A Magic Dark As Night
Hearing the familiar voice, Henry shot up and spun to face the new arrival.
"Hey, Ricken! Right on time."
He winced almost imperceptibly, having just realized he had not actually figured out what to start with. Oops. Well, winging it should be okay.
"Okay, lesson time. I’m not much of a teacher but I’ll give it my best shot, haha!
"The thing to keep in mind is that dark isn’t always bad! Us dark mages use hexes for lots of everyday things. I’ve got one that I can use to fix things, though they always fall apart again afterwards.
"So I guess the first thing to do is see if you’re compatible with dark magic. I’ll share some of mine with you."
He held out his hands, palms up.
Ricken was completely oblivious to Henry's lack of planning. He stood quietly, listening intently and obediently to what he had to say.
Share some of his dark magic? Was that even possible? Ricken felt a little uneasy. But he did say dark magic wasn't always bad, right? A bit hesitantly, he reached out and placed his hands on top of Henry's.
He flinched - Henry's hands felt cold, almost inhumanly so. The coldness spread to his own hands and up his wrists. Ricken almost thought he could see a dark aura coming from Henry's palms.
"Does this mean I can use dark magic now?"
A Magic Dark As Night
Henry pushed papers out of the way, clearing a space on the desk. Turning, he grabbed a tome from the top of a pile near the tent flap, and flipped through quickly. He placed it on the desk and continued rummaging.
He had invited Ricken to try dark magic, and he wanted everything they could possibly need to be ready. He straightened and surveyed the tent.
Dark tomes, check. Various pages that had fallen from the tomes, check. Notes on risen arm dissection, check.
Yep. That’s everything.
"Wait! Death altar!"
He whipped around and began digging under his cot, muttering to himself.
"Now would he like curses or explosions better?"
A mix of excitement and nervousness filled Ricken's mind as he headed out that afternoon. Today, he would try using dark magic for the first time. He wanted to become one of the best mages in the world, and in order to do so, he would have to master all different kinds of magic. Henry had accepted Ricken's request to help him learn - and with great enthusiasm, too, which was a bit worrying. He hoped there wouldn't be any casualties from this training session...
When he made it to Henry's tent, Ricken called out to announce his arrival. He was instantly greeted with the smell of death as he went inside. Some kind of severed limb was sitting beside Henry's desk - Ricken tried to ignore it.
"Um, Henry? I'm ready when you are."
I dream of being taller. Maybe a little more muscular…stuff like that.
Sweet baby ricken.
A Recipe for Disaster
Chrom cringed and looked around once more. Gods…
"It’s alright, Ricken," He smiled reassuringly and seemed to regain his usual optimism, "We can just get this cleaned up together." It wasn’t what he had planned to do with the day, having just been sparring, but that was the nature of life, he supposed. Undoing his epaulette and cape combo, he stepped outside to throw it a bit away into the dust and pick up the bucket of water outside the tent usually reserved for fires.
"Hopefully this will be the last of our bad luck today, so we won’t need this for a fire, but I’m not sure where else to start."
Chrom's positive demeanor cheered Ricken up a bit. Honestly, he had expected to get in big trouble for this, but luckily, Chrom was being forgiving. Relieved, he grabbed a towel and began scrubbing off some of the potion splatters.
As he cleaned, he noticed that some had gotten on his belongings. "Oh no, my tomes--" he picked one up and flipped through it. The failed potion had reached the pages and eaten away at them, rendering it unusable. Fortunately it hadn't splashed on his other tomes, but he was still upset to lose a precious weapon. He sighed dishearteningly. "I'm really sorry to bother you like this. I'm sure you have lots of more important things to do."
Swording at Night || Open
Nighttime was the perfect time to tiptoe away from camp and find a quiet clearing in the forest to attack some trees. Cutting up some trees at night wasn’t the first thing Lucina would like to do, but instead of trying to sleep while being consumed by thoughts of the uncertain future, she would make do. Guided by the light of the stars, Lucina unsheathed the Falchion and readied it.
She imagined the trees had shifted into risen, unaware and mindless — then she swung. She formed a fissure in one tree’s bark and split apart another’s. Lucina stepped back, dodging a nonexistent counterattack, then she plunged the Falchion into the heart of a tree.
When she tried to pull it out to strike another tree, she found it was amazingly stuck.
