“He likes me well enough, but I don’t think enough to get away with that.  But he’s fine with me drinking my body weight in caffeine so it’d probably be cheaper for him to let me sleep,” he laughed.  “I’m off soon anyways.”

“Yeah, I don’t think many supervisors would be thrilled to have their employees sleeping on the clock, no matter how well they like them. Caffeine should be an adequate stimulant though, right?” She laughed as well. “I’m Ellie, by the way. Have we met?”

“But-” she protested one last time, this time out of playful stubbornness. She nodded in agreement with Ellie’s words to the baby, grinning all the while. “Hey- He gets a baby out of all of this! I think that’s consolation prize enough.” Giggling, she leaned in. “Besides, he gets plenty of good out of my mood swings. I’m a very loving wife, I’ll have you know.”

Ellie gave in to childhood impulses and rolled her eyes before sticking her tongue out. “But nothing, Katherine Chen-Hart.” She had started walking but at Kate’s words stopped abruptly, turning to face her sister with an expression of horror. “Katherine! I’m your sister, I don’t want to hear about how loving you are!” She put her hands over her ears and shook her head firmly, before adding, “I don’t tell you about any of my escapades, do I?”

“I think everyone’s pretty happy here. You’re braver then I am to go sailing. I’m always scared I’m going to blow away.”

“I’m less scared of that than of just being out somewhere where you can’t find the bottom.” Some of the excitement faded from Ellie’s face and she wrinkled her nose. “That’s always really freaked me out, but I’m learning to be more adventurous.”

Drat. He had been so close to ending the conversation, and yet the young woman sought to continue to move things forward. Thick fingers ran along the spines of a few books, a low hum rumbling in his throat as she asked what he was looking for specifically.

“Normally crosswords,” he began, eyes focused on the array of titles on the shelf. “Sometimes I enjoy sudoku as well, but I’m usually more of a letters person.”

“Oh, crosswords are fun too. My English teacher in high school would give us crosswords to do after tests so that we would stay quiet. I really enjoyed that.” Her voice trailed off absently with the memory. “So you must do them often then?”

Weezie: Oh, I got plenty more. What did the lightning bolt say to the other lightning bolt?

Ellie: He says boom but I'm pretty sure he's thinking of thunder, so ?

“Sometimes. I had a few friends who moved who didn’t want to move.” She chuckled softly. “Yeah I live in a real apartment. I could never do a houseboat. I’d get seasick anytime we got a storm.”

“That’s true, I suppose. At least the people who move to Frey, then, seem to be very happy. I hadn’t thought of the storms, but that would be awful. I’ll just stick to a house then, and maybe go sailing this summer.”

“More like I really need the money,” Levi mumbled. “You think I’d get fired if I went and slept in the storage room? Someone at my old job slept in the bathroom-and it was one of those one person bathrooms, he had it locked for three hours before he got fired.”

“Ah, money is a powerful motivator, isn’t it?” She grinned but shook her head. “I feel like that would probably be a poor choice if you want to keep your job. Of course, it depends on what your manager is like, I suppose. Are they a merciful type?”

“Okay, forget coffee, I just need an IV of caffeine at this point.  I’ll even carry the bulky thing around.  Now I understand the zombies we’re getting at work,” Levi complained to the person at the counter, making himself another coffee.  “Who schedules a flight for three am when their brother has to drive them to the airport before work?”

“Wow, really? A three am flight and then you have to come into work? You’re a better person than I am.” Ellie shook her head in admiration; it didn’t matter exactly, as a nanny, but she knew that if she had a regular nine to five job, she’d have called in sick. “You’re definitely in need of a caffeine IV.”

Weezie: Oh, he was close! But not quite there. You call it a drizzly bear, but I think a wet bear is an acceptable answer, too.

Ellie: HAHAHA okay I really like that one. Rafi seemed less than impressed though. I don't think his vocabulary includes drizzly yet. Got anymore? You've become his favorite person with your jokes.

“Not really, no,” he replied, idly chewing on the inside of his cheek, as if to avoid having to add much more. Talking wasn’t his forte to begin with, and adding strangers to the mix certainly never helped. “Just stopped by to pick up some puzzle books.”

