“Wake up.”
The words are as sharp as the little stones digging into Jean’s back. He makes an unhappy, sleepy sound, ready to ask for five more minutes, but Reiner’s voice is quickly followed by his hand shaking him awake.
Wait. Reiner.
Jean’s eyes snap open with no further assistance. When did he even manage to fall asleep? How? The cave is filled with smoke—thick and suffocating, irritating his throat and making his eyes water. He coughs, but before he can say anything, Reiner finally yanks him up onto his feet.
“The fuck?”
He tries to push Braun away, but the slimy bastard doesn’t budge. No wonder. Jean can feel the dried blood adorning his own face, can feel that he lost more of it than he anticipated. He’s light-headed and barely able to stand on his own—if Reiner lets go of his arm, he’ll surely flop like a fish.
Braun, on the other hand, looks well-rested and regenerated, nothing like someone who almost got cooked alive. His eyes glow in a distinctly non-human way—one that tells Jean there is absolutely no fucking fairness in the world.
Because his friends got hunted down, one by one, like rabbits. They weren’t given a chance to rest. They never had the powers that would allow them to stand up to their enemies.

Jean is lying on the bed, his thumb ghosting over Reiner’s business card. Candlelight flickers lazily in the darkness of the room, turning the letters printed on the cardboard color of liquid honey—the color of that bastard’s eyes.
Only three days have passed, but this little thing has somehow managed to make Jean’s entire bedding smell like Braun. If anyone asks—he’s absolutely appalled by this fact.
Persuaded by Levi’s rather sour looks and overall morbid expression, Erwin mercifully granted Jean some time to decide whether he’d like to take on the mission of befriending Reiner, or not. And Jean did think about it. Carefully. He contemplated his options and possible outcomes of the task ahead. Given Braun’s vivid interest in Jean, getting close to him shouldn’t be difficult.
