How Much Is a Facebook Friend Worth?

In this article, it is found that when you "like" something on Facebook you are essentially worth $174.17 to a company. The reason is quite simple. People who "like" brands on Facebook tend to be more loyal and in turn spend more money on that brand. I thought this was interesting because we have been talking all semester about how imporant it is for companies to engage in social media and this shows exactly why. The article goes further to explain other reasons why Facebook is important and it says that fans on Facebook are generally more satisfied with their brands and they have the ability to become "superconsumers."

The Class

Overall, I enjoyed the class and I think it had a lot to offer. Social Media is becoming such a large part of companies and it is important to know and understand. I enjoyed working with Tumblr because it was something new to me. I've had a Facebook and Twitter for a while so Tumblr was something different to learn. One thing I would change about the class is I think we could have focused less on definitions from the book and more on working on the actual social media sites in class. The days that we went to the library and had hands on activities were not only the most intersting but they were the most useful. I liked when we had posts on Tumblr and we learned about different things like the Klout score or the way to link all of our sites together.

I chose to look at Victoria's Secret Pink's Facebook page. I believe they are doing the right thing because not only do they have over 13 million likes but it is a very active page. They have five posts since Sunday alone and each post tries to engage their consumers. They have multiple posts with pictures and they post about upcoming events such as new stores that are opening. This is not only a good promotional method but it is something that people would want to know and be aware of. They also have correctly used the about section to have a little description about what the store is for people that may not know.

All of the things that Victoria's Secret has done is what companies should do on social media. You want to have active pages so that it is more interesting to go to and it engages your consumers. Going to a page that has no posts, comments, or likes does not reflect well on the company because it takes away from the whole idea of social media. The more you promote through social media the better results you will see.

This image, supporting same-sex marriage, became a popular one last week during the Supreme Court hearing. An article on Yahoo, explained how this image was found all over social media, from people changing their profile pictures to just posting it to their websites. It was found anywhere from Facebook, to Twitter, to Pinterest. The fame came when celebrities such as Beyoncé and Fergie posted the images and were supportive of same-sex marriage. I thought this was interesting because it shows just how big social media can be and the impact it has on important topics. Social media might be a way for people to express random opinions or post things as simple as what they are eating that day, but it can impact a larger and politically debated idea.

As most of us are aware, Facebook is constantly changing. From the way it looks to what you are able to do on your newsfeed and timeline. The newest update is going to be towards the way your newsfeed works. They want stories to be bigger and pictures to be larger. They want it to be more interactive and give people the ability to be more in charge with what they see on their newsfeed.

Attempt at Guinness World Record

2,400 people from Lulea, Sweden attempted to break a Guinness World Record by being the most people to form a human hand on ice. Currently no record for a hand on ice exists but there is a record set in 2012 of 849 people from San Juan, Puerto Rico forming the largest hand. Now they are trying to gain the most likes on a Facebook photo. The record is currently held by an image of President Obama on election night.

Study: Twitter opinions don't match the mainstream

This article from CNN talks about how journalists are using Twitter as a go-to, to find out how the public feels about events, but Twitter and public views don't always match up. One of the main reasons they are finding is because of the difference between the age of Twitter users. Twitter is generally people below the age of 30 which is younger than the general public. I think for most of us this is pretty obvious because we see that mainly people our age are on Twitter. I think Twitter can be useful to companies or journalists writing about current topics to get different opinions but it should not be generalized. There are so many people, from older generations to younger people who don't care about social media, that don't use Twitter that it is impossible to assume what you see on there is how everyone feels.

social media journey.

I started my social media journey in middle school when I started using aim and Myspace. My best friend at the time created my Myspace page for me but once I got used to it I was on there almost everyday. I would post bulletins and change my profile page all the time to make it look "better." After the middle school phase I stopped using these two forms of social media and in my sophomore year of high school I created my Facebook page. I used Facebook to connect with all my friends and post pictures of main events like cheerleading at football games or dances. I also posted frequent updates about what I was doing at random times. Freshman year of college is when I created my Twitter account and started to find the real meaning of social media. I now have many accounts with Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and other websites. I get on these sites regularly, but what's most important is that I now know that some of these profiles can be useful for my future. Social Media is no longer just about making "cute" profile pages or ranting about your life in a status. It has become a professional image. So, if used in the right way, it will build your positive reputation to future employers.

klout score

My klout score is a 36. This number came from my twitter account alone, so if I were to connect this with my other social media accounts I believe my score would be even higher. I think this is a fairly accurate score because I am on twitter everyday and multiple times a day. Not only do I get on twitter to see other tweets but I am active with posting tweets, retweeting, and favoriting other tweets.

"touchdown Oreo"

As we all know there was a delay of the Super Bowl game because of a blackout. For the teams and for the viewers this wasn't very entertaining but for all kinds of brands it was a take-off of advertising. Based on this article, the winner is said to be Oreo. They tweeted a picture with the caption "You Can Still Dunk In The Dark." On February 4th, when this article was written, there were already 15,000 retweets. The comments in the article were about the importance of the ready to respond team that Oreo had and their efforts in planning ahead. They not only had ads prepared ahead of time, they had a 15 member social media team ready during the game, and they had an after the game plan for an ad based on the winner. I completely agree with this article and believe that Oreo went above and beyond other brands with their readiness. Many brands were active during the blackout but because of the preparation and creativity Oreo stood out the most. 

The comments in response to the article were either agreeing with the article and the awesome job that Oreo did or there was confusion among some people with what dunking an Oreo had to do with the darkness or football. People explained that it had nothing to do with football but it was a chance for Oreo to remind us that no matter what happens you can eat Oreos. Some people simply looked way into the ad and didn't see why it became so popular or didn't agree with the "fame" it has gotten. I would agree with the positive comments and believe the social media team successfully did their job and think it was a creative on the spot idea.
