The fact that there was something else working in her mind didn’t escape him, and for a long moment he watched her, his expression unreadable. Given the conversation, he had to imagine that something in particular was weighing a little more heavily than the rest, and he laid an arm around her waist and turned to guide her towards the door. Was it him, or had they really cleaned up this place in the few weeks he’d stepped away? Was that a new couch? Hm. He’d have to ask later. The idea that he’d missed out on something major came suddenly, and it made him uneasy somewhere deep in his chest. There was something he didn’t know, and this place was by design the thing that he should know everything about.
"Chrome-chan, you’ve made chan—"
"Finally."
♔ ;; { Just in the nick of time, she thought, when the arm around her waist changes a bit and there's a long ponytail of azure draped over his shoulder and hers. Her own illusion was shed like a coat, one moment the face of childish innocence, the next she was taller and her hair was longer and she was more woman than girl.
She politely took a step away, dismissing herself from the closeness his younger self imposed on her. "Prompt as ever, Mukuro-sama," she commended softly, the gentlest of teases tucked into her words beneath honey-sweet innocence.
Chrome bowed at the waist. "I apologize for any confusion due to this exchange you may have experienced in the past." And though she offered the apology freely she didn't hesitate to tack on, "Though I suppose sneaking up on me caused the trouble in the first place." She hadn't noticed his younger self's presence stirring both physically behind her and within her mind until it had been too late to conceal the room under a mask of days past like she had done to herself. } ;; ♡
That pained him a little, his smile giving way to a furrowed brow, although he quickly shrugged it off and turned to close the refrigerator door. It seemed grungier than he last remembered; he’d have to get after Ken and Chikusa for that, or perhaps little Fran with his tendency to leave candy there for days.
"I don’t believe that you’ll be the one to pay the price for that," he hummed finally, giving her a wry smile. "So long as it’s done with trust in me, the things you do at my command, you are not culpable. Stop worrying, then, and come eat."
♔ ;; { If her mask were a little more snugly in place she would have smiled wryly. Oh how times have changed, she thinks, because now it isn't as simple as following commands and being a blameless vessel. With acquired strength and some independence came the responsibility to accept the consequences of her own actions, and she had learned from the best and wasn't about to change from the path she was set on.
She had admired Mukuro -- and still does -- for his ability to be quite ruthless when the mood took him, and she had striven to develop her own brand of indefatigable strength and cunning survival tools.
"Yes, Mukuro-sama.." She agreed dutifully, careful to conceal her musings from him lest he pry. } ;; ♡
That was the point—he trusted her to be able to keep that equilibrium, and he smiled proudly now as she caught on so quickly to what he’d done. Good girl. Fondly he kissed her forehead again. “I’m just checking that it’s all in working order,” he lied transparently.
"Come now, love. Part of independence is familiarity with one’s limits. Unfortunately, the modern age treats teens with far less dignity than times before it; it’s no measure of your ability, that the financial side of self-care is out of your reach. Soon enough it will be well within your grasp and you won’t have sullied your hands with petty theft."
♔ ;; { Another one of those blank looks is aimed in his direction though her stare does change a little to feign like she's listening to his sudden bout of patronizing. She couldn't recall him being this way when she first met him, though he must have been -- after all, it's his ten-years-prior counterpart that stands in front of her now.
It did give her a secret sense of glee deep within her to know that she managed to fool him with the quick illusion wrapped around herself like a shawl, though the same shabby (at least in comparison to Mukuro's expertise and methodology) work wouldn't fool the aged version. The corner of her lips turned upwards a little, just a tiny bit sly.
"Mukuro-sama, I think petty theft is the least of the things sullying my hands," she corrected mildly with a soft, false meekness more like the shyer, younger version of herself he believed himself to be talking to. } ;; ♡
It was cute how she forgot occasionally that he was the one who controlled her organs, and such, that he had been the one to make that little rumble at such a wonderful time. Purring, he leaned in to kiss her cheek. “I know what you’re thinking,” he chuckled. “But it suits no one if you fall into malnutrition, no matter the chances of having to pick up and move again. Trust me to provide, as I’ve always done, won’t you?”
♔ ;; { It didn't take long for her to figure out the truth of the matter with a brief moment of internal reflection. "Mukuro-sama, don't manipulate my insides." She gave him that blank look she reserved for Tsunayoshi, the boys, and Fran when they're making trouble (inadvertently in Tsuna's case, usually), one of her brows arching. He of all people should know how difficult it is to keep equilibrium with outside intrusion.
And though she ducked her head with the second onslaught of heat that lights her cheeks beneath his kiss, her brows furrow in mild consternation. "Mukuro-sama, it doesn't have anything to do with trust; you don't have to provide." Or shouldn't have to, she corrected mentally with teeth worrying her bottom lip. She is strong now, that is her mantra. } ;; ♡
Every hitman reborn villain
Villain: I'm going to stop you from being boss
Tsuna: I don't want to be boss
Villain: I'm going to stop you anyways
Tsuna: welp
*80 EPISODES LATER*
Villain: wow I didn't stop you
Tsuna: I still don't want to be boss
Villain: I'll be your friend now to help you stay boss, in a cold and distant way.
Tsuna: but I don't want to be boss
Food never missed those boys’ notice, but that didn’t mean that they got healthy things, always instead after candy and junk. He supposed he didn’t blame them when they’d spent so long believing they’d never be able to enjoy a splurge.
