This is Harmony and her emotional support cat, Kitty (short for Kitchen Cabinet). They are two aspects of an eldritch entity, who were separated from the greater mass and from each other in order to gain understanding of lower life forms (humans) and to attempt this foreign concept called “teamwork”.
Unsolicited Art Advice
If you’re angsting over getting cheap art materials or good art materials, and you’re at the point where you can’t really tell the difference and have anxiety over spending money.
Start with the cheap stuff, if that’s what it takes for you to use them. Hours of practice with cheap materials will advance you as an artist way more than good materials you can barely bring yourself to use. And if you keep going long enough, you’ll reach a point where you can tell the difference between the different levels of quality, or at least you’ll be able to feel where limits of your current materials. Then you upgrade, knowing that you’re good enough that the quality of your drawing tablet/pencils/paints will open new artistic horizons for you.
It's been a while since I've posted anything here, and I'm trying to get back into doing regular art.
I don't draw digitally much, but I'm still blown away by how much my drawing has improved compared to the last stuff I posted here.
Quarantine Artathon Day 4: Fuck colouring things in, I understand why lineart and colouring are two separate jobs in professional comics
This is Fission aka. Evan Delos Reyes. I’ve struggled with his personality and appearance, and this is the latest version.
- He’s got the power to produce particle radiation, usually from his hands - He’s Particle (Levi Oh)’s best friend, and they’re a kickass superhero duo together - He and Bearcat/Aaliyah absolutely cannot stand each other, and only their shared appreciation of Levi keeps them from murdering the snot out of each other - He has the most intense backstory out of most of the characters. He manifested his powers at a very young age when he watched his parents get murdered by a member of the Hero Authority - He was then raised by HA Assistant Director Cora Vidente, who is mostly known for her eye-contact-dependent mental reprogramming powers. She basically constructed his entire psyche, and the only thing she couldn’t suppress was his early childhood trauma - He and Levi were partnered up for an assignment earlier in their careers, and Levi managed to connect with him through his trauma and break him out of Vidente’s control - Now he’s the Hero Authority’s resident Angry Bastard and loose cannon
Quarantine Artathon Day 3: Fly-boy
Some people get fire powers, or the ability to control the weather with their mind. Walter Batchelor got... fly anatomy. He can fly, he has extremely fast reflexes, and he can taste with his hands and feet (which might help explain why he’s such an angry person).
- Fly-boy started his hero career as a teen sidekick for the Great Insecto, and has never been able to shed the moniker “Fly-boy” even though he’s now in his fifties - When the leader and second-in-command of the York City Contingent both retired five years ago, he was the next most senior hero on the team, but he passed on the leader position in favour of Pyronne (in spite of her inexperience) - He’s the oldest member of the contingent at the moment, the most senior hero by a couple decades, and he’s Pyronne’s second-in-command - Heroes can retire from active service at fifty, but although he regularly claims he’s going to, Fly-boy has yet to make any serious attempt at retirement - His gruff and unapproachable exterior hide a guy with a great many regrets, and he tries to help younger heroes avoid making the mistakes he did
Quarantine Artathon Day 2: White Warrior
This is White Warrior, a member of the York City Contingent. He used to be an agent in the Hero Authority’s covert division, so his files are sealed and not even Pyronne, his boss, knows who he really is.
- His powers are to phase through solid objects without displacing the matter, and he can take objects with him - He doesn’t speak and communicates through sign language (when he’s feeling cooperative) and interpretive miming (when he’s not) - He’s not a good guy, unfortunately, but he’s a great actor and conveys an animated personality without ever speaking - By “not a good guy” I mean “a sociopath who does hero work as an excuse to beat the shit out of people” and “murders people in his off-hours and hides the bodies by phasing them into solid surfaces and leaving them there” - Spoilers but he ends up being a major villain, although nobody figures out that the bad guy who keeps disappearing people is the same dude until later - He’s fun to draw and write (pfft like I actually write) because he’s a brilliant actor and loves what he does
None of his coworkers (Pyronne, Particle, Fission, and Fly-boy) like him very much, and even his covert division boss (Blood Knight) thought he was a creepy bastard.
Quarantine Artathon Day 1: The Torchbearer
I’ve decided to draw a superhero every day I’m in self-isolation, and today I started with Pyronne.
Pyronne Facts: - She has a ph.d in forensic psychology and was a behavioural analyst for the FBI before she developed her powers - She has several invisible disabilities, most notably the long-term effects of her two (2) traumatic brain injuries - She comes from a family of superheroes with fire powers, but her powers didn’t manifest until a traumatic incident in her forties - She leads the York City Contingent of the Hero Authority, even though she’s technically not the most senior on the team - Her costume was originally entirely black, but then she was patrolling at night and got hit by a bus so she made the change to visibility orange - She is the oldest of four siblings - Her real name is (Dr.) Jennifer Griffin
Longer one. Laser Bastard searches for batteries to power the weird old sword she haunts. You see, she's a ghost whose soul is anchored to a laser sword, and she's currently possessing an artificial body. So if she's gotta carry this clunky old weapon around anyway, it might as well work.
