              seeing as the boy was already in his lap, jo simply shifted his stance a bit, so that he could carry the boy in his arms as he stood and nodded a little at molly. he gave a small glance at august and made a face, “ well it looks like burger king is out for today, but how about i get you some ice cream on the way back to the station and we call it even — of course… only if that’s okay with mom ? ” the two almost in sync turn to look at molly, jo with a small shrug on his features. afterall, it could be a fun stop before heading back to the station. he set the six year old down and took his hand instead, slipping the wallet into his back pocket and shrugging once, “ i would recommend cheap italian but i don’t know… i mean tonys on eighth is a great place ? ” he usually just had his lunch delivered to the station but on the few occasions he went out — italian tended to be his go to. “ up to you molly, i’m here for you two. ”

It was odd, watching Jo with Auggie at moments like this. He didn’t even hesitate as the boy crawled into his lap, he just responded so easily. It made Molly’s stomach twist as they turned to her, an identical expression on both faces. August didn’t take after him much, but it was things like this that made the resemblance clear. She sometimes wondered what would have happened if she’d just told Jo the truth once she’d been visibly pregnant. Instead of making up some bullshit lie about an old college flame, who left once she found out.

Shaking it off, she managed to smile at the two of them. “I think ice cream sounds good.” She nodded, stepping forward to take her son’s other hand. “And I think cheap Italian could be good too. Ready to go?”

joseph chambers had never really been the best with kids, james tended to take the lead on cases involving them for that very reason… but fro some reason, he’d never had that problem with molly’s kid august blake. the boy was fun to be around with, and instead of annoyance, jo often found himself endeared by the boy’s actions. so when he saw molly dragging him around towards his desk, the first thing the man did was flip the pictures on his desk over. no need for the boy to walk in and find a half mutilated female corpse on his desk. nope. “ take him out to lunch ? ” he repeated, a small laugh escaping him as he thought about it.

“ yeah. sounds good. i could use lunch. ” he looks down at august, crossing his arms over his chest, “ where we goin’ man ? ” comes the question as he gets up and starts grabbing his coat and wallet, “ i say lunch first tour later. mostly because as soon as we get back here…   i’m probably going to get back to work. ”

Auggie climbed into Jo’s lap, grinning widely as he bounced up and down. “Jo, can we go to Burger King?” He asked hopefully. “No, bub.” Molly answered. “Burger King isn’t good for us, and there’s so much better food nearby.” Grabbing her son’s coat, she turned to Jo. “He saw it in a movie, and he hasn’t stopped asking.” She said quietly. “Are you ready to go?”

         “ i am like fifty percent sure that if you guys come over to dinner one more time sarah’s going to start calling you mom and them i’m really goin’ to get in trouble molly. ” he muttered a little, picking up sarah as he looked down at august. eyes softening a little as the little boy grabbed his hand and begged him not to have to leave the house. “ come on now… alright i’m sure our mom can wait five more minutes. go back to playin’ xbox or whatever you were doin’. ” he  gave a small laugh, “ y’want some coffee while we wait for ‘im ? ”

Molly laughed, tucking a lock of hair back behind August’s ear. “Five minutes, that’s it. Okay, bud?” He nodded happily, tearing off into the other room. She smiled up at her friend, letting out a sigh. “Sure. I don’t want to overstay our welcome. He loves it here, though.” She smiled fondly at the little girl in Seth’s arms. “How is her mom doing?” She asked carefully.

Molly led August through the building, making sure to steer him out of the way of anything that could be potentially dangerous. Her son was easily distracted, to put it lightly, and she re-assessed her plan as she realized that there was no way Auggie would sit still next to her desk for long enough for her to get any work done. She tapped him lightly on the shoulder to get his attention. “Auggie? Do you want to go visit Jo?”

His eyes lit up, and he nodded eagerly, bouncing up and down with excitement. Taking him by the hand once again, she led him towards Jo’s desk. “Auggie has a day off from school, and my usual babysitter is sick, so I brought him in with me.” She explained. “I thought I could show him around, maybe take him out for lunch. Do you want to help me?”
