getting a note on a super old post
the moment they became friends, rhodey had a horrible feeling that one day, too soon for his liking, he was going to be attending tony’s funeral.
the thing is, the probability for this was supposed to be low. rhodey was older by two years, so even if both of them experienced no accidents, no health scares, no unfortunate coincidences, he was set to be first in line to cross over to the other side. he was a minority, a person of color, whose whole life was seen as less in this country from the day he was born, and he didn’t have the privilege of being shielded from discrimination and racial violence. he also had plans to join the air force. he was going to be a pilot, fly fighter jets, and cruise over enemy territory on a regular basis. by all accounts, rhodey was supposed to die first.
but see, tony was reckless. he never wore proper safety gear in the lab where he had a penchant for making things blow up. he drank too much, drove too fast, slept too little. he didn’t have very many friends, and people hated him and wished him ill, just because he was born a genius, a rich kid – a stark. for all the love he had for the few who cared for him, tony didn’t love himself very much (despite claiming so), and he treated himself poorly. he was self-loathing. he didn’t realize he would be missed if he were gone. he had a death wish. he was going to kill himself one day.
i need to take care of him, rhodey thought. he should outlive me, the little shit.
they grew up, grew apart, closer again, and older. every year, rhodey hoped that tony would stop being so self-destructive and start learning to love himself.
he didn’t.
rhodey kept hoping.
then afghanistan happened. rhodey saw the humvee in front of his explode and his heart dropped to his stomach, and he thought, this is it. no. this can’t be it. he should outlive me, the little shit.
he fought – terrorists, his superiors, his coworkers. he fought all of them because he wasn’t going to let his stupid teenage premonition be right. tony couldn’t die.
tony survived.
then.
stane. palladium poisoning. a chitauri army. fire-breathing supersoldiers. ultron. a parking lot brawl. the decimation. thanos.
he survived all of it.
slowly, rhodey started to believe that he was wrong. despite all the tragedies in his life, tony grew stronger and more resilient. he finally began to treat himself better. he started a family. he became happier. livelier.
good, rhodey thought. he should outlive me, the little shit.
but tony wouldn’t be tony if he didn’t subvert all expectations, especially rhodey’s.
in the end, watching with a profound sense of sadness as a flower wreath drifts across the lake with tony’s first arc reactor placed atop it, rhodey still wished he could have been wrong.
he got more years with tony than he ever expected, but it was still too soon. it was always going to be too soon. he should have outlived me, the little shit.
I am RIGHT with ya on Mjolnir in Endgame. Like it was ok at first but the whole sequence just really bothered me. If the Russo’s never touch the MCU again, I wouldn’t mind a bit.
OH I KNOW!! It was fine when Steve was throwing it to save Thor, it was a nice moment, but that should be it. Like in AoU when Vision used it while Thor was distracting Ultron, it was a fun and cool moment, elegantly done without stealing Thor’s thunder (pun intended). Not that Thor minded I suppose, but as a fan who loves Thor I just find that whole sequence in Endgame really off-putting. I was like, all right, you have your moment, now give it back, it’s Thor’s not yours Steve… give it back… *still going* ….. Give. It. Back…. *Nope* It just overstayed its welcome, they basically have Steve, shield in one hand, Mjolnir on the other a whole of time, even using it and summon the power of thunder, I’m like, that just overstepping your boundary, like you’re using Thor’s power now too?? I guess time-travelled Mjolnir hasn’t got that memo from Ragnarok that the power of thunder comes from Thor himself as he is the God of Thunder, “That hammer was to help you control your power, to focus it. It was never your source of strength” but I suppose whatever was established in Ragnarok means little to nothing for the Russos and the M&M because fan(self)service first right! wbk they are all cap fanboys – which btw reminds me of this article I saw the other day which had me rolled my eyes real hard….
cHoSEn nOT to piCK up bECaUSE iT wOuLD hAvE MAde tHoR fEeL bAD….
how noble!
