there was, in all of this, a sense of irony – for all his best efforts, all his years of waiting, the only one left to suffer in eternal darkness would be him. no light would reach here, there had been no reason for it to do so ( no reason for it to grant him any such mercy ), there hadn’t been any cause – until now. descent was a steep one, guided only by a torch – she had no reason for this, and yet. if this were any other time, to be on her own ( for the most part, at least, ravus had insisted otherwise, ravus was waiting ) may have been unsettling, unwanted, but how could it be now, when he – the failure, the doomed – could now only DREAM of finishing the job? “ i must say – this suits you. ”

an absence of light, an eternity in darkness, strengthens and sharpens many things. the stubbornness of survival. the thirst for revenge. the predator-like patience. and, in a more literal sense, one’s hearing. he can detect the far-off footsteps as they begin to descend, softer than that of the king or other men who put him here. a curling of fists is the only modicum of movement permitted by his chains. his muscles are cramping, his stomach threatening to turn in on itself from hunger, but it is a dull pain. he has endured it before. and it will not stop him from raising his head as regally as possible. after all, this is a guest in his palace.
and what a guest indeed. already the dank, vermin-ridden cell seems impossibly brightened by her blinding presence. it disgusts him. here is the light once more, to remind him of what could have been his, and tease him with the denial his existence has been fraught with. denial of the throne, then of death, then of vengeance. now of freedom. and yet, he finds he can let out a laugh. “while not the most comfortable of accommodations, i find that i’m inclined to agree with you.” a laugh, but no thanks. not for she who helped his foolish descendant continue living the lie of his lineage. “i did not think to find you here, dear lunafreya. to what do i owe such an honour? surely your husband has not already become so boring that you’re compelled to seek my sorry company instead.”
Rejection hurts, doesn’t it?

A FOOLISH GLIMMER OF HOPE UNEARTHED FROM HIS STEEL COMPOSURE. it was a sensation experienced within, caged by hollow ribs. heart racing, running further than his legs could have ever taken him ( had he ran / had he chosen to abandon his mother as the lucian king had ) at last, at last his voice is heard. and by the chancellor no less! though a nefarious and enigmatic man, from what he has come to understand from the passing whispers, not an incompetent one.
‘til the other speaks with an odd depiction of joy that one can daresay accuse as mockery. the subtle coyness in the boy’s smile promptly fades, a sharp inhale the remedy to the sting of the other’s words. an honest mistake, perhaps? for had he asked anyone else, he would be redirected to a cold laden grave. my father had the fortune of his bones turning to dust long before his home did. but the boy king bites his tongue, for if there is bark in his words then he will lose all chance at progress.
❝ you misunderstand me. ❞ he reiterates, posture stiffening. he was briefly unsettled before this, shuddering at the other’s unneeded display of affection. ( are you not the hands which gave the orders? / the hands which are truly caked with my mother’s blood? ) ❝ and you needn’t venture far. ❞
i am ravus, son of her highness queen sylva. first of his name, first in line. i am of what remains ; my sister & i. i am her protector, her last line of defense. i am all that is left, all that stands between a true conquest. i am ravus nox fleueret. this is my home. and you can’t frighten me. ❝ – because you see, i am the king. ❞
and now mirth cannot be contained — it spills forth in a burst of hearty laughter, sharp and cold and more hurtful than any insult he could lend words to. it dies as soon as it begins (a shame the same could not have been said for this kingdom, but oh well; better late than never) and he has to hold himself back from slapping a hand on the boy’s back. instead he lightly places it on a shoulder, turning the small form slightly to better look upon him.
the makings of great kings can be seen when they’re born, it’s been said. no doubt by some fool who’d never actually met one. all the man cloaked in shadow sees now is a pale and frightened child, making a commendable yet ultimately futile attempt to cling to whatever delusions of courage remain after experiencing firsthand the tragedies of the real world. there is no wit, no grace, no hint of an air of mobility. but then, perhaps he’s being too harsh on the lad. whispers of the past do not help with that. to think there could be an heir with less worth than somnus yet with such a similar look to the eyes...
“shall i tell you a secret, my boy?” the grip on ravus’ shoulder tightens just a fraction as the chancellor kneels down before him. “oh, but i’m sure you know it already, being such a royal soul.” he leans in close, the grin taking on a friendlier edge, but he can’t quite bring himself to let go of the mocking glint in his amber irises. “if one must call himself king, he is no true king.”
abruptly he stands, seething delight slipping out in a single quiet chuckle, cold hand shifting from shoulder to back as he guides this realm’s great and mighty sovereign back towards the manor’s entrance. “but seeing as you have only recently come unto the title, i think we can permit this small first error of yours, nay? and i do hope you can forgive my impropriety, highness. i would be delighted to hear what you have to say. shall we walk?” he’s already striding on, heading back out towards the once-fair gardens and forests bordering the manor grounds, now still burning as conquerors explore their new territory and enjoy the spoils of war.
“now then, allies, you said?” it’s a cruel game he’s about to play now, but also a mercy, and a warning that whatever misfortune this boy may face, none shall be so cruel as that he will receive from ardyn. “what precisely did you have in mind?”
@ignominiy
what good is a king who cannot rule his people? who cannot command their respect, the love and devotion which should be rightly accorded to the gods’ chosen? yet ‘rule’ and ‘command’ are not synonymous with ‘control’; to exert such power would render them deserving of a revolution such as this. but his brother is innocent, is he not? a vaunted champion of the people, the one all found in order to be healed of the great affliction. for them to turn against him seemingly on a whim is troubling and not a slight to be taken lightly. somnus will not allow it to go unpunished.
or so he tells himself in the watches of the night, finding himself alone in the halls of lucis with nought but his own musings. the view of the city is as silent as any other evening yet the sight of his brother being carried away is still beholden in his mind; struggling amidst a raging mob of hearts gripped with wild and untamed fear. it’s a sickening image, one that love and duty compels him to dispel and rectify with hunting down those that stole away their saviour. but he pauses, patient, telling those awaiting his word that he’s contemplating every course of action. in his heart he wonders if no course may be the path to take. for has he not desired this? a chance to gain but a shred of the adoration heaped upon his messianic sibling. what use does he have for it? what good will it do for the blight upon his soul? a doomed and dead man walking, they say, and perhaps they have the right of it.
but no. they both are the first in a long line that history will stand upon for ages hence; somnus will not see it fall because he could not resist urges which would corrupt a lesser soul (and if he were, he would not leave it to the common rabble to make the mistake of giving the victim a chance to slip away). and so come the dawn he rides out at the head of a great host, speeding on until he comes to the place where they’ve tied ardyn to endure his suffering. he ignores how the spilled blood looks more black than red as he dismounts, the guards chasing off the breaking crowd turned cowards. his eyes are alight with worry and he quickly cuts through the rope around ardyn’s wrists but doesn’t quite manage to catch him.
leaning down (leaning over, above him for once), he places a gentle hand on fallen one’s shoulder. “on your feet, brother. your time will not come today.”

