In the jungle, the mighty jungle!
Herp derp! One of my favourite features about roughies is their unique (dorky) forward facing eyes.
Perfect little snowflakes on a perfect little tail.
What’re you lookin’ at?
I've been thinking of transforming a parrot cage (5' tall by 3' square) into an arboreal cage for a Carpet Python. In your reptile and husbandry knowledge, is there a huge nope I'm not seeing with this idea?
I’m not too keen on carpet care tbh. It’s sounds like it could be doable though providing you maintain humidity and temps easily. Not sure what you had in mind for modifying it.
@moresnakes
Hey there! I am really ‘ehh possible..but no’ on this idea. Though it does depend on the sub species of carpet python that you are intending to keep, the structure of the parrot cage and the naturally occurring environmental variables in your home. On the whole, its likely a bad idea. Working on the assumption you plan to have this enclosure inside rather than outside... Lets run through some contributing factors that are going to make this a needlessly difficult, costly and all around ‘why would you do this?’ idea.
Temperatures: Keeping snakes temperatures stable can be a pain in the ass. My regions ambient temps vary by 90 degrees from day to night. Now whilst everyone’s temperatures aren’t going to fluctuate that much, unless you are lucky enough to live close to the equator, regulating temperatures in an open air enclosure is just going to be hellish. Humans generally tend to be comfy with an ambient between 70-75 degrees. Your carpet python on the other hand likes an ambient of 80-85. Now if you are happy to wear the expense of keeping the entire room heated all year round to toasty temperatures plus a basking spot all stable, power to you, I wish I had that kind of funding. But generally it is easier to heat a smaller enclosed space and keep it nice and stable then mess around with fluctuating environmental temps. Plus keeping your basking spot up will be... challenging.
Humidity: I hate humidity. My pythons love it. Humans as a whole tend to keep their houses relatively dry and it doesn’t often rain inside to bump up that humidity for Mr/Mrs Snake. You could try humid hides and all that jazz but carpet pythons are often buttholes and won’t use anything for its intended purpose. New hide? Better sit on top of it. New water bowl? Good place to poop. Chances are you will have lots of bad sheds or a mouldy ceiling if you go down the ambient humidity route.
Wire/Mesh: I’m not sure what kind of parrot cage you plan on using but if it is the kind I am thinking of... A) Never underestimate a snakes ability to escape. I have mine in sealed melamine enclosures and still have jail breaks. B) Nose rub is painful, ugly and the reality of keeping large pythons with large portions of mesh. C) You will probably have to line the enclosure with perspex or melamine for the Temps and Humidity reasons so you may as well have just bought a regular enclosure. D) High humidity and wire frames = rust.
Exposure: I am sure that you planned on giving them a few hides to retreat to. However the enclosure being constantly exposed to open air will allow various smells (perhaps you have other pets), sounds and many other stressing factors to constantly bombard your lovely pet who will only have 5x3 ft to ‘escape’ in. Depending on the individual, you likely could wind up with an animal that is cage defensive, a trouble feeder and/or constantly on the run.
If I am wrong and you plan to keep this enclosure outside, I mean it can work, housing snakes outdoors in aviaries is common here given you live in the region that the snakes occur natively and appropriately furnish the enclosure. However these are generally around 6x6ft minimum to allow proper regulation and temperature gradients. Without wanting to be rude, buy a proper reptile enclosure. The reason hobbiests do the things the way we do is through decades of experience being passed through different keepers. Keeping reptiles in parrot cages would be super cool visually but just isn't the most viable choice.
Little scratches for the little dragon!
I’ll never get tired of my macro lens or green tree pythons noses.
Quality sun time with this pretty lady.
He was so tiny once upon a time!
you're very pretty!! it's nice to see some fellow girls in the reptile hobby, sometimes it feels a little lonesome 💖
Thank you very much! That’s so sweet of you to say. You will find no shortage of fellow female keepers on Tumblr, we are blessed with a great bunch of people (of all genders!) here. If you ever want to have a good old chat with another crazy reptile lady, feel free to hit me up. I’m always down for snake talk!
I still miss you all the time little man.
Little cutie snuck out for a late night hop whilst I was trying to catch him a cricket!
I’ll never get over how pretty this girl is.
What is she she is beautiful
She is a jungle carpet python - Morelia spilota cheynei <3
I love seeing that pretty blue tongue!
She looks so innocent.
before the chOMP
The innocence before the chompening
She is innocent. She is a snake, not a monster. A cat tortures a bird or mouse unmercifully…But the cat is innocent. It is a cat…That’s what eons of evolution have taught it to do. Same with snakes, who almost always will leave you alone if you leave them alone. TgT
No. She IS a monster. She is Satan incarnate. She will chase you across the room. She has bitten my eyeball. She is the antichrist.
And I love her for it.
I’ll never get over how pretty this girl is.