First of all, unpopular opinion I know, I really dislike the idea of people using Mjolnir as a tool to measure the worthiness of their faves, Odin set the rule for Mjolnir in the first movie when he banished Thor, ‘Whosoever holds of this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ It was like him adding shackles to Thor’s power because Thor was being irresponsible, he needed to learn humility and not to abuse his power. It was basically Odin putting him on time-out, when he had earned it, he would have access to his power again. And it actually echoed really nicely in Ragnarok, that, Mjolnir was never the source of Thor’s power, Thor is the god thunder, he always has the power. That was where the idea of worthiness came from, it was about Thor learning to be worthy of his own power, not about anyone who be worthy to gain his power. The power is within Thor…….fgs!!!
I don’t think many people get that, it’s clear the Russos don’t. Like many people, they take this ‘if he be worthy’ literally and just run with it without acknowledging the context of it, and using that simply as a tool to show and prove how great your faves are, like yeah lifting the hammer is a fun party trick, and few characters being able to lift the Mjolnir is comic cannon, but it’s just downright disrespectful to Thor, to have Steve to summon the power of thunder. And to further this disrespect you insult him with this bs ‘Steve just didn’t want to hurt Thor’s feeling during that party he can always pick it up!’ YIKES? I just want to say, Russos, you killed his brother, you killed his best friend, you killed half of his people, you make him think he’s a complete failure, you use his depression for laughs from audience (even though you can argue it’s not treated as a joke between characters, you can’t deny their intention to use that to get comedic reactions from audience), you didn’t give him much to do, you didn’t progress his character, and then you also have to use Steve to literally steal his thunder during battles. Just say you hate Thor, we all been known.

It was alarming how easily he walked into the compound. No one questioned him, no one checked him, he just opened the gate and entered. Once he would go back, he would have to discuss it as a serious safety protocol negligence. On the other hand, he was Captain America. He was no intruder and was allowed to come in and out as he pleased.
Steve walked the familiar hallways, taking in the atmosphere of home. Sometimes he ended in the middle of busy New York in the Avengers Tower, sometimes in the calm area near the woods where the Avengers compound was located. It was comforting to know that the team stuck together no matter what.

if you can only watch one thing from this whole press tour, then go for the korean fan event. you don’t even have to watch the whole thing, but just skip to the last three minutes. that’s where you get to see who robert downey jr. really is.
he comes back onto the stage to tell all the fans, from the bottom of his heart, how thankful he is for them. he’s really someone who shows gratitude for his fans. he appreciates them and acknowledges that they’re a huge part of the reason he’s where he is today. he’s genuine.
most of the time, we only get to see him when he’s behind the ~tony stark persona~ (more specifically, pre-avengers pre-new york pre-ptsd “you know who i am” cocky tony stark persona). it’s a mask he wears a lot, especially when he’s doing press for marvel. so it’s easy to confuse him for his character, and say they’re the same person. and it’s true, he brings a lot of himself into the character he portrays and the lines get blurred a lot. but don’t forget that it’s a mask all the same.
and that guy who ran back onto the stage in korea to surprise the audience with a heartfelt speech about how incredible the last ten years have been for him all thanks to the fans? that’s robert downey jr.
if i could add on:
a couple of days ago one of his press events in korea was covered on his instagram live, and there was this one girl who was so overwhelmed with tears that she cried the entire press event
Robert was so nice he reached out to her instantly, he handed her his handkerchief to wipe her tears, he made sure she stood next to him during the photo op
on the same day he had this press live stream with fans back in India, where the fans at one of the events recreated his dorky dances from the press tours
Robert honest to god teared up, his cheeks were red from blushing and I don’t think I’ve ever heard an actor thank his fans in a more sincere way
robert downey jr is genuinely the most kindhearted actor ever and he’s so fucking grateful for our support and its sometimes hard to miss when he plays up this cocky persona to sell his movies, but it’s there and it deserves to be acknowledged
He has a genuine attitude of gratitude for where he’s gotten to in life and what he’s survived. And yes, sometimes fans mistake the Tony Stark persona he puts on for Marvel press tours for the “real” RDJ, but it’s not so. The real Bob seems to be much more humble (although Tony is getting that way too!) and whimsical than Tony is. The people who reflexively say playing Tony Stark is not a real stretch for RDJ because the actor is basically “playing himself” don’t have a clue. The Tony Stark character has been a brilliant acting feat of highly believable character development stretched over more than 10 years because RDJ is just THAT GOOD. I can’t think of anything else like it in movie history.

