There was a reunion special in Season 5 where the host brought up the time Abby put Maddies solo up the week Mackenzie had one, and she showed the clip of Christi telling Melissa off for not sticking up for Kenz, and Kenzie said she agreed with Christi. Then maddie called her a crybaby and jojo was sitting between them and jojo looked so uncomfortable :'D the clip is called sibling rivalry. also it bugged me that the other girls tried to say it didnt matter to kenzie, which they did.

yes oh my god, that whole special was so uncomfortable. I felt bad for jojo because maddie and kenzie spent almost the entire episode arguing over her. I don’t know why they didn’t seat jojo somewhere else tbh.

I feel like some of the girls/people on the show saw kenzie as being the ‘baby’, even when she got older, and still treated her as a little kid. so talking over her feelings, calling her a crybaby, etc, would be one thing if you’re dealing with a six year old, but another thing when you’re dealing with like an eleven year old. and obviously maddie was rarely sympathetic towards her sister.

Maybe I’m reading too far into this, but….

I kind of feel like Dancing With The Stars Juniors is lowkey making fun of Honey BooBoo.

The first song she danced to was “Don’t Ya” by the Pussycat Dolls. The only fat kid, dancing to “don’t you wish your girlfriend was hot like me?”. Ok, maybe it was a self-esteem boost. “You can dance to anything. Don’t let haters get to you.” I can see that.

Her next song was “Are you gonna be my girl?”. Alright. Generic fast-paced love song.

Tonight she’s dancing to Beauty and the Beast. Are you telling me that not a SINGLE person who was assigning songs thought “which one’s the beauty and which one’s the beast, am I right?” Not a single person thought “will viewers think that? Are we setting her up for bullying?”.

If they wanted body positivity, why not give her Moana? Jasmine? Emperor’s new groove? Toy Story? Mary Poppins? Finding Nemo? Lion King? Anything else? Why “Don’t Ya” and Beauty and the Beast?

Best part: her song was “Something There”. Not the Tale as old as Time. She was in a full length winter dress.

Having a fat person in your cast doesn’t mean you aren’t still fat shaming.

I think you’re the only one thinking those things. The song was clearly the right choice for her personality. Because she’s overweight she can’t be hot? Why not Beauty and the Beast? In that scene, Belle wore a very similar dress. It’s pretty clear who the beauty and who the beast is. For all we know, they’re dressing her in what she feels the most secure in. I questioned why she had basically the same fringe dress in different colors the first two nights, but she was working that fringe.

What I mean by you’re the only one thinking those things is you’re the only one who is thinking you factor that into the song choice. With Don’t Ya I honestly feel like they probably just tried to pick the songs from those years that would be most recognizable to anyone regardless of the genre of music they typically listen to. Like you said, Don’t Ya could also be empowering. To see an overweight teen strutting across the stage and completely owning every second of it could help to give young girls like her a confidence boost. As far as the dress goes, you can literally look at the scene in the movie on YouTube and see they replicated what Belle had on. They gave both Mackenzie and Alana more mature songs. As far as Mandla, I really haven’t watched Coco to comment on the maturity level. If they had switched Alana with any of the younger kids, the themes would be too immature. The only switch I could imagine working for her age is maybe Moana or Pocahontas. They could have made her Ursula instead of Sophia. Now THAT would be fat shaming. All the themes were more current (besides lilo and stitch) than stuff like Emperor’s New Groove. There was just a live action version of Beauty and the Beast out, a live action Aladdin is in the works as well as a live action Little Mermaid, Moana just came out in the past few years and is still extremely popular, and Coco is also pretty popular and just came out like a year or two ago. Oh and Alana never danced to are you gonna be my girl. That was Kenzie and Sage. I think you are right that they should have taken the negatives into consideration, but I don’t think they had negative intentions when assigning her songs.

So, why not give Alana Mary Poppins? That’s current and mature. She could have pulled off Stepping Time in a shin length circle skirt. What about Lion King? He Lives In You, Hakuna Matata, let her go evil with Be Prepared. Why couldn’t she have been Jasmine? Why did they pick the only movie that handed assholes jokes on a silver platter? Either they knew what they were doing or they seriously didn’t think it through. They should ABSOLUTELY be factoring in how people could twist things when children are involved. Whether they did it intentionally or accidentally, they set her up for “which one’s the Beauty, which one’s the beast?” jokes. Which are all over twitter, now. She gets enough hate and abuse as it is. They should have thought this through.