"Oh, no—"
Sharper than ever, the Falchion’s edge never seemed to dull, except for when it didn’t want to come out of the tree. So, she tried to pull, and pull, and pull to no avail. The damned sword just didn’t want to come out. Sweat was beginning to form at her forehead and her arms was beginning to tire from attempting to pull the sword out. No longer was Lucina troubled by the future, but troubled by the Falchion’s current situation instead.
Lucina just wanted a distraction, and getting the Falchion stuck in a tree was a good one, she had to admit. Who cares if she’s in the middle of a forest at night with her only weapon stuck in a tree? She could get it out before anyone could find her, hopefully.
The air was suddenly filled with sound of leaves being crushed under someone’s foot. Lucina jumped into action, trying to cover the Falchion’s placement with her body, hoping that whoever was there couldn’t see the sword sticking out of the tree.
"Who’s there?!" Lucina hadn’t meant to sound so distressed, but she was moderately distressed from early events.
Though it was already many hours past nightfall, Ricken still hadn't gone to sleep. He found a particularly intriguing book about the history of magic that kept him up, reading by the light of a lantern. His concentration was finally broken, however, as he heard footsteps pass by his tent and fade away into the distance. That's odd, he thought. Usually everyone else was asleep at this hour. He would have to investigate. Holding his breath, he carefully peeked out of his tent and saw a shadowy figure disappear into the nearby woods. Could it be an enemy? Curious and a bit concerned, Ricken decided he would follow whoever that was to make sure they weren't a threat. He grabbed his hat and a tome - just in case - and started off into the forest.
It wasn't long before he heard another noise; this time, the sound of something chopping away at a tree. Moments later, the noise stopped. Now even more perplexed, Ricken stepped carefully towards the source of the sound - but not carefully enough, as he accidentally stepped in a pile of crunchy leaves.
"Who's there?!" A familiar voice called out. Ricken stumbled forward and made his way to where Lucina was standing, hovering protectively beside a tree with something stuck in it.
"Oh, hi Lucina!" he said with a friendly wave. "Sorry for startling you! I just heard some weird noises coming from the woods, so I though I'd check it out..." Gazing around, he noticed the sword jutting out of the tree. "Uh, do you need some help over there?"
A Recipe for Disaster
Within about 30 seconds, Chrom had flung open the tent flap in a panic.
"What is it?! Did A fire tome go off again?!" Chrom attempted to catch his breath and scan the room, finding only Ricken covered in some kind of goo and an overflowing pot. Oh, great, just more potion nonsense. Chrom never understood this stuff.
”Ricken…” Chrom’s voice trailed off as he looked wearily at the mess, “I thought we all agreed it was better to wait for Miriel to help you with this… stuff.” He didn’t want to treat Ricken like a kid, he knew it was a soft spot, but Chrom didn’t know anything about this kind of…. bookish stuff. And he had a lot more problems to worry about than Ricken blowing his arms off in a more dangerous mixture.
Ricken's heart dropped to his stomach as he saw who had entered his tent. Chrom was the last person Ricken wanted to see him mess up. This wouldn't be good for building up his reputation... Glancing over at the pot, he pouted, looking ashamed of himself.
"I-I'm sorry," he said, his face red with embarrassment. "I just thought-- if I could make some health potions, I could really help out in the next battle..." He stared down at his feet with a dejected expression. "It won't happen again, I promise."
Open RP || A Recipe for Disaster
It was a quiet afternoon at the camp, and Ricken had some free time to himself. He had recently obtained a new book about potion brewing and was eager to try it out. Book in hand, he hurried off to gather some ingredients for a health potion.
One by one, RIcken dropped the ingredients into a boiling pot. After taking a moment to gaze proudly upon his concoction, he double-checked the recipe. "Wait...was that even the right ingredient?" he mumbled, flipping through the book's pages. "Whatever, it'll probably turn out fine..."
Moments later, the pot began bubbling violently and spilling over the sides of the pot. Panicked, Ricken looked about frantically for something to neutralize the potion with. But before he could act, the potion exploded, splattering the greenish liquid around the room. Smoke billowed out from Ricken's tent, leaving a foul odor in the air. The mage sighed in frustration. Someone was sure to come yell at him for blowing something up and making a mess.