Iron Man 2 missing scene
Famous heart surgeon’s office. X-rays of Tony’s torso are laid out on the desk. Tony toys with his Rolex watch, doesn’t look up once.
HEART SURGEON (poking at the files)
It’s as I said, Mr. Stark: it’s impossible to remove the reactor without damaging your heart beyond repair, the shrapnel is lodged way too close to the left coronal artery. You’d die on the operating table. It’s a damn miracle you survived that first operation, that doctor of yours must have been a true wizard.
TONY STARK
He had very steady hands.
HEART SURGEON
Of course, if you could replace the Palladium with something that doesn’t combust, it’d put an end to your problem. But I’m no engineer.
TONY STARK (resetting the watch)
How long is left?
HEART SURGEON
Three months. Four months, tops. Palladium poisoning is very deadly. There’s some medication I can prescribe you to alleviate the pain if you want.
TONY STARK (with a little hand wave)
Sure, sure. Gimme all the good stuff.
SURGEON (embarassed, but expectant)
Also, it’s a bit…weird to ask, but…would you mind donating your body to our institute after you’re, ehm, gone? Body modifications as heavy as yours are so rare, and it would be such a valuable input to…
TONY STARK (shoots him a long look and nods after a beat, then wanders off, drumming on his arc reactor)
SURGEON (calling after him)
Best of luck Mr. Stark!
Watch ticks and ticks.
Ticking of the watch blends over into heavy metal music. In the limo. Tony lies on the backseat, washes down meds with alcohol, stares at the glass of scotch resting on his belly.
TONY STARK (casually)
Hey, Happy? Which of my car d’you like best?
HAPPY HOGAN (over his shoulder)
That’s a hard one, boss! Eh, well, the R8 is a thing of beauty, but I think I’d pick the Saleen. The noises that car makes! But in silver, orange isn’t really my thing. Why’d you ask, boss?
TONY STARK (removes his watch and puts it in his pocket)
Just curious! Let‘s get us to the airport as fast as we can, ok?
to some random point later in the movie: Saleen S7 in the background, now painted a gleaming silver

Quite frankly this is the only thing I need to know about why Tony Stark is gonna survive Endgame.
If Tony is the King in this game of chess (which he and Thanos both are on opposing sides), then he is literally the only one who can’t die or else the entire game is lost. As it says here, it doesn’t matter what the point score is, how many pieces you have left, nothing. If you lose your King, you lose. Period.
As the Russos have been warning us, this next film will come with incredibly painful sacrifices, because sacrifice is a main component of any chess game. Like, sacrifice isn’t just considered an optional strategy. It’s considered an inevitable action that will be taken. In order to win, chess players have to sacrifice some of their most valuable pieces to checkmate their opponent’s King–or even to protect their own King. Sometimes a heavy offensive to break the opponent’s defense will cost pieces–especially if the opponent has already castled.
… But you can’t lose the King. No matter what.
@seventeenthcircleofhell I definitely see what you mean about the King not doing much, while Tony is a very active presence, but here’s how I think about it:
I see it as Tony Stark–the fleshy, mortal human–is the King. While “Iron Man” was his Queen. Tony without his armor is extremely vulnerable. He’s not a super soldier. He’s not a trained assassin. He’s not a god. Yes, he’s still capable, but he can’t really hold his own without his tech.
Iron Man is what gives Tony his power (at least his physical superhuman prowess). The suit’s primary function is to literally protect Tony no matter the cost (as is the Queen as she’s the piece closest to the King). Like the Queen on the board, the Iron Man suit is very dynamic.
In Infinity War, we see the armor get slowly destroyed, chipped away, revealing the vulnerable King underneath. The armor–The Queen–is sacrificed to protect the King. It’s this piece, the vulnerable King, who Strange sacrifices the Time Stone to protect. Not Iron Man.
