"There's something evil in me that loves evil and degradation--purity's black backside! That loves honesty with a horrid love; or why have I always gone seeking it at the liar's door?" — Djuna Barnes (Nightwood)

“By a certain age, we should change names and hide out somewhere, lost to the world, in no danger of seeing friends or enemies again, leading the peaceful life of an overworked malefactor.” - E.M. Cioran, (The Trouble With Being Born)
"Cras, in Latin, means ‘tomorrow’. Crastinus is what belongs to tomorrow. To pro-crastinate, is to place something among the things that belong to tomorrow. To place something there, which implies right away that tomorrow is not that thing’s natural place, that the thing in question does not belong there of right. By implication, it belongs elsewhere! Where? The present, obviously. In order to land in the tomorrow, the thing needs first to be pulled out from the present or barred access to it. ‘To procrastinate’ means not to take things as they come, not to act according to a natural succession of things. Contrary to the impression made common in the modern era, procrastination is not a matter of sloth, indolence, quiescence or lassitude; it is an active stance, an attempt to assume control over the sequence of events and make that sequence different from what it would be were one to stay docile and unresisting, To procrastinate is to manipulate the possibilities of the presence of a thing by putting it off, delaying and postponing its becoming present, keeping it at a distance and deferring its immediacy."-Zygmunt Bauman, (Liquid Modernity)
"The human body is not a thing or substance, given, but a continuous creation. The human body is an energy system which is never a complete structure; never static; is in perpetual inner self-construction and self-destruction; we destroy in order to make it new."-Norman O. Brown
“I dreamed I was alive. That surprised me. I was alive. But I woke myself up.” - Philippe Soupault, (The Silent House)
"Who has not asked himself at some time or other: am I a monster or is this what it means to be a person?"-Clarice Lispector, (The Hour of the Star)
"Adults are just obsolete children and the hell with them."-Theodor Seuss Geisel
"It sometimes seems to me that a pestilence has struck the human race in its most distinctive faculty - that is, the use of words. It is a plague afflicting language, revealing itself as a loss of cognition and immediacy, an automatism that tends to level out all expression into the most generic, anonymous, and abstract formulas, to dilute meaning, to blunt the edge of expressiveness, extinguishing the sparks that shoots out from the collision of words and new circumstances."-
Italo Calvino, (Six Memos for the Next Millenium)
"I did not want to be anything, and naturally I did not want to turn myself into a mere profession: all I ever wanted was to be myself."-
Thomas Bernhard, (Gathering Evidence )
"There are too many motives. We pay heed so easily. We are so pathetically eager for this other life, for the sounds of distant cities and the sea; we long, apparently, to pit ourselves against some trying wind, to follow the fortunes of a ship hard beset, to face up to murder and fornication, and the somber results of anger and love; oh, yes, to face up - in books - when on our own we scarcely breathe."
- William Gass, (The Concept of Character in Fiction)
My dear Sir Art is useless because its aim is simply to create a mood. It is not meant to instruct, or to influence action in any way. It is superbly sterile, and the note of its pleasure is sterility. If the contemplation of a work of art is followed by activity of any kind, the work is either of a very second-rate order, or the spectator has failed to realise the complete artistic impression. A work of art is useless as a flower is useless. A flower blossoms for its own joy. We gain a moment of joy by looking at it. That is all that is to be said about our relations to flowers. Of course man may sell the flower, and so make it useful to him, but this has nothing to do with the flower. It is not part of its essence. It is accidental. It is a misuse. All this is I fear very obscure. But the subject is a long one. Truly yours, Oscar Wilde