It was true they had a good case of wanderlust, but people who’d spent a long time in a cage couldn’t be blamed for that, either. He reached up to run a hand through Chrome’s hair, his gentle reminder that he was there. “There’s a new cafe further into town. Tell me about it there.”
♔ ;; { Chrome understood their motives for living the life they do -- like they could be swept up and away at a moment's notice and snacks not necessarily nutritious but chalk-full of carbohydrates to burn off in fights for survival and more convenient to cart around than other foods. She lived like that too, once. Things have been more stable as of late, but she hasn't forgotten either.
Still, it'd be nice to have bread in the cabinet and milk in the fridge at the very least.
The mist flame-wielder gave her savior another glance, one considerably longer than the previous until her gaze fell to their feet instead. "If you'd like, Mukuro-sama." Her stomach chose that moment to rumble embarrassingly loud, and heat automatically flared up in cheeks. Maybe she too has a tendency to forget about eating regularly after growing used to eating sparingly. } ;; ♡
"Oya, oya, I never like coming back to find Chrome-chan looking hungry," he pouted from the doorway, taking in the sight of her in front of a very empty fridge. Had he forgotten to give Chikusa the grocery money while he took a sabbatical at his apartment? No, he didn’t think so. They’d probably spent it on pizza. Of course. “Is Ken stocking chips in his room again?”
♔ ;; { If Mukuro's appearance startled her she gave no indication; she didn't even really give him her full attention, only casting a one-eyed glance over her shoulder. "Must be," she mused softly, attention back on the empty fridge. "Or it just escaped their notice."
"Neither of them are here much these days," she added, just a bit more softly. } ;; ♡
♔ ;; { Looks like she'll have to secure dinner for herself, again; she really ought to tend to stocking the fridge by herself. } ;; ♡
I will fight too.

It was probably written all over his face that Kyoya wasn’t exactly buying whatever Chrome was saying, even if it did make sense. He made a mental note of talking to Rivaille about this later — because he doesn’t need an assistant, or anyone that’d get in way of how he does his job.
Nevertheless, the raven sighed out loud, leaving the book in his hand on top of the desk next to him. Unfortunately, for now, he didn’t have much of a choice. “Alright.” He answered then, still sounding very unwilling to accept the current predicament though. “Get inside and close the door.” The teacher ordered, sending a last glance to the purplenette before turning his attentions back to the blackboard.
Nothing seemed to be missing and he already had sorted out some questions to give out later to his students. In a normal day, this is the time he’d relax on his chair and maybe take a nap — but apparently, not this time. “So. Why Anatomy?” Kyoya asked, rolling the sleeves of his coat up to his elbows. ATs usually choose their class, don’t they?
♔ ;; { With a nod of her head she ducks inside, mentally patting herself on the back for standing tall and asserting herself. The door shuts with a click and she stays with her back against the flat of the door.
She was expecting some instructions or something, not a question, so it takes her a moment to work through a reason. "Um, well...it's something I assist teaching because I had an interest in it." Knowing how to disembowel a man counts, right? Being able to list and execute human pressure points surely should. } ;; ♡
[@mistifications] Some Assistance Required
Rumors regarding his classes — or himself, which sounded more accurate — were completely unknown to the skylark, as much as the fact that he was getting ‘help’.
The morning had only started and the noise of teenagers running outside his classroom was fortunately muffled by the closed doors. The bell hadn’t rang yet, and despite his first class that day starting only in the second period, the blackboard was already full of words and explanations and questions, all written in a neat handwritting. With the Anatomy textbook in his hands, Kyoya was making sure nothing had been forgotten when the knock against his door shifted his attention to his right.
Arching an eyebrow, the first thing the raven did was look Chrome up and down. Not a familiar face; her height and young features could easily make her pass by as another student, if only it wasn’t for her attire. Just then her words registered in his head, and Kyoya narrowed his eyes suspiciously, closing the book in his left hand with a bam!.
"Assistant? I did not request for an assistant. Nor was I told about this."
♔ ;; { She winces automatically at the ostentatious slap of the pages coming together, and draws her shoulders in a little tighter, making herself appear smaller, more vulnerable. "I see..." she sighs softly, and though she looks like she might bolt in the opposite direction at any moment, her eyes are narrowed in determination. "There must have been an error in delivering the message, then." She has to pause and gather her confidence again before concluding, "This is my assigned post."
She bites her lip as she waits for his reaction, though she forces herself to stand at her full height again, refusing to cower. Whether the man knows it or not, he's awfully intimidating without meaning to be -- at least, Chrome reads no intentional hostility in his stance, only befuddlement. Though she speaks the truth presently, she is a skilled weaver of illusions and lies and half-truths, and it's impossible for her to completely discard the immediate reaction of making herself appear weak and insignificant when faced with any form of opposition. } ;; ♡
♔ ;; { Valentine's Day?
No, thank you. } ;; ♡
-{ “Yes,” he held up a pink sock that was clearly not Chrome’s, “again?”
Clearly he shouldn’t have allowed her to do laundry. He should have simply banned her from doing laundry indefinitely.
♔ ;; { Her cheeks flush with color and she has the decency to lower her head demurely.
"Oh. Again? How odd.." } ;; ♡
-{ “Chrome, I need a word with you..~”
♔ ;; { Her single visible eye blinks.
"Just one, Mukuro-sama?"
