. As if numerous concerns that clouded her mind weren't enough a sudden knocking on the front door has sent shivers down her spin and the couple immediately distance themselves from each other. ''Come in!''
In the doorway hesitantly leans out the seneschal and glances quizzically at his niece. ''Your Highness, aren't you coming to the trial?''
''We were, uh, about to leave. But shouldn't you, uncle, be on the way to Byzantium now?''
''I needed to bid my little family a farewell. What a pity I have to leave at the time when my dear wife needs me the most.''
''Do not worry, uncle. I will look after aunt Agnes and your daughters.''
''Thank you.'' A tentative smile forms on his weary visage but doesn't last long as the echo of heavy footsteps distracts his attention from the merry memories of his beloved ones.
''My lord!'' A scrawny knight expeditiously approaches his superior to notify him of the latest news. ''The queen is about to give a verdict!''
''Already?!'' In a rush they all head out to the great hall, now filled to its capacity. Nonetheless, they manage to elbow their way through the raucous mass of nobles to the wooden platform with the king's oaken throne, which to their surprise is currently occupied by the queen.
''How dare she sit on the king's throne?!'' - complains embittered lord Guy.
Lord Joscelin then reminds him calmly: ''In truth, queen (Y/N) was authorized by the king to govern Jerusalem at the time of his absence.''
''Hmph! The king is more naive than I expected.''
Just as the snarky comment has left his mouth, princess Sibylla contradicts him sharply: ''My brother is not ill-advised. He must've chosen her for a reason.''
Her uncle lets out a heavy sigh and chimes with her: ''Indeed. The new queen is a rough diamond that needs a distinguished mentor like Baldwin to catch the light.'' With that said, he squints his pensive eyes at ruminative lady (Y/N), who doesn't avert her frigid gaze from the queen dowager.
Lady Maria, however, doesn't seem to be so unmerry as other participants of the trial - neither her broad grin nor her ridiculing falters with each new accusation brought against her. ''So where will you exile me, Your Majesty? Nablus? Or maybe Byzantium? I believe our granduncle emperor must be yearning for having me in his advisory council.''
''I won't exile you.'' - flatly states lady (Y/N).
''Oh?'' - the amused queen dowager feigns wonderment, twirling her long pearl necklace. ''Is there any atonement I must make? If not, I'll return to my chambers now.''
''You're allowed to leave but not with your daughter.''
In response, lady Maria knits her eyebrows, her cheerful mien is no more evident. ''What do you mean?''
''Your daughter, princess Isabella, will be staying here under the guardianship of lady Stephanie of Milly, the lady of Oultrejordain.''
''What?!''
At once a commotion takes over the audience, yet the queen remains adamant as she turns to one of the courtiers and commands impassively: ''Bring the princess and her belongings to the royal chambers. From now on she lives in the castle.''
''You can't take my daughter away!!'' - shouts wrathfully lady Maria and lunges at her cousin. Fortunately, guards fleetly seize the woman before she could cause any harm. ''(Y/N)! You will pay for it!''
In the heat of the moment lady (Y/N) swiftly makes her way to the rear exit, not aware she's being observed by the king and his former tutor, who deliberates contentedly: ''Now I see why you chose her. She's more than meets the eye.''
''Lady (Y/N) is not a political pawn.'' - cuts in coldly Baldwin. ''She's my wife.'' He then tilts his head toward the sage to add more serenely: ''I chose her, because I love her.'' Once the clicking of heels on the stone floor reaches his ears, the king turns around to greet his beloved with open arms. ''Well done, my dear.''
''Baldwin?'' Their unexpected meeting instantly lifts her spirits. ''Why aren't you at the meeting in the council chamber?''
''I hastened it to see at least the ending of your first supervising the High Court's deliberation. I must say I'm impressed by your brave decision, no one else has brought lady Maria to trial before, but you don't seem to be content with your feat, do you?''
''My dear, I opposed my own family. I'm certain the emperor will harbor a grudge against me because of it.''
Although her disquiet saddens him, he asks placidly with no slight perceptible in his voice: ''Am I not your family?''
''Oh, Baldwin, you mean a world to me. You're more than a family, you're my soulmate.''
''My love, even if the whole mankind turns its back on you, I'll always stand by your side. You chose a righteous verdict and I'm proud of you. Now why don't you take some rest after a challenging day with the High Court?''
''Wait, there's something I need to tell you.''
''What is it?''
Not to disrupt the couple's discussion, William of Tyre discreetly retreats to his scriptorium, but the moment lady (Y/N) is about to utter a word, a group of royal physicians appear in the arched doorway. One of them, the chief physician, hurries to the queen and asks pleadingly: ''Your majesty, may we discuss some matters in private? It's urgent.''
''You may speak in my husband's presence.''
''But it's about your pregnancy...''
At the last word puzzled Baldwin peeps at his speechless spouse. ''I assume that's what you wished to tell me, am I correct?'' He doesn't hear any reply, only spots a deep blush on her cheeks, what causes him to chuckle.
A stilted cough brings everyone's attention back to the middle-aged physician, who begins his explanation haltingly: ''About your examination's results, I found them exceptionally peculiar to be true, so I asked my aides to delve into each detail again. That's when my new apprentice, who I took under my wing a week ago, brought another similar scroll that he admitted to accidentally scramble with other papers. It was your lost examination findings and there was no confirmation of your pregnancy.'' Once the confession is done, he ponderously falls on his knees and one of his subordinates rushes to force his master to stand up but inefficaciously. ''Thus I come here with a plea for clemency on behalf of this youngster. Your majesty, have mercy on him. He's still young and inexperienced.''
Lady (Y/N) in a daze rubs her temples with both her hands, trying to burke her sorrow for the unexpected turn of events. Sensing her husband's arm gently caressing her back, she quickly composes herself, though only for a few minutes. ''Mistakes are part of human nature. All we can do is learn from them, but remember they're meant to make us stronger. Therefore I ask you to continue tutoring him in medicine.''
''I will, your majesty.'' The scholar in relief bows deeply, radiating with exultation.
''I'm grateful that you didn't abandon this young apprentice like many others do when they expect much from their subsidiaries but aren't willing to teach them. You took responsibility for his actions like a true master.''
''I was just fulfilling my obligation.''
''Before you go, I'd like to know if anyone else heard about the pregnancy.''
''No-''
The man's clarification is abruptly interrupted by the youngster's mumbling: ''Uh, actually...''
His master gradually rises to eye intimidatingly the troublemaker. ''Boy, did you tell someone about it?''
''...My older sister. She overheard me reading aloud the results...''
''Your sister? That one, who is countess Agnes's maid?''
Suddenly, a courtier arrives behind their gathering to announce sonorously: ''Your majesty, countess Agnes wishes to invite the queen to dinner.''
My fav Tiberias's edit :)
the only thing missing is a white horse and we'd have a knight on a white horse ✨
Imagine if Kingdom of Heaven got a prequel about the first years of king Baldwin's reign with Tiberias by his side as his regent
A fact: Harry Potter series need to have a prequel ''Marauders''
Should ''Kingdom of Heaven'' (2005) got the prequel?
YES!!
No, because I'm afraid of what the film companies do to the classics nowadays
Actually, the second year of being in the koh fandom🥳 though I'm not so active as before... *cough, cough* Anyway, I shall celebrate it. *Blowing candles on the cake* ''May the fandom last long!''
