Project 4

Project 4; The Artist is Present 

For this project; the artist is present; I chose to use smoking and painting. My idea for this was for the unconscious mind to play a role in the painting, what I did with the cigarette at the end was an impulse decision, which I think turned out pretty cool. I usually never smoke, but for this project I thought it would add a little something. To me most of what I like to draw/paint doesn’t always make sense but sometimes it all comes together. I guess what I am trying to represent is that you can start out messy but in the end figure it out. That it doesn’t always matter where or how you start, as long as the end makes sense. I hope this makes some sense. Does it work?

Project #2 - Loop (with critique)

I chose to do my 10 gifs for this project on the movie Office Space. In this scene, there is a slow motion interaction between the three employees who are installing a virus into their company’s computer system to get revenge for being laid off, as well as a lot of money. It is one of my favorite movies and I thought these gifs spelled out the scene extremely well and are all VERY meme worthy at the same time. Each one of these could be used separately or together in social media. The movie itself is a work of art and it was a lot of fun putting these together for this assignment. My favorite one is the first one… it could be used in so many ways! I just felt this was a great way to tell a story without describing what is happening and the audience members would still get a pretty rough to good idea.

Project 1 For my series I collected photos that had to do with the relationship between technology and people. I added a vintage filter to make the photo look aged. The antique filter makes it seem like a the photo was taken in the past even though the content is related to modern times. This makes it seen like time has past. The message behind my series is based around the fact that technology is a huge part of history. It is also something that humans depend on this day and age.

This is a really cool take on the assignment and it turned out really great. The message is definitely sent in these pictures.

Dude, really like this. The first time I saw it I actually thought it was an ad. I like the filter and how it creates a nice retro effect tying the past and present. Good clash and mesh with the digital age.

Project #1

The collages below are humorous in nature. I think that old cigarette ads are modern day ironic, considering what we know now about cigarettes. The “derp faces” from memes also exemplify the irony in postmodern art. Memes are now used everyday and can be considered postmodern in their meanings. I used the free transform and magic wand tool to create the collages, as they were the best most efficient tools to use for this project.

For this project I wanted to show the differences in Colorado on a single day. Though these were not shot on one day it is common for a summer day in Colorado to possess all of these feelings and changes. I wish it was more abstract but I felt that my creativity with this particular project was not the greatest. However, I did film all of the clips myself and I also found the music, which I think fits nicely with the changing of the weather.

Exercise #3

Exercise 3 was to create a music video by combining the audio and video from two different mp4 files. I chose to combine a clip from Toby Maguire’s 2002 Spider Man, and Beyoncé’s remix of Everybody Mad, originally by O.T. Genasis.

Making this video, I especially liked mixing generes. I also think I timed the two selections well where Peter Parker’s big actions coincided with trumpets or  Beyoncé’s vocals in the song.

Project 3

For this project I decided to use pictures and burn them. The idea behind this was to show that many things could just disappear with little effort, that everything sometimes is an illusion something we create in order to survive. This should be significant because it shows how with a little fire, the paper burns and the ink melts, and then a little water will wash everything away. It is a way of showing that is it possible to have a clean slate and start over, that if you dare you could re-use the paper and print a new picture out, with a towel you can take all the ink off. Things I would do differently, would be to let it burn longer, but I was really afraid that the wind would blow it away, and I didn’t want to cause a fire. I would also light another match so it could burn faster and fit in the time of the video.

Reading: Roselee Goldberg Response

This was actually the last piece I watched or read on performance art and it sums up all the thoughts I have on the subject. What category does it fit into? How is it evaluated? This art is extremely radical, beyond what I see as art “pushing the edge”. It’s a category without a category and an anything goes with any material or no material. It’s art without art but is art all by itself.

 “The Artist is Present” by Marina Abramović moved me deeply. Specifically her 3 month performance piece at MoMA. I would have never imagined that such a simple, wordless moment could impact people so much. I wonder if the people who cried were followers of Marina and were just in awe of her presence or if they were passersby taken in by her gaze and the shared intimacy between them. How could you even explain this piece to anyone? It was powerful beyond explanation. I was thinking, this 3 month piece would have been completely different if she had done it in her 20′s. There was something about her bringing all her life’s experiences and pain with her sitting there vulnerable in that chair day after day.

I have to admit, I didn’t really understand nor could I appreciate her earlier works of slapping, cutting, bleeding and thrashing naked bodies. Regardless of my understanding of these earlier works, she is a bold female voice and I admire her. I love that she uses her body as medium.

I did like her piece of the two naked bodies in the doorway. Here I can see her intention: the awkwardness of brushing up against a strangers body, especially naked and especially causing no reaction. Beautiful. I also liked her reclined male with skeleton laying on top because it made me ponder the frailness and temporary nature of life and beauty.

She is an inspiration to me both as a female in the art world, but also as an older accomplished artist.

Her work is insane. It takes a special person to accomplish something like the things she does; just because I don’t quite connect to it doesn’t mean it’s not “real”. It’s like we are wired to “know” what art is, and what art “isn’t”. I had a lot of trouble with my project 4 with running on that fine line of “what is art” and really had to go beyond my comfort zone into something beyond the ordinary.

