Summary of Brazil Unit X

Personal Contribution

For this project I feel there has been things I have learnt and will be able to take with me into my professional future. The concept which we came up with I believe was a well rounded concept appropriate to the brief as I feel I have a good amount of input within this, through research into Brazil as a country. As my part of the group I created various visuals and quite a few floor plans to show the various concepts that we had.

Professional Development And Learning Development.

Within this project I think I have learnt quite a lot, more about the professionally of collaborating and also having an experience in quite a professional presentation. I think both have been good experiences for me in the future. Firstly because I don't feel we have the strongest group dynamics, two of the graphics students didn't communicate or get as involved in the team as needed, meaning that we were never settling on ideas as people kept bringing in new ideas. This made it quite hard to come up with a experience that everybody in the group was happy with and that would actually encompass our concept, I feel I have learnt that if you want to create something and people aren't pulling their weight it better just to say, as this I feel may have an impact of the rest of the groups mark. Ling however was in everyday and very communicative, bringing across researched designs and interesting patterns and graphic pieces, these we decided to use within our experience as using one of her patterns as the floor indicators.

When comparing the run through presentation with the final one, I believe I wasn't prepared for this, and when looking at both I realise how much better the second one was just for the fact that we all were more prepared. I doesn't take much to get a presentation professional if everyone is good at speaking with i think many of our group were. However preparation i feel is needed just to grasp the professionalism.

Overall Summary

As an over all project I do believe there were particular part which could have been done better, I know our proposal wasn't as strong as it could have been however I think I would have a new approach when collaborating and the experience of a professional presentation were invaluable. Although as a group we did have some issues with the dynamics I feel that we did work well together and I would happily collaborate with Ling, Lauren and Asha again.

This is our installation in the football museum, I was really impressed with the work which was on view. Everybody had created unique and exciting proposals. The drawing on the banner called The wonders of Brazil was drawn from one of the graphics course. I thought this was a really nice drawing and done in a really interesting way. I also really like the exhibition booklet and signs made by the group Curing the Fruit Hat Syndrome, these had really lovely imagery and the materials used fitted well with the theme.

14th May

Group met to decide the visuals and other material that needed to be on the banner. Several layouts were tried and tested by me and Asha.

15th May

Group tutorial on banner.

Megan, Lauren and Jazz were not present due to illness

Asha and Jack worked from home.

I was left in charge of the banner which was a good task because I wanted to learn how to use the large format printers.

During the tutorial I was told to make a few changers.

The telephone image was to be changed to one of the visuals made by Megan and Lauren. I liked this visual better because it helped create consistency in the visuals on the page compared to using a photo from google. The pattern was to be changed to one of the others I had made. The floorpalns wasn’t needed because the visitors don’t really need to see that and would like to focus on our concept more.The money shot was the black box because it was the most likely one to relate to anticipation. The overall image looked very well - not too cluttered and very consistent with the imagery.

Problems encountered:

Cutting the banner was difficult due to it being larger than the guillotine the sheet creased in many places. Thankfully a tutor handled the cutting for the reprint.

Pixelated images was a problem but thankfully we created a Facebook group. Communication with the interior design team was very good and this helped me get the psd images from their dropbox. This problem was fixed.

Trying to print of semi gloss paper went wrong, it was difficult to get hold of a member of staff so I stuck to using matte paper settings.

This is the banner which Ling had made for the exhibition which was to be held in the football museum instead of Federation house this was a nice surprise. Unfortunately I was ill on the day the banner was made however Ling took charge and created a banner which explained our concept well. I like the banner and how it look however I felt that some of the weaker visuals were used and one was cropped. All in all I felt it showed our concept and graphically looked very good.

Our Final Presentation

I feel for our final presentation that it went well, we had come along way over the weekend from the dress rehearsal presentation and that is the feedback we got from the panel. John O'shea especially liked the poster and advertisement Ling had put together and also thought it was a good way of getting people into the museum. However he said that the weakest part of our presentation was the box room which we agreed with. I feel that throughout the whole group project we unfortunately didn't come up with a solid idea and this is why our final proposal did have some weak parts, though that we came a long way from in a short space of time, and if we had had the time to properly develop the proposal it could have been a very good idea.