A draw the squad.
Just a joke.
Space popsicles. LB stands for Laser Bastard and yes that is her legal name.
YOUNGEST OF THE GREAT BEINGS WHO MANIPULATE OUR WORLD FROM THE BEYOND, not currently the holder of a valid intergalactic pilot's license.
Too Stuck to make my art on my computer right now.
Meet Tam (not shown: the eldritch entity coexisting in her body), Laser Bastard, and Void Answerer. All attempting to navigate the labyrinth that is the SDMV (Space DMV).
More to follow, hopefully.
Protag of yet another story that’s probably gonna go unfinished.
Her “name” is Asi Wen 179, that is, the 179th inmate of the Asi Wen Facility, dedicated to containing members of a shadowy race of shapeshifters called Body-Stealers. Since real Body-Stealers are never seen and haven’t actually been proven real yet, the facility mostly houses supposed mixed-species Body-Stealers like Wen.
She’s escaped somehow, ended up on a station in a different system from the facility with nothing but the clothes she escaped in, a stolen suitcase, and developing psionic abilities.
She gets adopted by a mixed-species smuggling crew who needs another psion to power their interstellar psi-drive, and they figure that she’ll be the cheapest crewmember they can find- if they can get her psionic nature to mature enough to power a psi-drive.
The crew is Human captain Parus, as psi-null as any full Human and unsure what to do with his newly-found paternal instincts; navigator <seh le>, a “real” Shapeshifter of the <dawes ni he> species, from which originate the legends and horror stories of the Body-Stealers; communicator Tlarnet, a member of a non-Coalition species made entirely of gel; and second-in-command and security guy Nameless Dave, a Gnasher warrior in self-imposed exile (he doesn’t have a name and refuses to answer to one, but for simplicity the others call him Nameless Dave).
The crew struggles to pay their bills and make long travels without biting each others’ heads off. <seh le> is terrified of the possibility of having a Body-Stealer on the ship, Parus is trying to maintain his hard-bitten ex-mercenary exterior in spite of his new fatherly feelings towards Wen, and Nameless Dave is really, really tired of sharing a room with <seh le> (who does not technically need to sleep, uses Dave’s face as reference for his own form, and never ever shuts up). Tlarnet has a datafile of translation work from the Communication Bureau and a host of linguistics knowledge to use. She’s pretty content.
This is Chandra Devar, second-in-command of the Andaakai Defenders. She’s actually a paperwork snob with encyclopedic knowledge of the Force rulebooks, but she knows in her soul there’s no point to fighting in magical transforming armour if you don’t get to dress like a magical girl.
A third-generation Force pilot with difficulty navigating social interactions, she prefers bureaucracy to regular social networks because at least the rules are all written down. She’s also a lover of fashion and has a fabulous attention to detail, hence the fancy Geminus armour.
Her attention to detail and memory is good enough that she often uses her Geminus to make more complex weapons and devices. The material a Geminus is made of is fundamentally non-reactive and non-conductive, which nixes the possibility of making a gun out of it, in addition to the fact that such complexity is beyond the sentience of a Geminus and has to come from the pilot themselves. Chandra figures out how to make her Geminus into the mechanisms of a gun anyway, loading it with regular ammunition. She’s also partial to a less-complex compound bow.
Her talent with complexity has its drawbacks though, it takes her much longer to “transform” and create her weapons, because the Geminus’ pseudo-intelligence has its own limits. Still, she’s a valued member of the team (especially to Commander Whals, who does not understand all the paperwork).
This is Commander Katie Whals of the Andaakai Defenders, a team of five people wearing semi-sapient shapechanging armour. Each suit of armour is called a geminus, to distinguish it from regular armour, and the Andaakai Defenders has five gemini- black, red, blue, green, and yellow.
Katie Whals was the green geminus for six years, and she started earlier than most, since the gemini are particular about their matches, and younger fighters tend to have higher compatibility with green gemini.
Then, all four of Katie’s teammates were killed, all in the same battle. Being the most senior geminus fighter available, she stepped up to fill the role of leader, which inherently requires the black geminus. It accepted her, sensing her resolve, and less then 36 hours after the last of her old team was declared dead, she met a contingent of four new fighters ready to take their places. The defenses can’t be left down long, even in times like this.
The force does their best to test compatibility before sending fighters to take up gemini, but their testing isn’t 100% accurate. Only three out of the four new pilots were accepted by their gemini. The fourth turned out to be an asshole, and was replaced by a civilian pilot who joined them in battle without invitation.
Yadda yadda, everyone learns to recover from their trauma and work together, yadda.
I wanted to colour this but could not make it WORK so I’m just posting it like this.
