‘Speechless’ by Lady Gaga

Just recently, I heard a song called ‘Speechless’ by Lady Gaga. This song was released in 2009, though i’m only listening to it in 2016. I wish I heard it sooner, though. Both the lyrics and the tempo of the song really affected me, and is probably one of the most heartbreaking songs I have ever heard. It also came to me as a shock that this song was by Lady Gaga, because it seems very different than other songs she had made. But I love it. I believe that many people are able to relate to this song. To me, this song best represents a breakup because of the significant other doing something completely out of the blue. Throughout the song, Lady Gaga constantly sings ‘You’ve left me speechless’, and before that she says ‘I’ll never talk again’ and ‘I’ll never love again’. It is evident that the person that this song is directed towards had a huge impact on the singer’s life. It is understandable to assume that this person hurt the singer so extremely that they are stating that they refuse to talk and love again, whether it may be cheating or something else. Overall, this song hit me in the feels.

FOOD

Justin Trudeau

To be honest, I don’t know much about Justin Trudeau. All I know form when I learned about him in grade ten Civics is that he’s really good looking. I vividly remember Mr. Lannan giving us a worksheet with politicians and their faces and I was extremely attracted to Justin Trudeau, so I decided to google him up. I think that I know more about his father Pierre Trudeau more than him. I believe that his father was a great Prime Minister, and to me probably one of the greatest Prime Ministers in Canada. He is the reason that Quebec did not separate from Canada, and I think that he saved our country. Canada would be a wreck without Quebec, especially because it would result to more provinces separating Canada. Pierre also fought for universal health care, which is crucial to have. I also do remember learning that he invoked the War Measures Act during the ‘October Crisis’. But what I do know about Justin Trudeau, is that he wanted to legalize weed. He also allowed refugees inside the country, and is providing them with everything, as well as an education. What I dislike about it is the fact that Justin is not doing much to help the homeless in our communities, though providing the refugees and spending millions on anything and everything. And because of my law teacher last semester, I am also aware of his wife, Sophie Trudeau, and the first time I ever paid attention to her was when she sang for the MLK tribute. From then on, I was not able to take her seriously.

Hookups

Some people find joy and happiness in hookups. Maybe it’s the feeling of a physical attachment without any commitment involved, similar to the movies No Strings Attached and Friends with Benefits (except the part where they fall in love at the end). Or it might be the idea that after that one satisfying physical encounter, you will never experience it with the same person again, and can quickly move on. Though, there are some exceptions, such as if you both enjoyed it so much that they decide to continue it, keep it a secret between them, and agree on staying friends. This is coined by the term ‘friends with benefits’. Maybe for some, it’s the secrecy that attracts them towards hooking up. It may also be because experimenting with different types of people is what some love to do. It is already known that people are against hookups, since they believe that you should only do things with someone you are emotionally attached to or invested in. Though, it is understandable to agree that some people only want the physical activity without any emotional attachment. This may most likely be due to the fact that they do not want a relationship. My only advice is if you are the type of people who enjoy hookups, stay safe.

Prom Preparations

Prom shopping is more stressful than I thought it would be. There were two weeks left before prom and i still haven’t bought my dress, or any accessories or shoes. There is too much work to get done in school that prom is the last thing on my mind, up until all girls started talking about dresses and shoes. Every day, more girls are posting a picture of their dresses in our Facebook group, which give me more anxiety every single time a new dress is uploaded. Some girls are finding their ‘perfect’ prom dress, whereas I haven’t even started looking for mine. Prom may be considered a once in a lifetime opportunity and a stress-free night, but prom shopping for sure is not.

GO INTO UNIVERSITY SINGLE AND HOOK UP AND DATE AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU WANT. THERE ARE LIKE 50,000 STUDENTS TO CHOOSE FROM. SOME COUPLES KNOW THEY WON’T LAST YET THEY’RE HOLDING ONTO THE FALSE IDEA THAT THEY WILL. WHAT PISSES ME OFF THE MOST ARE THE COUPLES THAT ACT LIKE THEY’RE GOING TO GET MARRIED AND POP OUT BABIES ANYTIME SOON. PDA IS ALSO DISGUSTING TOO. TORONTO RAPTORS

This season, the Raptors made their city and whole country proud. Beating Miami Heat, they advanced to the East Conference Finals for the first time in history. I believe that the Raps were working extremely hard this season, which paid off. Even from the beginning, people did not believe that the Raptors would make it. They for sure believed that they were going to get slapped by Miami, but Toronto showed them. Sean Mcmanus made a poll asking who people think will win the NBA title, and the choices were Golden State Warriors, Oklahoma City Thunder, Cleveland Cavaliers, and “other”. This heated up fans and went to show how underrated Canada is, especially by Americans (but I don’t understand how Americans are dissing Canadians when their whole country sucks?) This fired up fans, It was a very intense time for the Raptors, but the fans supported them the whole way through. Being a fellow Torontonian, I would obviously support my home team the best way that I can. But being a seventeen year old girl with no money, I did not have the money to be able to watch any of their games inside the Air Canada Centre. But for the season, I was extremely thankful for what we call ‘Jurassic Park’, which were people who stayed outside the Air Canada Centre to watch the game. People who went to Jurassic Park were considered the fan base of Toronto, with fans cheering and hyping with the Raptors. There were many giveaways at Jurassic Park, such as t-shirts and towels. I had the chance of going to Jurassic Park twice, first when they played against the Heat, and second when it was their last game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. It was unfortunate that both times I went, they lost their games. I started to believe that me going to Jurassic Park was bad luck. But like all other Raptors fans, we are proud that they made it so far, and we wish them good luck for the next season! DON’T SLEEP ON TORONTO! Train hard Raptors, because the next stop is finals!

