Justice for the Castiles and all Black people everywhere
A day of national shame--an ignorant billionaire put in charge of Department of Education in the US--as a payback for her help to get another intellectually arrested billionaire elected to the highest political office of the land! Everlasting shame to those 51 US senators who voted for this travesty! Proud of all the magnificent dedicated teachers in the New York public schools who have graced the education of my children with their caring and competent professionalism -- What nightmare these barbarians are dreaming for this nation: shot the borders to hardworking and educated immigrants, gut out public education and destroy public health, make education and health the privilege of the few and not the right of all, deregulate predatory capitalism, spend gargantuan billions on the military, demonize internal dissent, fabricate a delusional foreign threat, and prepare the state for a total neofascist control of the country-- And what do we have to oppose all this? A corrupt and dysfunctional Democratic Party and saccharine giggles by silly and useless SNL--nothing but massive public dissent on the model of BLM and Women's March on Washington and Dakota Access Pipeline protests can resist this systematic assault on the very fabric of civic life --

6 people were gunned down and murdered by a far-right terrorist while praying in a mosque in Quebec on Sunday. Yet, there are no headlines screaming "TERROR IN QUEBEC," no articles in newspapers around the world interviewing people who were gunned down for their faith, no pictures of the tears shed and no statements condemning "civilians killed in cold blood" by "ruthless terrorists" that "threaten us all." In the US, we are not being asked to put ourselves in their shoes. We are not told to imagine ourselves sitting in our own places of worship and hearing the bullets fly and the bodies fall. We don't compare horrific attacks on churches around the world with horrific attacks on mosques in North America; "our" pain is different from "theirs," the silence screams. And what of those who are both "us" and "them" in this equation? In Canada, there will be mourning. But no where else. Unlike an attack carried out by a Muslim, this is not a "global issue"; this is just something local for Canada to deal with. The Brandenburg Gate will not shine with the Canadian flag; no one will be asked to show "solidarity with Canada" or express their support "for Canada." This is how we know Islamophobia has worked at the most basic level. This is how we know that people - deep down - think we don't belong here. But we must remember them, and mourn them, and keep their memories alive. It is up to us to tell the world their stories. And we must warn the world that this WAS a terror attack, and this WAS an attack on all of us: and attack on Freedom, an attack on Freedom of Worship, and - at its core - an attack on humanity committed by a right-wing racist white nationalist whose goal is a war plunged into hatred, fear, and civilizational clash. We have to stop them. We have to humanize the victims, and remember the lives cut short. We must share our stories, and share our pain. This is the only way.

Goodbye Mr President! You were a fundamentally good man but a politically flawed president! After Bush we had every reason to trust your message of hope, before Trump you left us no reason to trust the goodness of the office you left behind! After you we will never see a national leader strong enough publicly to shed tear for the loss of an innocent American child to gun violence, nor will we forget how you watched with wanton cruelty as Palestinian children were slaughtered and went ahead and replenished the Israeli ammunitions to kill them more! There is a way you can redeem yourself of the sustained record of your cruelty, Mr President: stop mincing words when you see how American bombs kill Arab and Muslim children as American guns kill American children! Like President Carter you can be an infinitely better ex-President than you were a president! Admit to yourself what a calamity was Hillary Clinton that you and your wife so enthusiastically endorsed at the colossal cost of sabotaging Bernie Sanders' campaign and giving us Donald Trump, lend your vast popularity and political weight for a radical transformation of the Democratic Party to prevent two term Presidency of Trump, stop blocking Keith Ellison's leadership of DNC and let him lead your party back to political prominence! Learn from your mistakes that were partially responsible for giving us this dangerous inanity called Trump and do your best to prevent his second term by leading your party part ways with Clintonism and corruption (but I repeat myself!). You still have plenty of time ahead of you to determine how history will remember you: stop being such a fanatical centrist when the center of American politics has resulted in a Neanderthal like Trump! Move to the center of sanity and reason when speaking on domestic or global events! Will you? Please? Mr President? Godspeed!

