sirius: i have seen empires rise and fall. i have watched kingdoms turn to dust…
remus: sirius, you’re literally 19 years old
sirius: shh, not yet, sweetheart, i’m not done yet
sirius: i have outlived dynasties. but never have i seen anyone more beautiful than you
sirius: talk dirty to me
remus: kitchen floor
remus: living room carpet
remus: basement stairs
sirius never really had a home in the literal sense of it. not at 12 grimmauld place, where every wall knew how to bite, not at hogwarts, no matter how badly he wanted it to be. these homes were always temporary things to him, leaving sirius feeling temporary too. in other people’s spaces, under their roofs, in their borrowed bedrooms.
home was euphemia kissing his forehead as it was the most natural thing in the world. it was fleamont making him tea late at night while pretending not to notice sirius lingering in the kitchen because he didn’t want to be alone yet. it was james loving him so loudly and so easily because there was nothing to earn first, no version of himself he had to become to deserve it.
and then home became remus. remus, half-asleep, reaching for sirius in his sleep without even opening his eyes. because remus’s body already knew where he wanted to be, right beside sirius. because, somewhere along the way, they had become each other’s homes too
wolfstar, your honor
certified marauders incident i fear
remus lupin ⏾⋆.˚
when remus travels alone by train, he always pretends to be asleep.
not because he’s ashamed of how he looks, but because if people are going to stare at his scars, they might as well do it properly instead of throwing those quick, guilty glances before looking away again. so let them look.
it wasn’t always like this. once, he used to hide behind books, jackets pulled too high, like he could make himself disappear. but sirius taught him how to survive being seen. not how to love the scars himself, that never really happened, but how to stop treating them like something monstrous. sirius loved them enough for the both of them anyway. his fingertips traced over ruined skin, he pressed his lips against each mark, brushed the tip of his nose along them as if there was nothing ugly there at all.
as if remus himself had never been something to hide and always deserved to be looked at gently
remus, bored at work or trapped on a phone call, absentmindedly drawing sirius’s tattoos from memory on the backs of receipts, notebook margins, scraps of paper
he also tests new pens with writing sirius’s name
both remus and sirius don’t know how to say “i love you” to each other, even long after realising they’re both hopelessly gone for one another, long before dating, even.
so instead it becomes: “i care about you, you know that?” “missed you a little extra today” “i think i’m falling for you” “text me when you get home” “eat something proper, please”
and the first actual “i love you” doesn’t happen during their first kiss, or the first night they spend together.
it happens the next morning. all grey daylight, rain tapping steadily against the windowsill, everything damp and sleepy and soft around the edges. because that’s when the real intimacy hits them. not sex, not longing, not years of pining, but being accepted completely. being cared for gently. being cherished without having to ask for it. this is the overwhelming realisation that the other one isn’t leaving. that they’re both already reaching for more.
and that’s when sirius finally says “i love you”
and remus hums softly, still half-asleep against him “yeah,” he murmurs. “i know. I love you too”
average tuesday for the lupin-black household:
7:30 am - survive whatever sirius attempted to make for breakfast 10:00 am - flirt so aggressively it becomes a disciplinary issue 11:00 am - explain to first years that no, professor lupin is not divorcing dr black because they are not married (yet) 11:30 am - 4:00 pm - reluctantly do actual work 4:30 pm - get banned from yet another bookshop café for snogging in the history section 6:00 pm - hear sirius’s motorbike from three postcodes away and instantly develop a migraine (cured the second remus wraps his arms around sirius's waist from behind) 6:00-7:30 pm - spend £47 in a vintage shop entirely on jumpers and old records 8:00 pm - weaponise pet names during arguments while james and lily place bets on how long the row’s going to last 1:00 am - fall asleep after a spectacularly heated reconciliation, tangled together in each other’s arms and still unable to work out who loves the other more
Remus and Sirius have weekly 'tea sharing time' where Sirius will recount drama and gossip about people Remus doesn't even know, while Remus brews them both a new blend of tea he got in his weekly tea subscription box.
remus reading poetry to sirius out loud
remus lupin is a pretty crier.
that's it. that's the post.
then maybe there’s sirius, who cries terribly. all blotchy cheeks, twisted-up face and wet eyelashes, like he’s offended by the entire concept of crying while doing it
the most quietly devastating difference between james and peter vs sirius and remus was food
james and pete could casually skip breakfast, forget lunch entirely. leave half their toast on the plate and wander off like it would simply still exist later. rich only-child behaviour from james, and peter somehow surviving entirely on vibes and crisps.
meanwhile sirius and remus reacted to food like victorian street children seeing an orange for the first time.
remus always noticed when someone didn’t finish eating. always quietly asking “you’re not gonna eat that?” before they’d even put the fork down. had entire emergency treacle fudge, chocolate frogs and cauldron cakes stashes hidden in his trunk because full moons made him constantly hungry in a way nobody else really understood.
and sirius, who grew up in a house where meals could be taken away as punishment, treated every meal in the great hall like it wasn’t guaranteed. he ate carefully, never too much, never too fast, but always every last crumb. looked genuinely stressed if people skipped meals. absolutely incapable of hearing “i’m not hungry” without acting like the world was ending.
they never spoke about it on purpose. just instinctively started setting food aside for each other.
sirius sliding extra potatoes onto remus’s plate before full moons without a word. remus smuggling toast wrapped in napkins out of breakfast because sirius got detention and missed dinner again.
james once said “you two act like the hogwarts kitchens are entering a famine”
and remus and sirius just looked at him like he’d said the stupidest thing imaginable before immediately diving for the last chip on james’s plate at the exact same time, already laughing before either of them had even won.
My two greatest fears about potentially posting fanfiction:
Someone will read it
No one will read it
That’s so me it’s embarrassing