A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC / A GATHERING OF SHADOWS by v. e. schwab sentence meme.
❛ I’d rather die on an adventure than live standing still. ❜
❛ After all, you can kill people, but you cannot kill magic. Not truly. ❜
❛ Impossible. What a useless word, in a world with magic. ❜
❛ Everyone thinks I have a death wish, you know? But I don’t want to die – dying is easy. No, I want to live, but getting close to death is the only way to feel alive. And once you do, it makes you realize that everything you were actually doing before wasn’t actually living. It was just making do. Call me crazy, but I think we do the best living when the stakes are high. ❜
❛ You have two faces. One you wear for the world at large, and the one you wear for those you love. ❜
❛ Everyone’s immortal until they’re not. ❜
❛ It is as it is. It cannot be undone. So please, be grateful, and be done with it. ❜
❛ The thing about freedom? It doesn’t come naturally. Almost no one has it handed to them. I’m free because I fought for it. ❜
❛ I know you can do this. I know you can hear me. Stay with me. Listen to my voice. ❜
❛ Maybe you just got a taste of what it really means to be alive. You almost died. So now you know what it feels like to live. To fear for that life. To fight for it. And once you know, well, there’s no going back. ❜
❛ You made a mistake. Everybody makes them. Even me. I’ve made many. It’s only fair that you made one. ❜
❛ I did only what I had to do. If I could have given my life for yours, I would have. ❜
❛ A kiss for luck. Not that I need it. ❜
❛ I know. I know what and who you are. What will you do? Kill me? ❜
❛ Why am I the only one in this fucking world to be held accountable for my actions? ❜
❛ Aren’t you afraid of dying? ❜
❛ I’m sorry. For whatever happened to you. For whoever hurt you so deeply that you see things like friends and fondness as weapons instead of shields. ❜
❛ You know so little of war. Battles may be fought from the outside in, but wars are won from the inside out. ❜
❛ Between the two of us, we’ll tear the whole world down. ❜
❛ I am going to cut that smile off your face. ❜
❛ It hurts. More than dying ever did. There are days when I feel like I deserve this. ❜
❛ Death doesn’t scare me. Not nearly as much as the idea of wasting a perfectly good life in fear of it. ❜
❛ You’re always so eager to slash and stab, why couldn’t you have stabbed him. ❜
❛ Which is it, huh? You’re angry at me, or worried about me, or happy to see me? Because I can’t keep up. ❜
❛ Wouldn’t it be amazing, if we got away with it? ❜