Remember baby Jesus, child of Middle Eastern refugees. Remember baby Jesus, son of exiles forced to flee persecution in their homeland. Remember baby Jesus, rejected by all and forced to seek refuge among the animals. Remember Jesus, champion of the poor. Remember Jesus, who inspired those around him to revolt against the swindlers and the corrupt. Remember Jesus, executed by authorities intent on preserving law and order, wealth, and their own power. Remember Jesus, Palestinian Jewish prophet. And remember all the refugees living in camps this Christmas, denied a place to go. Remember the Syrian and Iraqi refugees, mistreated and denied entry in every country they flee to. Remember the Palestinians today living under military occupation in little Bethlehem, where he was born so long ago. Remember, year after year, that the Christmas message does not belong to the hate-mongerers, to the fear-mongerers, to the greedy, nor to the liars. It is a message for all, especially the meek, the poor, the humble, and those deemed the wretched of the Earth. This is the Christmas I know and remember every year.

"Nuke Iran, Maim Iranians!" I can still hear the chants of undergraduate students marching down Locust Walk as they passed by McNeal Building on University of Pennsylvania campus where the Department of Sociology was located in 1980 precisely at the moment when I was taking my grueling comprehensive MA exam! This was during the Iran Hostage Crisis of 1979-1981 when the Democratic President Jimmy Carter was in office --the perfectly liberal president who singled out and ordered all of us Iranian students to report to immigration officers coming to our campus to prove we were here legally, be yet again fingerprinted and put against a wall in the Bennett Hall on Penn Campus and be photographed--if anyone of us had "violated" the terms of our visas we would be deported--President Carter also ordered no more visas be issued to any Iranian students--which meant if we who were here left for Iran to visit our families or left even as far as Canada we risked not being allowed to come back-- which is exactly what happened in April 1980 when a group of Iranian students returning from Canada were detained at the U.S.-Canada border. Parvizi Sayyad later made a movie about this incident called "Checkpoint" (1987)-- While under this US visa restriction, I lost my mother in Iran in 1982 --unable to go and see her before she passed away or to attend her funeral --this visa restriction was issued by a Democratic president Jimmy Carter, a man for whom I now have the deepest admiration for what he has done for the sick, the poor, and the homeless after his presidency, and particularly for daring to utter the word "apartheid" about the Zionist occupation of Palestine-- Today in November 2016 I read on the same campus of my Alma Mater Penn, African-American students were subject to yet another upsurge of racial slurs --a university where the fraternities are notorious for verbal abuse of non-White students, to which I was consistently subjected along with my two closest classmates Allen and Milton --one Jewish and the other African-American-- The structural racism, anti-Semitism, and now Islamophobia endemic to American society is deep-rooted, pervasive, nasty, brutish, malignant, and incurable-- the rise in police brutality against African-Americans, the massive militarization of police in African-American communities such as in Ferguson, and the rise of Black Lives Matter movement against such atrocities all happened during the presidency of Barack Obama--the sweetheart of liberal America, and it was his now bosom buddy Hillary Clinton that BLM activists took to task for having called young black teenagers "predators" -- It is now a pernicious liberal lie to try to hide such historical facts and blame them all on one single notoriously nasty brutish vicious misogynist racist thug like Donald Trump in order to hide a much larger and uglier reality that includes their own circles-- Yesterday I saw the sweetheart of the US liberals, the malignant Islamophobe Bill Maher (close friend of Michael Moore who like any other white liberal gives himself the right and the privilege of deciding what is racism or Islamophobia and has issued a decree declaring that Bill Maher is not a racist Islamophobe) actually blaming Muslims for the rise of Donald Trump! Yes: Bill Maher believes we Muslims are responsible for the rise of Trump! (Gleefully reported by Liberal Zionists at Haaretz: http://www.haaretz.com/world-news/u-s-election-2016/1.752888?v=86F4B72B7E3F7CA298FA41EDC0AE1B9C). And what exactly was Donna Brazile, the scandalized interim head of the Democratic National Committee, doing yesterday at a conference hosted by the notorious Islamophobe Zionist David Horowitz--who has listed me and many of my other Columbia University colleagues among "the most dangerous professors" in America? (https://www.google.com/amp/mondoweiss.net/2016/11/islamophobic-gathering-florida/amp/?client=safari) -- At this point I am not sure which side of these two vicious circles --the liberal Democratic elite or the Neanderthal Republicans--do I detest more--and hold identically responsible for the calamity that has befallen this country --

“Our decent impulse, to recognize the ordeal of our veterans, has been used to obscure the fact that they died, they were crippled, for no good cause other than the power and profit of a few. Veterans Day, instead of an occasion for denouncing war, has become an occasion for bringing out the flags, the uniforms, the martial music, the patriotic speeches reeking with hypocrisy. Those who name holidays, playing on our genuine feeling for veterans, have turned a day that celebrated the end of a horror into a day to honor militarism.”

