Spacing

Perspective is a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something. All the observational posts we have been doing throughout the course have to deal with showing the audience a different perspective of your space within each assignment. Throughout this course, we have read multiple books, plays and articles that were about different subjects. Even though each reading had a different subject matter, the concepts that were discovered were universal between all of the readings. There were examples of certain keywords that tied into all the readings and connected each reading to each other. 

This connection gives this course a sense of unity. Unity is the state of being united or joined as a whole. All of the readings, gave us audience a different perspective about our lives in different ways. As an example, the word, "space" is mentioned in Foucault's writing and the meaning of this word can help us examine the other readings. With maps, space is an important key word to keep in mind when learning about maps. With readings like Antigone, there are specific spaces mentioned in the play that play an important role in the story and it is crucial to be able to see this space for more than what we think it is.

For these observational posts, we have to be able to share a different perspective of our space for each assignment. The concept of space is not only important for our in-class work, but for these online posts as well. The whole idea of these posts is to be able to look past the space, and look deeper. We want to be able to peel beneath the surface and see what our space does for us. There is more to see about all these spaces that surround us on a daily basis. We just have to take the time to look closer.

Good Times with Sweet Cottage

The sequence of pictures that were posted did a good job of telling a story of her space. It is obvious that the author’s pictures tell a story of her and her friend getting together to chat and hang out at her space. I like the idea of this post because even though it is a simple idea for this post, it works. These pictures remind me of all the times that I have gotten together with my girlfriends, not only at Sweet Cottage, but at other places here in Chico. The story that this assignment is sharing is something every person should be able to connect with. It reminds me of this holiday that is coming up. Thanksgiving is a holiday to appreciate you life and who is in your life. These pictures make me think of how thankful I am for my friends because without them in my life, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I enjoyed looking at this post and I think the title of the post caught my attention more than anything. I wanted to know what good times were being shared with Sweet Cottage. 

Perfect Moments

I have to agree with the title that these photographs describe exactly what the titles is trying to depict. Chico State’s campus is remarkable and not every student takes the time to stop and appreciate the beauty that surrounds them. It is easy to tell that this person has a little bit of photography background by the creativity in the photos. It is obvious she didn’t just snapshot pictures of her space, but actually planned out the way she wanted her pictures to turn out. I can relate to this because I go through the same process when I take pictures, whether it be an observational post or a picture that I am taking to post on Instagram. 

Storyboard: Chico Bridges Falling Down, Falling Down, Falling Down…

  First off, the title of this post is perfect for the storyboard post. It’s not only creative, but connects perfectly to the story that is being told in the pictures. These pictures tell the story of when the bridge in their space crashed down into the creek not too long ago. This is the kind of opportunity that doesn’t come around too often and the fact that this author was able to capture it for this assignment is rare. It is quite difficult to try and tell a story about a creek. But in this case, the bridge is what makes the story and it ended up fitting perfectly in the assignment.

The video of Kendall Hall,

I decided to read the description of the video before watching it. Yes, I enjoyed watching the video, but the description of the space completes the video. The way the author describes their space within the video captures the image of our campus perfectly. I enjoyed reading about the landscape of Chico State being a determining factor in choosing this school. Right now it is fall, and that is the best time of year to be able to see and capture the beauty of our campus because the colors are phenomenal. Not many observational posts have a lot of depth to them, but this one does. I like the connection of why he chose this campus because this is something not only I can relate to, but every other student here at Chico. Chico is a beautiful small town and being a local, I have learned to appreciate all the beauty it has to offer, but not everyone tends to appreciate this place as much as they should. This video and description does our campus justice and shows what it has to offer us. The only thing that I think should be added to this post, was a title.  A title says everything about a piece of work.

  “All who wander are not lost”

I didn’t think of having music in the background of my video, but after watching this video, I wish I would have. The music that plays along this video gives the audience watching it a sense of connection within the space. It is hard to believe how much free space this person has to be free. I enjoyed watching all the different animals close up in the video, it felt like I was actually there. I also thought that the title of the post connected well with the space of choice. I saw that there were comments in the video about the space, but I think it would have been better to add some more commentary about the video in the description of the post.

