Message I sent to my government reps

Every murderer, every rapist, every criminal, every corrupt politician finds a way to justify their actions. The reason there is still a USA is that some people in power have a conscience. I’m hoping you’re one of them. Get this: - FORCED SEPARATION OF FAMILIES AT BORDERS IS UN-AMERICAN AND INHUMANE - INCARCERATING CHILDREN IN CONCENTRATION CAMPS IS UN-AMERICAN AND INHUMANE - YOUR PARTY’S LEADER - OUR RECKLESS PRESIDENT - CAN STOP THIS UN-AMERICAN AND INHUMANE ACTION IN AN INSTANT This outrage began only when the President issued a Nazi-like edict that has resulted in CONCENTRATION CAMPS FOR CHILDREN. It would end when he retracts it. Blaming it on those who oppose his stupid wall plan is like blaming the victim of an armed mugging if he doesn’t turn over his wallet. Put yourself on the right side of history and demand that the President rescind the order that has created these CONCENTRATION CAMPS FOR CHILDREN.

Egregious efficiency

Why do we even hesitate to question the availability of military assault weapons for the citizenry? These expensive machines have only one purpose: to kill as many human beings as possible in as short a time as possible. No citizen needs this. A handgun or rifle for self defense or recreation is reasonable in certain situations, but nobody needs to mow down dozens of people at once. The NRA, which is nothing more than an industry lobbying group, has infested our Congress with financial inducements to use legislative power to favor the proliferation of the killing machines they offer for sale. And let’s be clear about “for sale”: the NRA, and their clients, the weapons industry, wants you to give them your money so you can easily lay your hands on an ultra-efficient people-killing machine. Bribery like this not only endagers American values, it endangers the lives of all of us, especially, of late, our children, and it needs to be stopped once and for all. Congress, to be on the right side of history, must follow the example of countries that already are on the right side, and have already seen the virtual elimination of the mass murders that have become a common segment of US news. Elected US lawmakers must refuse bribery from this industry sales group, the NRA, and work to ban efficient mass-killing machines.

Young People Power to the rescue!

There aren't enough truancy officers to lock them all up if they all strike at once. Start slowly — at first, a one-day strike. Then announce further strikes, each one demanding a tangible change. Escalae the demands, and strikes, until ARs are confiscated and removed from the population. Target NRA-donees, primary them, run against them, shame them. People Power is the only way to rescue a democracy when its leaders won't.

What Do Democrats Stand For?

The Democratic Party can lead the country in a new direction, but will it?

Millions of Americans who are politically engaged for the first time in their lives are crying out for a bold alternative to bigoted and destructive policies.

But Democrats can’t just be anti-Trump or move to the middle.

To be successful Democrats must address the forces that created Trump: The toxic combination of widening inequality and racism.

The richest one percent now own more than the bottom 90 percent. Corporations and the rich are running our politics.

The resulting economic stresses have made many people vulnerable to Trump’s politics of hate and bigotry.

If Democrats stand for one thing, it must be overcoming this unprecedented economic imbalance and creating a multi-racial, multi-ethnic coalition of the bottom 90 percent, to take back our economy and politics.

This requires, at the least:

1. Public investments in world-class schools and infrastructure for all.

2. Free public universities and first-class technical training for all;

3. Single-payer Medicare-for-All;

4. Higher taxes on the wealthy to pay for this;

5. Using antitrust to break up powerful monopolies on Wall Street, Big Tech, Big Pharma, and Big Agriculture.

6. Getting big money out of our politics.

Together, these steps form an agenda to reclaim our economy and democracy for all. Will Democrats lead the way?

Keep that clown in the Blight House

Of the score of dangerous things the Twitiot in the White House can do, the least obvious may be an attempt to get himself impeached. Even inadvertently. Richard Nixon, not a very bad president, but bad enough to get impeached, once said:

"I could walk into my office and pick up the telephone, and in 25 minutes 70 million people would be dead."

Those numbers might not change much, but the words could be spoken by today's occupant of the White House. Scary enough. But scarier still is that they could be spoken by the NEXT occupant.

Harry Cook, a retired agnostic clergyman whose essays I receive weekly, recently wrote that if the present occupant should get much more whacky…

"That's when the intervention must come. In such a situation, he would have to be told that he may remain in the house only if he concentrates on his golf course business and the like. However, on no account must he be removed. Mike Pence is another kind of crazy. Jesus crazy. We don't need that, either."

Indeed. Better the gaudy clown you can't avoid seeing than the snake in the grass. Among the worst of his traits, Pence's sanctimony is the scariest. Aside from looking like the best offering from Central Casting, Pence's fire-breathing eyes overwhelm his fluffed and buffed countenance. He could well race to his office and speed dial the deaths of at least seventy million people if the voices in his head tell him to. No problem immediately sending that many to their Creator, and the rest later. He would not want to be in the same room/planet with all those unmarried women and their families. And if the innocent perish, so what? If they're good, like him, they'll go to the happy place. If not, nuclear holocaust is just the appetizer.

One might wish for some impeachable catastrophe to visit Pence, but the prospect of Paul Ryan in the wings is small comfort. Maybe not as completely irrational as Pence, but what would it be like living in a country that had degenerated to the point where there is a President Ayn Ryan?

Keep the Twitiot, but keep him plainly in sight while the opposition regroups. We are regrouping, aren't we?