Do people who support the burkini ban really not understand that forcing Muslim women to unveil will have the opposite effect of what they want? Do they not understand that forcing women wearing burkinis to take them off will prevent them from going to the beach? That it will encourage those Islamophobic idiots who already yell at, harass, follow, and beat up women wearing veils? And that those women will thus be forced more and more to stay at home due to the virulent anti-veil sentiment brewing outside? Do they not understand that such attempts to force women to deveil only empower the most patriarchal, misogynistic aspects of Muslim societies by literally proving them right about Western hypocrisy regarding freedom and human rights? That using the police's guns to humiliate people does not to lead to a conversation, it only leads to pain and anger, and rightfully so? Do they not realize this road has been travelled before? That in Iran in the 1930s, a law was passed that banned chador and in the years that followed police ripped the veils off of thousands of women, forcing many who previously took part in society to return to their homes for fear of being humiliated for their clothing? That years later after this forced deveiling, the same country would institute forced veiling as a direct ideological response? That patriarchy and misogyny breed patriarchy and misogyny? Whatever you think about veiling is irrelevant. Attacking women for what they wear, for the presence or lack thereof of a piece of cloth above their head, is misogyny, pure and simple. Arguing that women wearing cloth around their bodies is a threat to national security and to secularism doesn't make any sense and is completely counterproductive, unless your goal is to terrify Muslim women from going outside for fear of being attacked. And if you are still proferring tepid apologies for this law, then you have made your position clear.

It appears that David Sonboly, the German boy of Iranian heritage who killed 10 people in Munich yesterday, was influenced by the writings of right-wing, Islamophobic European extremists and was distinctly full of hate toward immigrants in general and Turks in particular. Of the nine people he killed, three were Turks, three were Kosovans, and one was Greek. It appears he was specifically targeting Muslims and immigrants. Many are now asking how a child of Iranian immigrants could have become infatuated with people like Anders Breivik, a right-wing Christian extremist who killed 77 people in Norway in 2011 in a terror attack targeting "multiculturalism." Some Iranians - particularly in the Diaspora - subscribe to the "Aryan" racial theory promoted by European thinkers in the earlier 20th century. This combines with their dislike for their own government - which too often translates into rabid Islamophobia, as they are unable to distinguish between the actions of the Iranian government and Islam as a whole - to emerge into a disgusting mix of pseudo-scientific racial ideology that sees "Iranians" as "Aryan brothers." Adopting this weird ideology is fundamentally an attempt by Iranians in the Diaspora assimilate, to distinguish themselves from other immigrants by claiming to be as close to Europe and Whiteness as possible. It is pathetic, stupid, and all-too-common in late-night chatboards frequented by depressed 18-year-old Iranians in Diaspora, i.e. people like David Sonboly. Although it was largely abandoned in Europe after being put to use by Hitler in the Holocaust, in Iran (and India) the idea that Indians, Iranians, and Europeans shared a genetic Aryan lineage and that this lineage distinguished them from "mongrel" Turks, Arabs, and "Muslims" as a category more broadly still holds certain sway. Right-wing European extremism intersects perfectly with this Aryanist theory - popular among young, diasporic Iranian men who spend too much time trolling people on the internet - in its flagrant and violent Islamophobia, where hatred for Islam, for Arabs, for Turks, and for all others who don't fit into the "Aryan theory" all come together in a disgustingly racist maelstrom. This is a wake up call for the Iranian diaspora: ENOUGH with these bullshit pseudo-scientific racialist theories, ENOUGH with this Islamophobia disguised as critique of the Iranian government, ENOUGH with these attempts to assimilate by aiming to prove our whiteness by all means possible. ENOUGH.

When their children are killed, mothers are expected to keep the peace and to work for change. But nothing changes.