Furthermore, Infinity War did something interesting in that only Thanos and Tony are emphasized with regal imagery. Ebony Maw kneels before Thanos, like a subject before his ruler, offering him the Tesseract. On the Q-ship, Tony knights Peter–and knighting is the action of a King.
Both Thanos and Tony recognize in one another incredible will–and also each others’ significance. They’re narrative foils, and positioned as antagonists. If Thanos is the King of one side, then Tony is naturally his opposition on the other.
This is why Thanos only sought to kill Tony. Per the commentary, aside from Loki, Tony is the only character Thanos has any deliberate intention to murder, because he sees Tony as a threat.
Because the goal is to checkmate the opponent’s King.
An addition to this excellent thought line–Tony is explicitly called royalty all the way back in Iron Man 1. Remember, the Ten Rings tell Stane ‘you paid us trinkets to kill a PRINCE’.
Over time, with age and wisdom, a prince eventually becomes a king.
for me at least it's because the lack of tony stark reminded me of how much the spider-man story doesn't need him literally at all? like genuinely i used to love tony but homecoming just made me really annoyed & bitter at how overused he's become (which is more the filmmakers' fault). like obv you don't have to agree but people are allowed to post their opinions lmao
Of course people can have their opinions! I don’t like characters that other people love! It’s just that I don’t make hate posts about them or comment on their appreciation posts.
I also think people are forgetting that Tony/Rob launched the mcu as it is now. And Tony being in Homecoming was a way to tie him into Infinity War I think.
But sure don’t like him. I don’t mind. Just don’t make these hate memes like it breaks my heart to see them. And believe me I’ve tried blocking as much as I can
Tony was in SM:HC solely because they wanted to strongly tie Holland’s upcoming Spidey franchise to the MCU given there’d already been two previous incarnations of the Spider-Man franchise (Raimi’s and TASM), and, whether people like it or not, Tony Stark is kind of the face of the MCU. Like, it’s obvious, want something to scream Marvel Studios? Stick RDJ’s Tony Stark in it.
It is Marketing 101.
Marvel Studios is a smart business. They wanted to guarantee the success of SM:HC to the best of their ability–and they thought Tony was the best Marvel hero to bring into the fold because, like I said, 1) he’s the face of the MCU, 2) he already had a connection to Peter from CA:CW. It was a no-brainer, and 3) he’s popular as fuck. His presence alone sold tickets.
I’ll never understand the “over-exposure” gripes because Tony has been in the same amount of MCU films as Steve Rogers. The same exact number.
Tony: Iron Man (1-3), Avengers, Age of Ultron, CA:CW, SM:HC, A:IW
vs.
Steve: Captain America (1-3), Avengers, Thor: The Dark World, Age of Ultron, SM:HC, A:IW
I guess it’s because Steve’s roles in Thor: The Dark World and SM:HC were definitely cameos as opposed to Tony’s appearance in SM:HC.
… But, I mean, someone once tallied the screen-time Tony had in SM:HC and it was only four minutes. If even that. That’s not a lot at all. People made a mountain out of a literal molehill. I think Happy had more screen-time than Tony.
Tony isn’t going to be in SM:FFH, so I don’t think MCU’s Spider-Man is going to be forever tied to Tony whatsoever. It was done just to get Peter off the ground in this universe. That’s it.
Not to put a damper on anyone’s parade but Sony’s precondition to financing Spider-Man: Homecoming was to basically have the MCU’s most marketable star in it. Tumblr can thirst as much as it wants over Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan but they cannot hold a candle to the kind of box office dough Rdj brings for the studio. It might be a bitter pill to swallow for some but it is, sadly, a reality. To date, Downey’s been the lead in four of the six billion-dollar-plus hits from the MCU, and was considered a major factor that pushed Civil War above a billion as well. (I mean, Kevin Feige almost quit Marvel Studios when Ike Perlmutter tried to axe RDJ’s appearance and replace him with Mark Ruffalo.) Not to mention every single one of RDJ’s solo films in the MCU made more than half a billion dollars each, despite Iron Man and Iron Man 2 coming out before the Avengers franchise was established. And Iron Man 3 being one of only two solo films that hit the billion dollar mark in the box office (the other being Black Panther). So, yeah, people can stay mad about it but any studio worth its weight is always going to put out their most bankable stars forward in these types of rare multi-studio collaborations. For Marvel Studios, it’s currently RDJ.

