this is like the weirdest question lmao idk how to frame this, but like? How do you find stuff to write? Like when I write I'm always stuck on what happens in the middle
Like ik how the fic starts, ik how it ends, but everything in between is ??? And idk how to find stuff that aren't boring or cringe lmaooo pls help
Hmm nonnie, you’d actually be surprised by the fact that it’s the beginning I struggle with the most 😭 Most of the time I already know the ending and the middle, but finding an opening that hooks the reader without giving everything away has me grabbing my head. (Which is probably why my synopsis are always so vague haha.)
This is gonna sound really weird, but I don’t really “find” things to write. I kind of just… imagine impossible scenarios and then ask myself, “Okay… now how do these characters get out of this?” 😭 I spend an embarrassing amount of time daydreaming “what if?” scenarios. Honestly, I think “what if?” is the foundation for writing the middle part you’re struggling with. You’re taking characters that already exist and asking, “What if this happened instead?” or “What if they made a different choice?” That’s how you end up exploring new emotional arcs, changing character dynamics, or throwing them into completely different settings. (What if Jace reincarnated into a modern setting and had dreams about his past life as prince Jacaerys…was the foundation of my first fic here, Your Promise)
I also think of stories less as a bunch of cool scenes and more as emotional problems that need emotional solutions. If I know where I want my characters to end up emotionally, I just ask myself what’s stopping them from getting there. Then every scene either creates a new obstacle, makes the existing one worse, or solves a tiny piece of it.
For example, if two characters are eventually going to confess their feelings, I don’t jump straight to the confession. I ask, why can’t they confess yet? Maybe one misunderstands something. Maybe they’re insecure. Maybe they’re terrified of ruining the friendship. Maybe outside circumstances keep pulling them apart. Then I just keep adding consequences until the confession feels inevitable instead of random.
I also borrow a lot from the original source material. Since I mostly write modern AUs, I’ll take a major conflict from the show or book and translate it into a modern setting. For example, with my jealous!Jace fic, I knew some random misunderstanding wouldn’t get under his skin nearly as much as his insecurity about looking different from the rest of his family. The original conflict stayed the same, but the setting and execution became my own.
And honestly… take inspiration from EVERYTHING. Other fanfics, books, movies, mythology, fairy tales, history, just anything. Inspiration isn’t copying; it’s asking yourself, “What do I love about this idea?” and then building something new from it. One of my fics, Pretty Things, was inspired by The Little Mermaid but it had my own unique story telling in the world of HOTD these things don’t exist in canon, so honestly you can come up with random explanations 😂
Also don’t worry too much about things being boring or cringe, I would say that’s part of the writing journey! You learn the do’s and don’ts and that eventually refines your writing! I personally think my stuff is cringy because I, for the life of me, cannot do anything without incorporating humour into things 😭😭
At the end of the day, I think writing the middle is mostly just asking questions. What does this character want? What’s stopping them? What choice do they make because of that? What’s the consequence? Every answer naturally creates the next question, and before you know it… you’ve written a story.