Also, I already acknowledged that I got the third song wrong. For the life of me, I can’t remember it. I tried googling it, which gave me “are you gonna be my girl”, which was wrong. I also tried asking what the song was that I’m forgetting, but that didn’t get me very far, either.

The third song was Something There. You’re missing her first song, which was Conga. I didn’t say it was right or wrong or that they should or shouldn’t factor it in. I just said I think you’re the only one who thought to because I didn’t think of that when I watched it. I think they definitely should be more cognizant of both the negative and positive things that could be said about her. I’m not disagreeing with you. I’m just saying I don’t think they intended for people to fat shame her when they picked the song. People are gonna fat shame her regardless because people are just cruel, so maybe they decided to just go for it? Again, not saying that’s the correct approach.

I honestly couldn’t imagine a lion king number on her. I think of more Ariana and Artyon’s age for that. I know older kids play those roles on Broadway, but idk I just can’t see it in my mind. Mary Poppins could have been cute. I think that would have been a good character for her as well. As far as Aladdin, just basing it off of the song that Miles did, I think it would have been too pro heavy. A Whole New World could have been great. They probably wouldn’t have put her in the typical two piece and I can imagine viewers making snide remarks about that. Like I said before, people will fat shame her no matter what she’s wearing or what she’s dancing to. I bet you they’d fine evil jokes to crack about any of the movies you listed as alternatives. Fat shamers fat shame. It’s just what they do.

It just blows my mind that no one in DWTS thought that through. I’ve been built like Alana my whole life and that’s the first thing I thought about. It’s a really common joke that they should have known about. That’s why I’m saying whether they did it on purpose or by accident, the sin is the same. I find it really hard to believe that not a single person who was part of the decision making process, anyone on Alana’s team, anyone in costuming or production, not a single one of them thought it? Or thought someone more cruel might say it? That’s a whole lot of people not thinking very much about the feelings of a child who’s already been bullied most of her life. It’s just so hard to believe that no one thought or said anything. Which is why I’m suspicious it was lowkey done on purpose. Maybe not “you know what would be funny? Giving the fat kid Beauty and the Beast!” but if someone brought it up ahead of time and production shrugged it off and kept going, that’s lowkey on purpose. I’d love to believe that all of the people involved just don’t think about these things, but at the same time, that’s the thought process that creates accidentally racist ads and products. Maybe they don’t need fat-shaming experts specifically, but bullying experts when kids are involved would be nice. Bullies are going to bully, but handing them jokes on a silver platter should have been caught by someone.

Also, you brought up jasmine. Jasmine was played by one of the professional dancers. Oddly enough, her outfit wasn’t anywhere close to accurate to the movie. She should gave been fully covered in pauper clothes, but she was in a one piece version of her princess outfit. They’ve shown midriff on the kids, but Jasmine didn’t have any. Or, if she did, the costume was big enough to hide it most of the dance. Not arguing anything here, but to your point early about how Alana’s outfit was true to the scene in the movie, why wasn’t Jasmine’s? Why did jasmine get to be dressed as a princess when she shouldn’t have been? Why NOT put her in the full coverage, but still easily danceable dress? Fat kids old and new think about this stuff constantly.

How do you know Alana’s dress wasn’t easily danceable? She didn’t trip on it and it didn’t seem like it was weighing her down at all. It looks it was made of the same material as liturgical skirts. Very much danceable.

Rylee is skinny, so no one cares if she wears a one piece version of a typically two piece costume. Alana is not skinny, so if she were to wear that people would surely make fat jokes about how a she’s “too big” to wear a two piece. Idk what you mean by she shouldn’t have been dressed like a princess because as far as I remember, Jasmine was a princess. It’s been years since I’ve seen Aladdin and I know not all Disney princesses are actually princesses, so maybe I’m mistaken. Maybe I’m misinterpreting the statement. I think Rylee’s costume still would have looked princess-y with midriff showing just as it did without. Are you asking why not put Rylee in a dress? Because Jasmine didn’t wear a dress. Why put Alana in a dress? Because Belle was wearing a dress. Not all the costumes were accurate, but every other kid 9/10 won’t get body shamed no matter what they have on. I must be misunderstanding the entire statement or it just doesn’t make any sense.
