Kweupe

After the passing of Dafina, Kweupe and Upenzi took on the duties of advisor to King Mkodi. Kweupe’s mother, Tifu, was one of the original lionesses to join the pride and she shares her mother’s loyalty to the old king.

Intelligent and focused, she was a skilled hunter in her youth. In her old age she is primarily a historian of what pride history she recalls, and a teacher to the younger lionesses.

Like Dafina, she is very level-headed and cool in a crisis. She is wary of the new king, Korofi, and though Mkodi’s young son Upendo is naive she would prefer to see him take the throne, or eventually a son of Mahaba.

As for her own family, Kweupe has two daughters. Dohani, a fairly quiet lioness, stayed with her birth pride and has taken her mother’s place in the hunts. She is currently expecting a cub or cubs, fathered by King Korofi. Though Dohani and Kweupe have always gotten along in the past, this has driven a rift between them. Her other daughter, Zuri, however, chose a new pride and Kweupe has heard rumors that she has a daughter.

Though she has a sister, Kilima, and a brother, formerly Changawe but now simply Chang, they have both moved on and she does not hear from them much.

Princess Cheche and Prince Nandu

Welcome to the two newest additions to the pride. Cheche is the first and only cub to be born into the pride since King Korofi began his reign. She is much more adventurous and spontaneous than her mother, Dohani. All of the lionesses have had to be on their toes to keep her out of trouble. Korofi declared her the Sunshine Princess, though not the heir.

Nandu was born to Cherry Blossom, a lioness of another pride who passed nearby and apparently took a liking to the king. Though Nandu has several older half-brothers, and one older brother from his litter, Korofi announced that the arrogant little cub is to be adopted into the pride and raised as his heir, the Prince of the Evening.

Adia

A quiet, timid lioness, Adia did not leave her pride voluntarily. Distraught and starving, she came upon Dafina in her lone wanderings and immediately latched onto her. When the pair came across the young Mkodi, Adia was the slower to trust, but eventually came around and was soon an unshakeable supporter.

She took no mate in her life and had no children, perhaps because of trust issues, perhaps out of a lack of desire. Perhaps both. Though she did not have as strong a presence or influence on the pride as Dafina, she is still missed by her peers.

Dafina

She was, at least as much as Mkodi, what bound the pride together.

Born to a very large pride that was prone to strife, backstabbing, and enmity, Dafina longed for a community. Though never the most intelligent lioness, she was down-to-earth and realized at a young age she would never be able to unify so many opposing lions. With a heavy heart, she left to find or create the community and family she longed for.

She was the first to see the potential in the young Mkodi, not yet even a king. It was their mutual respect and understanding that spawned the Mithali Pride. Though Mkodi was a great listener, he was not boastful and needed an advocate. Dafina spoke to lionesses she thought needed the pride, and convinced them of the mutual benefit.

She had several children through her long life: Katasanda, the twins Busara and Tobwe; and her youngest and last, Hatima.

Katasanda left the pride and has not been heard from since, though her daughter Mbuni left to join her uncle Tobwe’s pride. However Mbuni’s daughter Kahawa (rumored to be Mkodi’s own) remains.

There are rumors surrounding the paternity of Busara and Tobwe as well. Based on their somewhat unusual opposing coloring (Busara being pale with cream markings and golden eyes, and Tobwe fiery with pale markings and white eyes)... well some say they were fathered by the Moon and Sun themselves.

Neither Tobwe nor Hatima have any offspring, but Busara is the mother of Mkodi’s twin offspring Mahaba and Upendo. They are official heirs to the pride, should Korofi fail to father any cubs. The rumors that their grandfather was the moon have given the pair an almost mystical importance within the pride. Unfortunately the two never met their grandmother, who passed away at nearly 16 years old.

Mkodi, the Old King

Mkodi established the pride in his youth, after leaving his birth pride and striking out on his own. He was thin and lanky, but his kindness and candid attitude towards other lions soon began attracting prideless lionesses to him.

It was to them he owed his survival, and the pride he could now call home, so he asked for little in return from them, but they gave them their loyalty of their own volition.

He allowed and even encouraged the young lionesses to mate freely outside of the pride, as he seemed to have little interest in them himself.

His lack of a blood heir resulted in his eventual adoption of the orphaned cub Korofi as his own son and heir.

Though there are rumors, almost certainly true, that the young lionesses Kahawa and Ruka are his daughters, he only officially took a mate near the end of his life. Busara was a daughter of Dafina, the first lioness to join the pride and Mkodi’s closest friend and ally.

Her two cubs by Mkodi, Upendo and Mahaba, were named prince and princess, but Mkodi made it clear that Korofi was still his son as well, and would inherit first. It would be unfair and unwise to allow the young cub Upendo to usurp the title from Korofi, he claimed.

Mkodi sadly did not grow to know his children well before passing the throne to the new King Korofi.

King Mkodi’s rule is remembered as a time of prosperity and freedom in the pride, and the king himself as a good, just, and gentle ruler.