Steve and the Sokovia Accords
I keep seeing a lot of posts about how Steve was in the wrong in CACW because while Tony had a plan, Steve didn’t offer any alternative to it, he was just like NOPE. The thing is though, something that immediately struck me when I watched the movie was the timing of everything. Ross and Tony bring Steve and the others the Accords THREE DAYS before they are to be signed. Those Accords were not drafted, approved and supported by 117 countries in a week. This was 100% intentional. This is also very, very common in American politics. When politicians want to pass a bill they don’t want people to look at closely, they schedule votes at weird times or when a large # of people are away from the Hill (Capital Hill). So you get these 11th hour bills that are hundreds of pages long that no one has had a chance to read, ask questions about, or negotiate on about changes. These bills are stuffed with completely unrelated stuff that gets passed as well because the whole thing has to be signed off on/approved. It’s called “pork barreling.” Those are the questions Steve tries to bring up to the group. When he’s like ‘what happens when…?’ And Tony brushes aside his concerns like ‘oh, I’m sure we’ll get to make changes later when everything dies down.’ But Steve is like what are we agreeing to NOW though? And practically as soon as they are given the “generous” 3 day warning, Peggy dies. Steve flies off to London and everything goes to hell. What time is there to propose or discuss an alternative plan?? The timing was 100% intentional to make sure the Avengers would be subject to the Accords as written–no matter what was lurking on the bottom of page 440 in fine print. Steve is 100% right to be suspicious. This is one of the dirty tricks of American politics that Steve would be totally aware of. And sure, maybe there’s a chance that everything was above board, reasonable, and so on, but you would NEVER sign a thing like that w/o actually checking/reading it. that would be foolish. I mean, did we forget that Project Insight was authorized and approved by The World Council? I guarantee you that Steve hasn’t. I absolutely believe that Steve would have been willing to talk everything out, negotiate, listen to everyone’s pov, and really consider everything carefully…but there’s no time given to do that. It’s all last minute, non-negotiable, and shady. Steve is a master tactician, natural leader, and a reasonable, thoughtful person who is a Big Picture thinker. It’s weird that people just assume he rejects the Accords because he’s being childish or something. That’s not Steve Rogers at all.
My gut reaction is to agree with this post. I was firmly on Team Cap after the first time I watched this movie. After the third. But then, as I continued to watch and I was working with finding everyone’s motivation in this fucked up fight, there were some things I was forced to consider.
The first is that Tony is clever. He spent years working with the US government. He know how they operate. He knows their tricks and tactics. And he spent a decent amount of time manipulating that game. (How else do you expect he got his best friend as his liaison?) Tony would have seen all of the things OP pointed out above. And the odds are that Tony saw this coming. You con’t make that many connections on the Hill without being able to get some forewarning about something that affects you so drastically. (The way Tony seemed to have already made up his mind before Ross even started talking.)
The second thing I was forced to consider is that Tony is smart. He is constantly running the numbers and playing the odds. (I can’t do the equation if I don’t have all of the variables.) Tony might not be very emotionally intelligent, but he knows how to manipulate a situation to his advantage. (He wanted Rhodey to have a suit so someone could take up the mantle of Iron Man after he died. After the throwdown at his birthday party, Rhodey had a suit.)
The third thing is the SI is a multi-national corporation with an army of lawyers. With a few taps of his phone, Tony could have people who lived and breathed both international law and the current political climate ready to go over the accords with a fine tooth comb and to weigh the probabilities and possibilities of signing vs. not signing, (Now this point is up for debate since there is the question of whether Tony would trust someone enough to help him break this down. But even if he didn’t, Tony became an expert in thermonuclear astrophysics over night. The man is smart enough to put a lot of the pieces together on his own.)