  “Roaming in Roses”

This video shows a part of campus that most people rarely stop to enjoy. The title of the video says it all. Throughout the video, the person is literally roaming in roses. All you see the entire video are all the different color of roses that are apart of this space. Right now is one of the perfect times to video the roses, because fall is coming to an end, and once winter is here the roses won’t be as apparent as they are now. The video does kind of seem repetitive because all you see are roses the entire time, but I think the person did the best they could have done with their space.

Roaming in Roses

This is my video of me walking through my chosen space, the George Petersen Rose Garden. Not much noise can be heard in the background throughout the video except the sound of my footsteps. At one point, a man can be seen and heard in the video talking on his cell phone about the Giants baseball team winning the World Series yesterday. Also, the faint sound of birds flying around and chirping in the background can be heard. The main focus of the video was to showcase the roses, and how many different colored and sized roses there are. The rose garden is a perfect place to go if you want to relax for a bit because, as you can tell from the video, at certain times during the day when not many people are out and about, the environment is very calming and can be a stress reliever. On a day like today, when the wind is blowing slightly, the smell of the roses can be detected anywhere you walk in the garden. Narrow rock pathways can be seen in the video too, which allow people to easily walk through the garden and see all of the roses and birds and bees that often frequent the roses.

"All Who Wander Are Not Lost" - Observation post 4. Here is a clip of me walking through my space, the pasture, on my way to get one of the horses before we went riding that day. The video is already nearly two and a half minutes long just walking through a very small part of the pasture, so there is no way I could have walked around the entire thing. I did, however, point towards the other areas as well as pointed out some key features of this space. It is not exactly narrated, but there are captions throughout most of the video.

As I walked through the campus as I usually do, I found myself outside of Kendall Hall. The gentle, sloping curves of the arches and domed roof were hit with the warm fall light hit the bricks in just the right way to make everything seem warmer even though the temperature would have you thinking otherwise. At this moment I noticed how everything had come together in the right moment and time; the cool breeze hitting the skin, while the warm bricks seemed oddly comforting and the hustle and bustle of the campus providing a familiar sound in the background and I was brought back to why I chose Chico. The campus Chico state resides on is one of the more beautiful that I have seen. While there are other flashier campuses, Chico’s is slightly understated while remaining distinct and bold. The alternating building styles from cold metal and glass to the warmer brick and stone gives the campus dynamic and the forest that surrounds us is simply breath taking in fall. It allows you to feel more connected to the campus and the community as a whole. Kendall Hall will always be a beautiful building that no other campus has, and it serves as a catalyst to bring student to come learn for years and years to come.

I Spy With My Little Eye

In order to get the feel of entering my space, I wanted to make it more dramatic by showing the door opening in the beginning of my clip. I thought that would be a good starting point for exposing my space to the audience. As you saw in the video, the first thing you notice when walking into my space is the greeting you receive from my pups. No matter when you walk into this space, you will receive a greeting from them, which will only makes you enjoy the space that much more. I tried to include visuals of the main features of my backyard that I drew on our last assignment. Some of the features I showed images of were the following: Barbeque, Grapevine structure, Pool, Grass Area and Garden. One thing that I wanted to capture that I couldn’t with the picture of my spatial observation, is the space. My backyard is about an acre big and it’s hard to depict how big it is when looking at a photograph of the space. It is much easier to see the spacing in the video. Even though this assignment is leaning more towards what you see, rather than what you hear, you can hear throughout the video the noise of the cars driving by on the freeway. But even with this noise, while watching the video, I still see my place as a good getaway that helps me with relaxation and focus.

Post 3 Response: Mapping

The two posts I decided to re-blog are the following: “A Tour in the Castle” and  “Seeing From Above”.

  “A Tour in the Castle” does a great job showing the audience a different perception of their space. For this assignment, most people only drew a picture of their space and nothing around their space. But with this drawing, it gives me another way to perceive their space. I liked the description that the author gave about the bedroom and how the bed is an important factor to the entire space. I understand that there aren’t usually a lot of details to include in a typical bedroom, but I think the author should have included more items that are located in her space rather than just including the bed.

  “Seeing From Above”, the title, does the picture justice. Titles are important to have for these works because it makes the reader more interested in the work that is being looked at. The more the title catches the reader’s attention, the more interested the reader is in exploring the author’s work. I enjoyed reading the paragraph on the map drawn of the space because the writer knew what important aspects to include and explained why they mattered.