Exercise #3-

I had a lot of fun with this exercise and it really got me thinking about the relationship between images and sound. There were several ideas swimming around in my head but when I saw this video, it was perfect!  Next, I had to think about what kind of music would flow well and project a different feeling than the original. This beautiful piece from Fantasia, had more of a shy and subdued feel but I wanted to make it sassy and sexy.  This classic song is by Sarah Vaughan, “Whatever Lola Wants.”  I paired it with the Fantasia clip while splicing and adding a few clips here and there to add to the tempo and fill in boring gaps. I also added a color adjustment.  Enjoy!

I LOVE this! The feel of it makes me think of an intro to a movie that is mysterious and not what you expect it to be. The tempo of the song went really well with the scenes you used from the movie… definitely sassy and sexy. Great job!

Exercise #3- Rise of the Legend X The Clash

There were so many ideas that came to mind but I didn’t take too long on this to focus on Project #3 the most. Simple but kind of made the scene a little less intense and more fun. With the music added it reminded me of a Kill Bill feel, too. I had a couple other more intense options, but again wanted to keep it light hearted! Being a film major I could go on and on making these fun videos, but I know the point of this exercise was to simply show that I could make a video in premiere, edit, and export. I cut the clip somewhat and had to adjust the audio so it fit better for the end of the scene to stop with a break in music.

Of course this is awesome because I love martial arts. The editing seems weird right smack in the middle but the beginning was super fresh.

Exercise # 3:

With this work I have always want to combine both the music video from the song Champion by Carrie Underwood and CrossFit.  The song is about empowerment and strength and that is what I love so much about CrossFit.  I did just use the song from Champion and the video of Highlights from the 2017 CrossFit Games.  Unfortunately the filters were not working however I still loved the process of combining the video and the music to create emotion and tell a story.

Project #3:

After reading the Vanishing and Becoming all I could think about is sunrise and sunset and how things vanish and become present when the sun comes up.  I took more of an abstract approach to this by creating my own video of a practice golf ball to symbolize the sun.  I also added a more abstract color filter to the video to solidify the vanishing and becoming of different shapes on the ball.  Throughout making this video I tried to add more fading in and out of both the music and video to help in transforming the object as well as the other shapes in the ball.  Throughout the different filters and the video different shapes start to vanish and become which is what was inspired by reading Vanishing and Becoming by Sean Cubitt.

Project #4

I absolutely loved this project! It took my out of my artistic comfort zone and allowed be to create a piece of artwork I normally would’ve never created. My thought process behind this piece of art is I wanted to incorporate hard lines and flowing lines. The hard lines, represented by the crushed paper represents the tough times in life. The flowing lines represent the strength that we all have to get through those tough times. I loved this project because it helped me think outside the box and allow for more ideas to flow to create this piece of art. It also reminded me of the performance art reading as well as the video of The Artist is Present and made me aware and to be in the moment while I was creating this piece of art.

For my final video I focused on to waste and to smudge. I wanted to show how long it takes to make something look nice and how easy it is to take it away. I used a filter to allow the viewer to not focus on the background and more so on what I was doing. I feel wasteful at the end of the day sometimes, because makeup is expensive and we just wash it down the drain at the end of the day. I did film this multiple times with different color lips, so it truly was a waste to create. I did enjoy smudging the lipstick across my face as it is something I have never intentionally done so it was a first for me. There is something satisfying about doing it too. I have messed up my makeup many times and wished I could just do this instead of trying to not mess up my other face makeup.

To Scream, To Cry

For my performance artwork I focused on the verbs to scream and to cry. I recorded myself faced against a photo of president Trump behind a tarnished American flag projected on to the wall. I added audio from West Side Story’s America along with audio of immigrant children, who have been separated from their parents at the border, crying. I then Yelled” build that wall” along with a cry of my own, “donde esta el ninos “ English: WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN. I placed several roses in my hair which is often used to portray Mexican heritage in art. I was playing the role of the immigrant mothers and fathers who do not have a voice, who are afraid and desperately wanting to know where their children are. I put the audio of the immigrant children loud because we need to hear them, their voice must be as loud as ours. As the granddaughter of immigrants I feel very passionate about this cause and I hope I can share that passion with you.

Project #4: To Erase

For my final project I wanted to use mirrors as a form of looking into yourself, in a physical manner but also mentally. The idea is that what you see sometimes is not the real you, because others have instilled this idea in your head of what you should be. To hide the mirror and erase what society has brought upon you (like for this video, make up) and see the real you is something everyone should step back and do once in a while. Even for myself making this, putting on the amount of make up I did is not something I am used to, and I couldn’t wait to take it off to be honest. 

So while the basic idea of this video is that your looks don’t define you, it is more so a point to prove that who you are is what you want to be, whatever can make you smile. There have been a few times in my life where I wanted to erase who I was because of something I wasn’t proud of. Luckily, you can usually erase those moments are still be you inside. Kind of like the idea that everyone has skeletons in the closet/no one is perfect. The point of revealing myself in the mirror bare faced is to express that that is the way I’d prefer to be to the world. The story could mean something else to someone different. This type of example has been shown in many ways and I appreciate that because it helps people see it. 

I wanted to erase what was expected of me and show who I really am.

It’s getting crazy that we are now all seeing what each other look like instead of this mask of the internet. This was cool to watch. I like it.