The final thing about Tony, is that he adores Bruce. Tony is the one who went after Ross on SHIELD’s behalf at the end of the Hulk movie. He would never in a million years trust something handed to him by the man who made Bruce a fugitive. (If there’s one thing there’s one thing Tony giving his address to the Mandarin taught us is that he will plant himself firmly in between his friends and and people who have hurt them,)
The conclusion I finally came to is that Tony weighed all the possibilities, and found that they all had the best chance of coming out of this whole mess intact if they compromised on the accords for the moment, It was not the desirable option. It wasn’t because he believed that Ross was doing the right thing. (Although, an argument could be made for a version of the accords that the superheroes helped draft. Accountability can sometimes be a good thing. That was probably his end goal.) Tony was trying his best to keep everyone safe.
Steve, on the other side, has never shown a patience for politics. He’ll work within the system as long as it aligns with his sense of morals, but the moment he has to make a gray area compromise, he nopes out. (Rescuing Bucky from Azzano, razing SHIELD to the ground.) I’m not saying this is a character flaw, in fact, a lot of the time, it’s a good thing, but it is not helpful in a political negotiation.
Politics is all about compromises, give and take, gray areas. Toeing the line because there is no other way to do what needs to be done in our broken system. Tony has made his piece with this. Steve hasn’t.
It sucks that Peggy died in the middle of all this, and Steve never really got a chance to process any of this, but he had a team around him. A team of people he was supposed to be able to trust. He didn’t need more than three minutes to think about the fact that Tony always has a plan (even if it’s a shitty plan, it’s there) ask Tony what the fuck he was doing. It wouldn’t take much more than five minutes for Tony to lay out the bare bones of the plan, to tell Steve about the potential for loss of life if they don’t handle this right. And it would have taken seconds for Steve to be skeptical, to question Tony. For Tony to say trust me. And for Steve to do just that.
But Steve didn’t. He stayed stubborn. He refused to see the accords in anything other than black and white, And these two stubborn men, trying to save their family, managed to tear it apart.
Yup, Tony would NEVER side with Ross…UNLESS he felt it was the only way to save the Avengers and keep them together. You know, for the “something worse” that he knows is coming and that he knows will threaten the entire world and those he loves…which includes his team, the Avengers. Tony PLAYS Ross throughout the movie, especially in the Raft scene, which was total subterfuge by Tony (at great danger to himself, it should be noted) so he can get the information he needs to GET TO STEVE AND HELP HIM. Even AFTER all of Steve’s stubbornness and misreading of Tony’s motivation, at the first real evidence that Bucky is innocent of the Vienna assassinations, Tony FLIES TO THE RAFT TO EXTRACT THE INFO HE NEEDS (honestly, probably a 12-hour flight from wherever he was in the U.S.) and then, in the SUIT alone, flies ANOTHER 12 HOURS or more to get to Steve and Bucky in SIBERIA to help them.
If that doesn’t tell you that Tony’s actual motivation throughout this movie is to HELP HIS FRIENDS and KEEP THEM TOGETHER, I don’t know what will.
Transcript Excerpts from Infinity War DVD Commentary on: Tony Stark
[Thanos’ first scene, where he kills Loki]
JOE: Thanos is violent and cruel. It’s interesting because, as Thanos moves forward in the film from this moment, once he disposes of his armour, he almost becomes a holy warrior. Where he doesn’t spend a lot of energy intentionally trying to murder people, unless they’re in some way a threat to his agenda. But almost no one ends up being a threat to the agenda except for Tony, who I think feels he has this sort of existential connection to Thanos. And we’ll get to that when we get to that scene, but its the one moment (since brutally murdering Loki for disobedience) where he actively is going to murder someone for standing in his way.
[Tony about to call Steve at the Sanctum]
MARKUS: We are about to get to a longstanding character conflict built from Civil War, which is, Tony is about to realise that the one person who could help him is the one person he least wants to talk to. JOE: And he luckily carries around the burner phone. MCFEELY: It is convenient that he keeps it charged. JOE: Fully charged. (laughs) Well to be fair, we did have another scene between Pepper and Tony that illustrated where the phone came from. But it was a reshoot scene that we then opted to revert back to the park scene with, so… MCFEELY: And just to underline between lines here, when he says Steve might be able to help, it’s because Tony knows that Wanda is on the run with Steve. And he knows that Vision has been stepping out and maybe having a relationship with Wanda. And he has been cool with that and probably not called Vision to task for it. So, yeah, Tony knows a lot here. JOE: Yeah, Tony’s too intelligent and has too big of an ego to be a stooge to the government. He will take whatever by-product came out of Civil War and use it to his own advantage and to keep the Avengers alive in a way that he feels like is, the less the compromise, the better for him. So I think he has not been actively pursuing bringing Steve, Nat, Sam, and Wanda to justice. He has, in fact, been turning the other way.
