StumbleUpon went downhill the moment Steve Ballmer started leaving reviews, personally, on websites.

Microsoft and ebay ruined that service. It went from being a genuinely good service to being an advertising platform. They removd the option to leave negative reviews on websites - there was no longer a 'thumbs down, and here's why' option on the review page.

StumbleUpon was the single best site index that has ever existed, and the best that probably ever will. We're at a point in history where it's not going to happen again. Not like that. There is just multiple orders of magnitude more slop now to crawl through. The simple authenticity of the early internet is gone.

Cloudhiker is NOT the same as the original StumbleUpon.

Some things about this post since getting quite a few notes:

1. If you see this post, highly recommend taking it as an opportunity to set a timer for 15 minutes and switch over to ACTIVITY YOU ENJOY. if after those 15 minutes, you want to go back to scrolling, that's okay!

2. Huge shout out to this popping up in my notifs often, bc I do go back to activity.

3. I think there are times where scrolling is fine. Right now, for example, I'm being connected to a machine for two hours to donate plasma and platelets. Yes this is a brag but it is also a time where scrolling is one of the few things I can do. (Though I will probably also read or watch something on phone lol)

I don't normally get uber but we've recently been camping places so remote there aren't even taxises. So I finally, after 3 recent Ubers, finally I got the Uber experience USAians describe: guy immediately offers us mints, says there's water in the side pockets, asks if we need more water, can we please give him 5 stars after the journey? How's the temperature should he crank up the AC? Drove like a mainiac for 10 minutes, asked if everything was okay anything else he could do for us, helped with our bags then asked us for 5 stars again with the voice of a hostage negotiator. I hope he's okay.

just saw a company describe a 6° sleeping bag as "4 season" like wow man how many seasons are you having per year if FOUR of them are above 6 degrees at NIGHT? Like bro. It gets down to 8 at night in SUMMER here unless we're doing another skin clawing apocalypse warm spell. so ive been meaning to do this poll for a while because my hypothesis is that seattle is the most Tumblr city, likely in the entire world. tumblr has a huge american majority userbase obviously, but just for comparison going forward, only 0.22% of the american population lives in seattle. as of this reblog, this poll is showing 4% of respondents are seattleites. given, this isnt scientific at all, because my blog just has a lot of seattle connections and seattle followers, but it's still an impressive bias

This is literally what people are talking about when they say AI will be used to mainstream widely held bigotry. LLMs are trained on frequency and probability -> straight relationships are more well represented in the dataset -> straight pronouns and terms become the "correct" normal.

This is a form of backdoor bigotry from both normative facts (there are more straight than gay relationships) and well represented bigoted beliefs (men are superior to women).

Combine this with the mass of people inclined to believe (and being encouraged to believe) that if AI says and does something it must be correct