Ellie bit her lip and glanced down at her hands; it would probably be the wiser choice just to leave him alone but she was in an oddly talkative mood at the moment. Besides, the mention of puzzle books made her think of Rafi - not that he would be able to do anything that an adult could, but he did like puzzles. “What sort of puzzle books? I have a sudoku book but I finished all the easy and medium ones, and the hard ones are a little too much for me.”

“But you can have it with the mustard too!” she whined playfully. “Ranch dressing sounds good with it too, but I don’t know if that’s me or the baby talking.” Grinning, Kate squeezed Ellie closer for a second longer before pulling away. “You’re probably right. My moods have been off the wall- Andrew never knows what he’s coming home to. Oh, I was just going for my hot chocolate fix. Come with me?”

“If I liked mustard. Clearly baby is affecting your brain. And taste buds!” Wrinkling her nose, Ellie leaned down again and whispered, “Okay, baby, leave your poor mom alone because ranch dressing with pretzels is just a crime against taste buds.” Straightening once more, she nodded. Hot chocolate was a staple for the sisters and always had been. “Poor Andrew. Remind me to send something over for him, as a consolation for all of this. It’s a good thing he loves you.”

“It’s pretty awesome here. I like it a lot. I’m glad I moved.” She smiled at Ellie. “I’m in Harbor Point. It’s close to the shop so I can walk when it’s nice enough.”

“That seems to be the consensus of everyone who moves.” Ellie nodded brightly; she took Rafi to Harbor Point on a pretty regular basis, for exercise and just to explore the town, and he always loved it. “Harbor Point is great! It makes me wish I could live on one of those little houseboats, but I’m not sure I’d like that for very long, actually.”

Ellie: He said you call it a wet bear, so please tell me there's a better answer that you have. He's still cackling though, because he thinks he's the funniest guy.

Ellie: Okay, you did get a little giggle from me at that one.

Ellie: Definitely nerdy but ANYTHING is better than that mitochondria joke. Update: I told Rafi that joke - the cloud one - and he also laughed so clearly it's the epitome of humor.

ELINOR LESLIE WOOD is currently TWENTY-FIVE years old and working as a NANNY. She lives in the NORTH side of Frey, where some folks say she looks like ADELAIDE KANE.

↳ BIOGRAPHY:

Ever since she was a little girl, Ellie Wood believed in the importance of kindness. Maybe it came from losing her mother before she even knew her, or growing up with Kate’s influence, but no matter the cause, Ellie was unfailingly kind her entire life. She could always be counted to help her classmates and friends, often times to her own detriment. Kate was both a cautioning  and a steadying influence, able to counter Ellie’s more reckless ideas and ease her frequent nervousness. The two girls were inseparable as children and that never changed as they grew up. Ellie would tell anyone who asked that Kate was her best friend.

As she grew older, Ellie realized that she had no real plans or ambitions for her future. Everyone she knew had some sort of idea about what to do and Ellie felt like she was just floundering. At her father’s urging, she applied for college with Kate and took a two years associate’s degree program, something that would give her a little college experience and hopefully open her eyes. That never happened. Time passed and she knew only one thing: she didn’t have any clue what to do with her life. Luckily, fate intervened. A college friend mentioned an acquaintance of hers who recently had a baby and needed a nanny for the summer. With her graduation date approaching and other offers lacking, Ellie applied. Much to her surprise, Reina Alvarez and little Rafael were a perfect fit. At the end of the summer, Reina offered Ellie an actual contract and a long-term job, which she gladly accepted.

A public relations specialist, Reina had an office based in Charleston but worked around the country. Ellie’s job required her to stay in Reina’s house and take care of both it and the baby. Ellie slipped into the maternal role with ease and found herself wishing more and more for a family of her own. Her relationships never worked out, however, and five years later as Reina mentioned an interview in Portland, Maine, Ellie had no objection to relocating - especially when she realized that they would live in Frey and she could be near Kate again. Her excitement only grew with the announcement of Kate’s pregnancy.

Now living in Frey, Ellie feels like a new chapter in her life has begun - one that will hopefully bring all her wishes to fruition.
