To most, a smile was a smile. But Peter’s eyes were trained - he could tell that the smile Minnie offered him was sincere, not the ones that he had to wear as he lied through his teeth about being straight. It made him want to run and hug her and be monotonically affectionate with her. It made acting calm all that more of a struggle.
Peter’s eyes brightened with recognition as he easily fell into step next to her. “Right,” he agreed as he spoke the cafe name. “I normally go there too. Mainly because the campus coffee is ridiculously overpriced and subpar, but you’re right - it’s better coffee.” And of course, they would. Of course they’d go to the same coffee places, and the same school… they really were in sync. If Peter had only been able to love her, they’d have been absolutely unstoppable. “Have you tried their machiatos? Amazing.”
Minnie knew that Peter understood her body language, that he understood the difference between a genuine smile and the polite ones that she would have to flash people to prove that she wasn’t dying on the inside. However, she wondered if he had ever seen that side of her, or known her in a time when her mind wasn’t plagued with demons. She wondered whether he noticed her plates being returned at dinner parties completely untouched, or maybe like her parents he’d just ignored it. It was what they had to do to upkeep the fantasy.
It wasn’t as if Minnie and Peter could click their heels three times and fall back into the friendship that they had six years ago, but this was a start. “Plus they sell some of the best cookies I’ve tasted,” the blonde replied with a grin. Not like she’d ever have one, but she’s fantasied about it many a times until her mind brings her back down to reality. She always has to remember to talk about food, even if she doesn’t eat it. “Of course!” Minnie exclaimed as her eyes grew wide with recognition. “I love getting creative with coffee, except for during finals week. Then it’s just straight espresso.” Everything about them was on the same wavelength; she really wished that they could’ve been best friends instead of almost husband and wife. The blonde would’ve been happy to see him walk through the door during her recovery, not like anyone knew about it.