[Peter joining and helping Tony fight against the Black Order]
JOE: The relationship between Peter Parker and Tony Stark is integral to the emotional core of the film. And its one that was set up in Civil War, continued in Homecoming, and is furthered here. And it is a father-son relationship, and one that will ultimately end up being exceedingly painful for Tony. ANTHONY: Circumstances sort of forced them to move forward into a more complex place with one another.
MCFEELY:Tony tries to save him, tries to protect him, and actually he does save him, sends him home. Kid’s too much of a hero for that.
(Rhodey at the Compound)
SOMEONE: Even though Team Cap caused physical damage to Rhodey, he does not hesitate, as a hero, to invite in other heroes who can help defend the planet when aliens invade. JOE: And I think it would be a much different situation if Tony were here. If Tony and Steve had to see each other for the first time, it would be much more complicated. MCFEELY: Which is why we didn’t do it. We tried in a few drafts and it ground things to a halt. JOE: Rhodey is once removed from that conflict. He’s also an extremely heroic character, a military man, and understands that his sacrifice needs to be put aside for the greater good of the universe.
(Tony and Strange on the Q-ship)
MCFEELY: We tried to give every main character a bit of a topic sentence; “Why am I in this movie? Why am I going to the great lengths I’m going to?” […] Tony tells Dr Strange that Thanos has been rolling around in his head and “I gotta do something about it. He’s been the cause of all my anxiety.”
JOE: One of my favourite scenes in the movie is this showdown between these two great actors [RDJ & Cumberbatch]
MCFEELY: Yeah. You’ve been waiting for this sort of confrontation.
MARKUS: If you remember in Avengers, Tony goes to space for a very brief moment, and sees what is, in effect, the looming threat of Thanos. And now he is in space again and its time to face that thing he saw back then.
JOE: And these characters all have very cathartic histories that are clashing with each other. Strange lost the Ancient One and learned a very powerful lesson about protecting the Time Stone and what his mission is as Master of Mystic Arts. Tony saw a vision of all of his friends dead. These are powerful motivators that drive these characters on their missions, and their missions are conflicting with each other.
[Tony and Thanos 1v1 Fight]
JOE: And here comes Tony. So, the journey that Tony’s been on as a genius/scientist, is the evolution of his armour. This is the best it’s ever gonna get for Tony and his nanotech. He goes to the cutting edge of what his mind can deliver and it still is not enough to beat Thanos. And in fact, barely keeps him in the fight. MCFEELY: After his initial remark, there’s not a lot of smart aleck here. [referring to the “You throw another moon at me and I’m gonna lose it” line] MARKUS: You realise this interesting parallel between Thanos and Tony. They’re both aware of something from an early point and constantly having to deal with being smarter. Thanos is a futurist as much as Tony Stark. JOE: Which is why he’s aware of Stark from that original battle in New York as the person who undid the plan. MARKUS: And a little bit of respect from Thanos. JOE: We should also talk about that misdirect - Tony Stark getting impaled here. That also was to make you believe that this could potentially be the end of Tony Stark’s journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, it’s a plot twist. MCFEELY: It really gets a reaction.
[That Scene]
MARKUS: Tony starts the movie talking about the possibility of having a child and effectively loses one at the end. JOE: Peter’s death wasn’t originally drawn out like this. He [RDJ???] kept driving to put more and more emotion into it and just went up to Tom and said, “You don’t wanna go. You’re a child. You’re using your spider strength not to go.” And now this is a colossal loss for Tony. As snarky as his relationship is with Peter Parker, he cares deeply about him. And to have him die in his arms will change him forever.
