Artist Statement
My concentration in character design has taught me the process of creating model sheets intended for use in animated films. I plan to continue my study of character design and to gain knowledge about visual symbolism in relation to individual psyche. My reasons for pursuing this craft include a personal interest in the art of animation, as well as the desire to establish a career within the entertainment industry.
I begin with loose experimental sketches and move onto digital media with each piece I create. Because of my concern with social issues, I based my concentration work loosely on a narrative designed to call attention to problems such as police brutality, sex trafficking, sexism, and racism. My final pieces serve as visual manifestations of individual personalities related to these social issues. If given the opportunity, I one day hope to expand my narrative into at least a short film.
Concentration Paper: Introduction
As an aspiring animation major, studying character design is a necessary part of my growth and development as an artist. I chose to concentrate in character design because of its relevancy to my future aspirations, and because of the interest and fascination that I have always had with visually representing a character's visceral traits. I began work in my concentration by constructing a loose narrative around societal issues that I feel need attention drawn to them, and then began focusing my attention on creating a cast of characters whose personalities were applicable to their setting. After establishing their internal traits, I designed each characters visual appearance and refined each drawing digitally. My final pieces were formatted as model sheets, as they would be in the professional industry. Each piece in my concentration demonstrates an attention to design elements visual symbolism while maintaining its own unique voice, and the overall body of work is consistent in its stabilization and intentional simplification of the figure.
In my art (within my concentration) I intend to create a cast of characters (more realistically, a minimum of four characters- considering my time constraints). These characters may become part of a larger project (animation of graphic novel?) that tackles the issues of police brutality and social inequality, via a narrative set in a futuristic space age. I am driven by a love for creativity & design, as well as a desire to bring attention and to and promote awareness of social problems.