Seconds Apart

In 2011, After Dark Films released a movie called Seconds Apart. The film revolves around two twin brothers with a supernatural power - telekinesis. I realized that the movie had a dark theme to it after watching the boys murdered a group of guys only a few minutes into the movie. There was a mysterious vibe that the boys gave off, which attracted me to the boys and was probably one of the reasons why I decided to watch the movie until the very end. It is evident that The movie was quite difficult to understand until everything is revealed at the very end. Throughout the movie, the only thing you do realize is that the Trimble family is quite abnormal compared to everyone else in the movie. Detective Lampkin, who was in charge of the murder cases at their school, also had a dark past which are the reason for his hallucinations. His story was also quite difficult to fully understand, and even after watching the movie I had to put the pieces of the puzzle together myself. Most of the murders the twins were responsible for were quite brutal, though fascinating. It fascinated me watching the boys use their mental powers to make all of their murders look like suicide. I could easily distinguish the different personalities between the two brothers throughout the course of the movie, though it was impossible at the beginning because they did everything the same. Jonah is the sensitive one out of the two boys, as it is shown when he starts to develop feelings for the new girl at his school, Eve. Seth is recognized as the more harmful and hurtful brother, because he finds no guilt when murdering people, and even finds joy in it. They don’t clearly state the reason as to why the boys decide to murdering others, though every time they do, they record it and watch it afterwards. The brothers would record every murder they committed, and watch it over when they got home. Each brother would ask the other if they felt ‘it’, but they would always answer no. The ‘it’ that they feel will not be fully known until the very end of the movie. This movie is for sure a psychological thriller and mystery that people will enjoy, only if they are able to understand it.

Pull A String, A Puppet Moves (assignment #3)

Question: What is it you realize? What is it you don’t know?

There are many things in this world that are unknown of. Sometimes, it may even be our own thoughts and feelings. In the poem, it is evident that the narrator doesn’t know why they got drunk and what they may be feeling. The only thing that most people are aware of are the unfortunate events happening to them, and who or what they lost. At the beginning of the poem it reads “every man must realize that it can all disappear very quickly: the cat, the woman, the job, the front tire, the bed, the walls, the room; all our necessities including love, rest on the foundations of sand -”. To my interpretation, people do not realize that what they have at the moment can disappear at any moment in time. Nothing is permanent, even the person you thought was going to love and be with you forever. You can lose everything in a blink of an eye, and sometimes you don’t know the reasons why. Maybe the person you love fell in love with someone else, or maybe you took her for granted. You are able to lose everything as quickly as quicksand, and don't realize what you had until it’s gone. There are also many things in the world that people aren’t aware of, happening all over the world. “The death of a boy in Hong Kong or a blizzard in Omaha...” Every minute, something tragic happens to someone, whether it be across the world or in your own neighbourhood. We don’t realize these problems that occur, should it be poverty, murder, etc. because we are too busy making our own life our only worries.

‘Secret Love Song’: Forbidden Love?

Not a long while ago, I’ve listened to a song called ‘Secret Love Song’ by Little Mix featuring Jason Derulo. To be completely honest, I fell completely in love with the song as soon as I heard it. I loved every part of it, from the tempo to the lyrics. But focusing on the lyrics, I assumed that the main theme is forbidden love. And I believe that forbidden love is one of the most heartbreaking things that someone can experience in their life. There are many possibilities for forbidden love occuring. A major example of this is one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays, Romeo and Juliet.

Forbidden love can happen for many different reasons. A few examples I can think of are per say a family, friends or even society who are not accepting, the fear of ruining friendships, the distance between the two individuals, or like in the song, that person you may be in love with is already with someone else.

There are certain lyrics that caught my attention while listening to the song. Firstly, the chorus quotes “Why can’t you hold me in the street? Why can’t I kiss you on the dance floor? I wish that it could be like that. Why can’t we be like that? ‘Cause I’m yours.” The singer is showing obvious signs of wanting to be more than just friends with the person they’re in love with, though it cannot happen. And even though they are not necessarily a couple, the singer claims that they belong to that other person, meaning that even though they cannot be together, they still love them unconditionally.

Also, in other parts of the songs, the lyrics hint more about a forbidden love. In one part the person sings about how obvious it is that the person is perfect for them, but they will never show it on their face. Also, near the end, Jason sings “And nobody knows I’m in love with someone’s baby. I don’t wanna hide us away.” This makes it evident that he is in love with someone who is already in a relationship. The song title makes is clear evidence of the meaning of the song, as well as their mentioning of having a love that is hopeless.

