Hi Mrs. Moonlightwyvern! I had a question…
Literally HOW do you make the dialogue for Lacesong?? I’m working on a little project that involves Hollow Knight, but I can’t figure out how to write Hollow Knight-y sounding dialogue. I don’t have the eloquence man…
So I wanted to ask someone who was actively making Hollow Knight type dialogue, not to mention that from the snippets I saw, it’s pretty accurate too!
Any tips? Advice? It’d help a lot! Thank you!
Hollow Knight dialogue is most reminiscent of old English. Some phrases have words swapped around (Like in Shakra's dialogue, she says "come to know this kingdom all" which would be a strange phrase in the English we use today), and they also tend to use more complicated words and phrases. I find the dialogue from Hollow Knight to be similar to the dialogue in Lord of the Rings, since they both seem to take after old English. Whether you have or haven't watched those movies, I highly recommend studying the dialogue from both LOTR and Hollow Knight for reference. Some characters like Hornet often speak professionally and more seriously compared to others such as Lace. Each character has their own way of speaking, and some have certain "quirks" in their dialogue (like how Twelfth Architect sometimes says two similar words next to each other connected by a hyphen). This is why it's important to study the dialogue from each character that you're writing to get a better sense as to how they speak.
I also find it helpful to try to imagine what a character's voice might sound like. Reading through a character's dialogue with a unique voice in mind helps me better understand their way of speaking.
Sorry that this a long answer. I just love ranting about stuff like this lol. I hope this helps you in whatever project you have!
