Quick question for Filipinos on this site:
Are we considered Asian, Pacific Islander, or a combination of both?
I was taking a census, and when I came to that question, I was stuck. Going home, I decided to it up and came across several different opinions. Some say yes, others say no.
I know Philippines was a part of Asia geographically, but I was still stumped. Growing up, I never looked Asian. I have a naturally tanned/darker skin tone and my hair is more wavy/curly. My father, who has similar features, has claimed to feel closer to Pacific Islanders as well, as growing up he was faced with a lot of colorist ideals that the Philippines is infamous for.
Another point is that a lot of the art festivals in my area typically have Pinoy and Pacific Islander artists, rather than Filipinos being in other Asian art festivals and such. Filipino tribal tattoos also have similarities to those of Pacific Islanders.
I don't mean to be culturally insensitive, but as someone who is part of a family where a lot of our culture has been lost and is trying to be replaced with western ideals, I am trying to look for answers. I am genuinely curious as to what we should consider ourselves, and I would really appreciate input.
Asian. Filipinos specifically are Southeast Asian.
The common conception is that Asians are light skinned, straight haired, thin-lipped, and singkit (don't know English word for this, but it is basically the stereotypical East Asian eye shape, usually with monolid). Lots of Filipinos match this. At the same time, lots don't. I have family who has dark skin, thick lips, and curly hair (to the point where it's 4a or 4b). I also have family who are singkit and light-skinned. I myself am golden-brown, though my skin used to be the color of wood. My hair is also slightly wavy. My nose also is pango (also don't know the English word for this), and it's a bit large.
Colorism and eurocentric beauty standards are mainstream here, which is why if you look up many Filipino celebrities they are light-skinned, sharp nose, etc.
There's a lot of ways an Asian can look like, not just East Asians or South Asians. (Not to mention there are a lot of variety within individuals from those places.) I believe the misconception that Asians are light-skinned etc are a beauty standard in itself.
Also the misconception that Asians are either East Asian or South Asian, I think it's very colonialist. Why does a person only want to associate Asians with either the "advanced" cultures or the people that were well-known/extremely exoticized during colonization?
I don't deny that Filipino cultures can have many similarities to Pacific Islander cultures. It's fascinating to learn. But I think to identify as Southeast Asian is to first of all acknowledge the similarity between us and other inhabitants of the region, whether it's the similarity in cultures or problems we faced. Historically we traded with people in Southeast and East Asia (though I believe some Filipinos managed to reach Macronesia and South America?). Our martial arts have similarities too. I think identifying as Pacific Islander is to ignore all of that.
This is my one opinion. I know some Filipinos feel Latino or Pacific Islander. I think at the end of the day however, instead of focusing on division and inclusion, we should focus on learning about our culture and history, not just the ones that mainstream is trying to teach us.
agree with mgahinugotnadila. the history of the philippines as well as its geographic location has greatly muddied a lot of forms of identity (i and others would argue there is no singular filipino identity at all) but the bottom line is that filipinos are southeast asian. there is no one way to look asian, as there is no one way to look filipino.
filipino cultures have similarities to pacific islander cultures because we're part of a larger cultural zone. if you look into other asian countries in the region such as malaysia and indonesia, you'd actually find a lot of cultural and linguistic similarities because of our proximity to each other, like how we have similarities with pacific islander nations.
the problem here i think, is the boxing of what being "asian" is, because there is no singular way to be asian. asia is the largest continent in the world. do not box yourself into often western colonialist notions of what being asian constitutes.
