The fall of the Autobahn

It looks like the above scene was captured after an an earthquake, but it didn’t even take a big natural disaster to destroy this above motor way in east Germany, but bad engineering. 

The Autobahn was built on marsh land and the more it was used, the more fragile the construction has become, until in September 2017, the first lane broke off and now, in February 2018, the other lane broke away.

A sinkhole was created under the lanes, which resulted in the damage. No official analysis of how this could have happened has been done, but it is being speculated that the peat has not been stabilised enough carry the weight of the cars. 

Repair of the street will take years, it is estimated to be finished in 2021, and cost €100 million. The motor way is an important link to the Baltic Sea in the north east of Germany.