  After looking and reading my classmate’s posts on the mapping assignment, I noticed a couple things that I should have included in my post. Instead of drawing a “floor plan” of my space, I should have used technology such as Google earth to capture a good snapshot of my space from a different perspective. It would have been easier to visualize my examples of how I utilize my space. Another thing I noticed that I didn’t do as well was explain better about why certain features of my space are significant.

Seeing from Above

My map is drawn from the above and is in a south to north direction. The boundaries of my map is from the middle of the grass on the left to the middle of the grass to the right side, with the road on the south to where the plaza hangs off as a cliff over Feather River. In drawn in the trees, mushroom in the grass and the bushes at the edges of the sidewalk. My piece mainly focuses on the circle, where the rocks and fishes are at, wrapped with the garden beds.

A Tour in the Castle

I decided to draw my whole apartment for the post, although my spatial observation is in my room. I thought it would be a good perspective to see it as a whole and to see where it’s actual location is. In the map that I drew you can see the most important room (spatial observation space) is in purple. For the most part all the other rooms are in black. In my space you see that my bed has a crown. The crown signifies the most important item in my room. My bed is where all the magic happens, and my magic I mean sleep. When I go into my domain it is the first spot that I head into and I wouldn’t have it any other way. In drawing my whole Apartment and highlighting my room I realize that my space is a piece of something bigger.

Our Neck of the Woods

My space, as you can see above, is my backyard. My backyard is me and my family's neck of the woods. It is the usual place where my family engages in certain activities. It consists of the typical features backyards have: back porch, grass, and a fence surrounding the space. There are a few features like the pool, garden, bbq and grape vine structure that are not as common, but complete the backyard. This space is about an acre big and the sizing of each feature on the paper doesn't do it justice off the paper. It is easy to feel the vibe of my space from being able to determine what my space consists of. As an example, it is easy to see the family getting together for a bbq and imagining my dad cooking burgers on the grill, while the kids are swimming in the pool and the adults are sitting on the back porch relaxing. With the space being closed off with the fence surrounding it, this space is considered private because only my family and whoever we invite into our space has access to it.

Post 2 Response: "Listening In"

For our  “Listening In” response assignment, I decided to reblog are the following titles: “Wind by the Creek” and “Spacial Observation 2”.

  The author of “By the Creek” does a good job of explaining what this space provides for them. The way they describe how this space makes them feel is as if you are sitting next to them by the creek. It is easy to picture what their space looks like and almost be able to feel what this person is feeling when immersed in the space. I think the author should have explained in better detail about what kind of sounds you hear in the space, rather than focusing on how the space makes you feel. It seems as if they were presenting more about what the space has to offer, when the assignment was more along the lines of only the sounds that can be heard within the space. When the writer does explain the sounds that can be heard, it’s relatable because I walk by the creek everyday in between classes, but I have never sat down and just listened to everything that surrounds it. I think next time I have a break; I am going to sit down this time and take a few minutes to experience this space like the writer did. Reading this passage, made me want to not only read about the space, but experience it for myself.

  “Spacial Observation” on the other hand, focuses only on what the person is hearing. The author does go off on a ramble about what they imagine the birds are talking about; which even though wasn’t relevant, I thought was a good way of threading in some creative thinking into their writing. The way they describe the space they are in, makes it seem I am right there with them. The writing about the space is as detailed as it needs to be. If I am reading this post and it feels like I am in that space at the exact moment I am reading it, the author did a successful job of presenting the kind of environment this space lies in. The only advice I would give to this author would be to pick a unique title next time for the assignment. Titles are a good way to catch the reader’s attention. I almost didn’t read this post because of the title that was selected. Just a prime example, the effect the title has on your whole entire piece of work.

  After reading both posts, even though neither of them posted the audio of their space, it was easy for me to get an idea as to what sounds they heard while in their space. Now looking back at my post, I think I could have done a better job explaining the sounds I heard in a more detailed and creative way than I did. It’s helpful to read and see works of your peers, in order to get feedback for yourself for future posts for the class. It gives you a different insight on the assignment.
