lenastribute:
It had taken next to no time at all for Lena to be back to full strength and health. Being saved by sponsors hadn’t been something that she could have predicted - especially as her whole ‘perfect score’ going into the games was based on her skills and her skills alone. She would have been the last of all the tributes to show any weakness and rarely ever in the history of the Hunger Games had a Career had to rely on the general public.
That was saved for the lesser districts. The weaker tributes.
Lena was so sure that she knew exactly what she was up against - and that winning would be nothing short of easy. But the time she had spent in the Arena had been nothing like she’d imagined. Lena had a lot more to fight for now than just the sweet pleasure of victory.
One of those things, was giving Non and the other Careers that Lena had once allowed to become her temporary allies a taste of her revenge.
Lena was so fueled by her keen senses for violence, that she almost missed Kara’s small admittance spoken out into the silence of the forestry.
Turning around to let her eyes flicker from Kara’s face to the way her body was slumped and defeated, Lena cocked her head to the side. It was perplexing to her - a Career that had killed even before the arena. Who enjoyed the kill.
“You… Seem conflicted. Why?”
Kara was unlike anyone that Lena had really met before. Besides the way her presence alone seemed to effect her so, and bring out something human inside of Lena. Kara was blessed with the sort of kindness that was unimaginable to her. The kindness that led Kara into nursing Lena back to health in the midst of the Games rather than putting her down like a sick dog.
“Would you have preferred getting killed?”
It was all sorts of messed up, that Kara had the tinest thought that Lena might actually be proud of her for killing another person. But instead that wasn’t what had come out of the girl’s mouth, it was questions instead.
“It wasn’t...It wasn’t me or them...It was...” sighing Kara ran her fingers through her hair, absently scuffing her boot against the dirt ground. “C-Carter....It was Carter. He...After you and I separated in the trees, he found me and we...we teamed up. Everything was going so well, I felt...useful and alive again having someone around. We had...Set traps and he...It was all my fault. He didn’t want to separate and split up but I promised him everything would be fine...But I knew...I knew it wouldn’t be...I had a bad feeling before we even separated and...”
Sighing Kara walked over to a nearby tree, sitting on the ground and leaning against it she cradled her head in her hands. “He...He got caught by Four’s tributes...Leslie and Vartox...She wanted my stuff but I didn’t have any...I told her to take me, to just take me but she...She killed him...And it all...happened so fast, she stabbed him and I threw my knife and killed...her.”
Absently wiping at the tears that had started sliding down her cheeks Kara sighed, curling her hands into fists and absently smacking them against her legs. She’d had so many breakdowns from the time after she’d left Carter to when Lena had awoken but she hadn’t had one in front of Lena and she didn’t want to, she didn’t want Lena to see her like this but she couldn’t help it now, the breakdowns, the anger, the self hatred, it had all increased tenfold.
“He needed me to protect him and I got him killed...It was all my fault.”
