#11, because I have Hayloft Scene Feelings (TM) and I want to know yours
11. It has been debated that Melchior actually rapes Wendla in the hayloft. Do you agree or disagree? (Specifically the musical, not the original script.)
do i think it was rape, you mean? intent says no, because iirc sater has stated that they rewrote the scene as consensual in order to make melchior a more likable hero. portrayal and audience interpretation definitely play a part, though. it's just...not so black and white. melchior was more knowledgeable and knew what he was doing. he definitely took advantage of her. but the thing is, they were both caught up in hormones and feelings. that YES!!!! at the end is meant to emphasize wendla's consent and willing participation, and i think that discounting that is a disservice to her intelligence and agency. IN CONCLUSION: melchior is a douchebag, wendla is innocent but not stupid, and he coerced her but they made a mutual decision to bump uglies. it's shady in the beginning of the scene, but the YES of conviction makes all the difference. and then there's "whispering", which solidifies wendla's arc as one of her own making. i let him love me so let that be my story. she claims her choices, and it's easy to paint her as a victim of society and circumstance -- because she is -- but she's kind of a badass, too.

32. Who's a character you wanted to hear/see more onstage?
call me when spring awakening passes the bechdel test.
37. If you had to take over the life of one of the characters, who's life would it be?
i guess anna? nothing truly terrible happens to her.
14. Favorite scene in Act 1.
i think i'd say "my junk"! there's so much going on, and it says a lot about the characters depending on who's doing the background acting. plus it's the last bit of levity before shit starts to hit the fan. maybe the beating scene too, because when played right it's breathtaking to watch. (in an analysis of the human psyche way, not a...creepy way.)
patta asked you:
oh and 23
23. If you could wear one characters outfit for a day, whose outfit would you wear and which one?
THIS IS SUCH AN OBC-BIASED QUESTION, omg not all productions will have the same costumes! that being said, the kindergarten dress is gorgeous and i have been looking for an appropriate substitute for my entire life. i also like lindsay pearce's cardigan outfit, as it is very similar to stuff i would wear anyway. *___*
eightylines asked you:
i read 2 and 3 together and thought it said, "what attracted you to frank wedekind?" so you should answer that. also: 10, 14, 35 heh heh, 39? also 33 of course~~
2 + 3. What attracted you to Frank Wedekind?
for some reason i started singing "rock me sexy jesus" in my head and idk why. so pretend i am phoebe strole and singing my answer thusly.
35. Have you heard the workshop demos? What songs do you wish they included or hadn't replaced?
MMM GREAT SEX INDEED. aside from all your answers which were brilliant duh, i love love love "the clouds will drift away". "those you've known" is more appropriate i guess, and lol the masked man is long gone, but musically it is just SO GOOD. so good. A+++, duncan.
39. How would you feel if Spring Awakening was turned into a movie?
the thing about spring awakening is that it's more about what's going on...abstractly...i guess. not necessarily what's happening in the narrative playing out onstage. i feel like a straightforward depiction would be a more successful movie, but you'd lose a lot of the essence. and a lot of the ~essence~ comes from the ability to suspend disbelief in the theatre. it's a lot easier to accept a bunch of teenagers pushing a sexloft onstage than it would be on film. i mean you could have a dream sequence i guess, or a split screen? idk how you'd do it. i hope mcg fares well, or at least defers to baz luhrmann or rob marshall or BOTH. also going with the suspension of disbelief, i REALLY REALLY HOPE they cast young. this is a tragedy, not a sex romp!!!!
butterscotchcreys asked you:

25. Which song do you find the most heartbreaking?
mmm...maybe "the dark i know well", for obvious reasons. and "those you've known" (god, these are such stock answers) because melchi's like, SHIT I ACTUALLY INDIRECTLY KILLED EVERYONE I'VE EVER LOVED.
Anonymous asked you:

5. Favorite Melchior: Jake Epstein, Jonathan Groff, Hunter Parrish?
again with the obc-centric questions! and yeah 1nt, but lol where is kyle? ANYWAY. jason hite is my melchior gabor now, but alas i cannot pensieve my experience for you all so i will say that i haven't seen a melchior i really...disliked. obviously there are parts i prefer from each performance, though, -- like jake epstein's hayloft and jonathan groff's totally fucked -- but if we're talking overall performance plus vocals, it's matthew finnen doyle. i wasn't a fan of everything he did piece by piece, but each choice he made fit so well with what he wanted to accomplish, and it just felt really real. plus he has a nice butt.
38. Favorite youtube video of the cast.
which cast???!?!? </pretentious> 1nt had the best vlogs, or maybe it is my nostalgia talking idk. this will always be a classic.
ailuruses asked you:
27, 36, 39!
27. Most played song from the musical on your iPod or musical device?
mama reprise (HARMONIIIIES) or "the mirror-blue night" (ANGST AND PRETTY SINGIIIIING), i think.
36. What do you like most about this musical?
i like how it shows the consequences of censorship and doesn't try to romanticize the tragedy. also indie rock musical, what up literally everything relevant to my interests.
thencanisay asked you:
2, 5 (or matthew?), 6, 16, 25, 33 (lololol), 37, 40, answer none/any/all, basically!
2. What attracted you to Spring Awakening?
the bitch of living video and the stagehand strike videos. best cast, best songs, etc.
6. Favorite quote(s) or lyric(s).
"i don't want anything i haven't had to fight for" lolooljk. maybe "so let that be my story", because in a way each character in the show (except most of the girls and maybe otto oops) makes a choice, and they accept the consequences. you could probably apply that quote to each character's arc.
16.Favorite ballad: The Guilty Ones or Whispering?
WHISPERIIIIING, always. the original version, though. the melchior version sounds nice but i prefer it as a solo.
40. How many times have you seen the musical?once in sf when they shot the b-roll videos (i sat onstage! technically i am in all the 1nt promo footage even if you cannot see me!), 10/3/08 1nt sf; 10/28 and 10/29/09 1nt san jose; and 9/1, 9/3, and 9/8 for the san jose rep production.
patta asked you:
oh and 33 too i almost forgot
33. Do you prefer 'Broadway' Lea Michele, 'Hollywood' Lea Michele, or you see no difference
ahahahaha okay what the actual fuck even is this question. i um. what. this has nothing to do with spring awakening as a piece of theatre and i am really uncomfortable with policing the way a person is supposed to be affected by mainstream fame and success. furthermore, i am absolutely disgusted by the amount of hate she gets in the broadway community for being an ambitious, successful, confident woman. emphasis on woman. if you hate lea michele, i want you to think really hard about how you feel about kanye west. if you worship him for the same reason you hate lea, you are doing it WRONG and you're tacky and i hate you.
