“Can a state create the kind of memory that, say, a mother has of a child, a brother has of a sister, where you love somebody, right, but you don’t think that they’re perfect, but you would leap in front of a truck for them nevertheless. Can a state have that kind of patriotism? Can that kind of love for country actually exist? Or is the only kind of love of country where- “No, no we’re the best, we’re better than everybody else and we’ve never done anything wrong and if we did do anything wrong everything about our good so clearly outweighs our bad that we don’t really need to talk about it.”