Posters I created for the exhibition. I used colours from the swatches I created from secondary posters. The patter I created from existing Brazil tile work in illustrator. The dates for the exhibition are unclear to when it will be held whether it is permanent or temporary for the world cup.

These are the posters which Ling has done for the exhibition, they use inspiration from Brazilian patterns which she did research on.

This is nearly the final presentation for our concept, Ling still has to put a few final pieces on it. The logo she designed for our name Linear Circles and the grey and ticker tape foreground is what she designed for our advertisment.

These are the telephone boxes which have given us inspiration for our experience. They are all unique and different these a uniquely Brazilian thing. Which we decided was a key factor for our proposal to use something which is very unique to Brazil.

This is another visual of the 2nd floor showing where the final part of the experience will be held. This would be on the second floor.

These two visuals Lauren has done of the phone boxes which who hopefully attract people to do our experience. These are how we would build the anticipation. through not knowing what the phone boxes lead to this is creating curiosity and anticipation.

These are the two visuals I created for this proposal. These so the indicators which we would use to pointer people to where they are supposed to go. The ticket machine uses a Brazilian pattern which Ling has done some research into.

Our New Proposal.

This is our final proposal we came up with. We decided to keep the telephone idea as we got positive feedback about that specific idea, though we realised we had to make the experience something that lead through the museum. We decided to use the first 3 floors for the experience and also the outside area. The telephones on the 1st floor and outside will ring randomly for someone to answer. The telephone will be again in the style of the traditional Brazilian telephones. When you answer the telephone they will tell you to make your way up to the first floor and lead you through to a ticket machine, this will stay in keeping with what ling has designed for the tickets. There then will be a telephone next to the ticket machine. This will then ring and tell you to make your way up to the 2nd floor where you will use your ticket to gain access to a room of darkness where you take your seat and wait for a count down. Then as the countdown is over you then will be immersed by Brazilian culture. This will be a collaboration of the information we built on Brazilian football and the atmosphere surrounding that then also some of the carnival atmosphere.

This is our dress rehearsal presentation.

The feedback we got from this presentation wasn't brilliant. They enjoyed the concept however we weren't hitting the mark with building the anticipation, we were told the we had over complicated the idea. This i feel now looking back at the work is true. We should have simplified the idea and used one specific thing to build the anticipation. We were also told to maybe not use the fourth floor. This is meaning that we are going to have to revisit the experience side of the proposal.

This is a video of a QRcode opening a door done in the same way we would suggest to use.

This is a video of a printer we could use to print the tickets. Which would mean we would be able to design our own ticket machines.

These are the visuals and a few presentation sheets we used in the dress rehearsal, the left top is a visual of the corridor which lauren has done, the visual on the right is one i did of the telephone room and then the final visual is one asha did of the street room.

This is the ticket design Ling has created which the ticket interface, this allows you to be able to create a personalised ticket. With the ticket you can enter the room but also take it home. The tickets are inspired by a carnival token and football shirts.

This is the floor plan for this new idea which I drew up the idea is so you go around the rooms clockwise ending finally in the middle room.

Run through of Experience

Firstly you would enter the fourth floor where you would use the ticket machine interface which ling has created, this is where you would get your ticket from to open each door.

Down the corridor you would open the first door leading to another corridor, on the walls on this corridor there would be photos of previous people who had visited the exhibition. In this corridor there will be one door which you can go in and one that you can only go out. You firstly enter the door on the left which would take you to Room 1, winning the pitch, this room would be informative on what happened when Brazil won the world cup pitch, this is where you would have interactive table. Using the ticket you would then enter Room 2 this room would be about all the negative encounter which have come with the world cup. In this room there will be a projection of people protesting and traditional brazilian telephone on the wall where you would listen to peoples personal accounts of this negativity, leading to the 3rd room you would then experience the highs and lows of Brazils football achievements. Room 4 would be similar to what we suggested being a brazil street party this is to start growing excitement. Room 5 would be a contrast to this, called the heartbeat room, where you would have to stay in a dark room listening to a heard beat and a countdown which then leads to the final room, this being a Photo Booth style room where whichever emotion you picked up on you would have your photo taken.
