Poem for my Little Sister -- MoonlightAndRavens 03/13/26
The first thing I remember about myself
Is that I loved you.
I am standing at the edge of the driveway
Waiting for you to run to me from the school bus.
I am picking you up and spinning
Until the world swirls away
And the only thing left is us.
We are sitting at the breakfast table
And you are silent.
Like a fog has come between us
And I am waiting for the clouds to part.
I am standing outside your bedroom door
Listening to you cry
It's 3am, and I can no longer enter your room:
We don't know each other anymore.
The house is empty now
You took everything with you.
My breath, my eyes
My mind, my heartbeat.
I am nothing without you.
Now my only family
Goes by the names of Guilt, and Grief.
Guilt pries my eyes open in the morning
Saying “wake up, we have to catch the bus.”
And I go to the kitchen
Pour a bowl of cereal for it
And it laughs in your voice.
In the corner of my mind you're there
Sitting at the breakfast table
But then I turn
And you're gone again.
Grief grabs me by the shoulders
And pulls me down to the floor
And whispers in my own voice,
“The world is empty now.”
I am nothing but a memory
Of you.
You had my heart from the day I met you.
I never told you I loved you–
I always thought you knew.