The irrational fear of terrorism

Many people in society today have an extreme phobia of terrorists and terrorist attacks. Now, many people in diverse countries are labeling those as a different religion as terrorists. It is unacceptable that people poeple are making offensive and racist remarks because they claim to “look like terrorists”. It has also shown in the news about two weeks ago that a Sikh man was viciously attacked by a few Quebec men, who were yelling at him in French and pointing at is turban. They knocked him to the ground and constantly beat him, and even went as far as knocking his turban off.

Watching this, I was completely shocked. It first surprised me how cruel people could be. The man was not causing any harm to anyone, and was just walking on the sidewalk. Also, the people that attacked him were complete strangers. Those men attacked an innocent man on a street who was just minding his own business. This just goes to show how harsh some people are.

In my opinion, the fear of terrorism is irrational. Yes, the fear of being attacked by others from another country may be fearful for some, but what makes it any different than those people who attack citizens within their own country? Is there really a difference between a murder by someone from another country and a murder between someone from the same country? For some though, there is a great difference. Even the thought of your whole country being attacked frighten many individuals, but even so, it is foolish to only fear those such as immigrants, rather than those that are from within the same country. Aren’t more crimes committed by people in the same country/city than people from different countries?

Countries and borders

I believe that borders and countries should exist, for many obvious reasons. For example, different countries establish different types of governments, some of which are unacceptable. If countries and borders did not exist, there is a possibility that the whole world would be under a complete dictatorship. We can take Hitler as an example; if different countries and borders were non existent, would there not be a possibility that the Nazi’s would still be in power? With different countries, peace treaties among countries are established. If there were none, then there would be a great resistance towards the government, and war would also be present. Some countries with different governments are able to establish whether or not a government in another country is treating their citizens unjust, and if so, there are military troops in different countries for situations such as these ones. The United Nations would not cease to exist if there were no countries and borders.

Youth today

Statistics show that the average high school student today has the same level of anxiety as the average psychiatric patient in the early 1950's. Some people may wonder how something like that could be possible, because “youth have nothing to worry about”. There are many factors that lead to youth being overly stressed today. In my opinion, this is most likely to be true when speaking about school. For high school students, the courses you take and the marks you have determine what you can and cannot be in the future. Nowadays, acceptance grades for admission into university as well as tuition fees are drastically increasing. There is great competition in your senior year, which causes even more anxiety for them. The scariest moment for a student is not being accepted anywhere. But stress does not only apply to high school students. This also applies to post-secondary students, who have an extreme amount of work to get done in such a short period of time. These students strive for high marks in order to achieve their masters or bachelors in the end. Many youth today are completely overwhelmed with everything going on around them like for some it may be balancing school and work. Though this may not always be the case, young people will always have something to stress about, whether school or relationship problems.

Senior year

Homework on top of tests on top of more assignments, all for just a piece of paper saying that I’ve been accepted. I assumed that this year would be slightly easier, because I have no more math and science. I vividly remember getting my timetable mailed to me in the summer and telling myself that it was going to be an easy year. What a lie that was. I have never felt so overwhelmed in my life, with a bunch of assignments and tests being thrown at me so quickly. Most teachers would say “you should get used to it, because you’re going to be going into university soon.” In all honesty, I have never felt so stressed before. On top of stressing over school work and tests, there is also college and university applications as well as prom and graduation. Some of us don’t even know what we’re going to do with our lives after high school. I for one, am still indecisive about the two programs I want to go into, as well as whether or not I want to go into college or university. I also think that out of my last four years in high school, senior by far had the most drama involved. I am finally coming to accept the fact that friends come and go, and most of the friends I have right now, I’m probably not even going to speak to after I graduate. But my friends are keeping me on my feet and are always there when things seem too much for me, and I’m extremely thankful because I know they’re dealing with their own personal problems right now as well. I am also grateful that the teacher I’ve had this year were extremely supportive and gave a lot of post-secondary tips, which made things a little bit easier for me. Grade twelve is extremely overwhelming right now, but I know for sure that I’m going to miss it once I’m gone.

Is social media a barrier to meaningful communication?

Technology has developed rapidly in the last decade. Nowadays, most youth spend much of their time on social media everyday. Websites such as twitter, snapchat, facebook, tumblr, and youtube have taken over. In my opinion, social media is a barrier to meaningful communication, but in some cases it is not. For instance, social media is sometimes used to connect and keep in touch with family and friends in per say another country, which is this case is acceptable because you cannot see these people physically. Though now, many people, especially youth, are using social media constantly to the point where being with a person physically isn’t an option anymore. Some examples occur such as being in the same room as people, or even just one person, and both or all parties are on social media. Also, in some cases, people are also using social media to message those in the same house, sometimes even in the same room. Social media is the reason as to why most people are very awkward in person. There is more confidence behind the screen than in person, and people are not trying hard enough to get to know one another, but instead are judging people based on how quickly they reply, or how they text.
