Play House
Sound installation by Alex Allmont uses old LEGO to create a machine to generate electronic music - video embedded below:
Play house is an automata that mechanically computes and performs hooky and hypnotic acid house. Like a generative musical loom, a single drive turns a sequence of LEGO gears, levers and latches that mutate riffs and rhythm patterns. These are played out on analogue drums and synthesisers from the halcyon days of 1980’s dance music while the machine gradually shifts the timbre and space of the sound. In the piece the process of creation is laid bare so one can indulge in picking apart the interactions driving the score, seeing sound as it changes in sculpture, exploring our expectations in music, or simply rocking out to some fruity acid.

when i saw and heard chaoscontrolled123's wonderful post about the 600 years old butt song from hell i just knew that i had to bring the piece to life
i present to you, the butt song from hell, with lyrics, so you can even sing along if you want:
butt song from hell
this is the butt song from hell
we sing from our asses while burning in purgatory
the butt song from hell
the butt song from hell
butts
Luke and I were looking at Hieronymus Bosch’s painting The Garden of Earthly Delights and discovered, much to our amusement, music written upon the posterior of one of the many tortured denizens of the rightmost panel of the painting which is intended to represent Hell. I decided to transcribe it into modern notation, assuming the second line of the staff is C, as is common for chants of this era.
so yes this is LITERALLY the 600-years-old butt song from hell
EDIT: I still can’t believe this took off like it did this is crazy??? Just wanted to let people know that there are indeed errors in the transcription and this is indeed not a very good recording (I threw this together in like 30 minutes at 1 in the morning,) but I’m working with the music department at my college to get the transcription more accurate!
in the meantime enjoy this fantastic choral arrangement by wellmanicuredman i’m in love
mix0012 | voice and voicing
The voice is an amazing instrument on its own. For some artists, they wish to adjust it, modulate it, give it space and give it room. This playlist caters to such effects that have made the familiar sound unique. Although, to be honest, I salt the playlist with a few extra songs that I just plain like ;)

mix0010 | what am I for (if not to die)
Death and heartbreak. If you pause to think of what sort of music would express these words, you would expect to hear something sombre and morose. However, this week's playlist features songs that subvert this expectation.

mix0009 | rock swoon
When I was in undergrad, I read Alan Moore’s The Watchmen with The Vines’ Autumn Shade on repeat. I can’t put my finger on why it seemed so appropriate, but it felt just right. It brought me somewhere sad and romantic, to a place that was fit for pining away on something half-remembered. I’ve built this playlist around that feeling.

As a small departure from my regular playlists, this set focuses on songs that carry folk traditions. While some of these songs come to us after several if not tens of generations of oral history, some are relatively new, spurred on by recent political events or by the collision of cultures.

This week I am posting a straight-forward genre mix of country, blues, and folk music. Coming off of last week's heatwave, I've chosen songs that manifest the oppressive heat, the slow moving humidity, and the melancholy of lethargy. Take these tracks with you to the veranda and sip on a sweet lonely lemonade.

mix0005 | songs of betterment
Writing my thesis was difficult. Beyond that, it was the most challenging project I have ever taken on. With a thousand potential avenues opening up at the start of every new sentence and a thousand more questions all begging to be asked in the next, it was, at times, completely overwhelming. It was exhausting. I meandered too long on reading a tangential thread of authors or spent days writing an introduction to a chapter that I would force myself to cut completely. These kinds of antics were common, numerous, and daily. The question soon presented itself "How do I do this better?”. I needed something of a mantra to move me forward and so I constructed this playlist. In a way, it functions as a mental shortcut. Listening to it now, I hear its crashing cymbals, its roll of drums and its voices cresting deep bodies of bass. It sings to my hands, and my hands put fingers to keys.

This is amazing: A mesmerizing Beach Boys vocals inspired by the physics of church bells from Alexander Chen, who wrote code to draw a circle for each note of the song using a mathematical relationship between a the circumference of a circular surface and pitch. A fine addition to these synesthetic visualizations of music.
mix0004 | and yet you will leave
This playlist is a continuation of last week's ode to teenagers. The difference in this mixture of indie rock and electropop is that it celebrates the journey of departure. While these 20 tracks highlight the movement between adolescence to adulthood, it also speaks to the realization that one does not simply _become_ an adult. Instead, we are always becoming adults and that the process continues with a spectrum of awkward successes and careful failures. Hopefully, you can hear all of that in the mix.
A minor note, this mix was crafted to be followed by last week's post, totalling in two hours and ten minutes of awesomeness.

mix0003 | you belong teenager ones
Part of me wanted to make a mix of favourite songs from when I was a teenager. But when I listened to music from that time the old histories well up unforgivingly. It transported me to another time and place, to another sense of self. Instead, I wanted this mix to conjure a different set of emotions, a set that reflects what it means to be in your twenties and thirties looking back. In the place of nostalgia and loss, I've tried to convey the sort of acts of forgiveness, kindness, and comfort one must offer the memories of ourselves as we mature. In other words, to tell that old self that they belong, that they are welcome, and we couldn't have gotten here without them.

mix0002 | mountain burrowing home
This mix of bluegrass, folk, and affiliated indie songs attempts to tap into some of the questions and anxieties we all have about _home_. How close to our origins do we need to be to stay honest to them? How far must we journey to appreciate them for what they are? The singers of this mix are pulled by these two contrasts, revealing themselves through odes to remorse, periphery, death, old love, hidden gods. What remains consistent through each is the constraint of a dual anger, both for leaving and for failing to escape.
