Analyzing old myth panels

first up,

in hind-sight, this is a panel with quite the comical/ satirical air to it. But I think it really shines through the dynamic between the cup bros. For one(and most telling), cupheads eyes. Cuphead has quite big eyes normally. And Nort and Fly have confirmed he has quite the bug puppy eyes at times. But in this panel, his eyes are drawn quite small, distressed. His facial expression displays no coy playfulness that cuphead usually encapsulates. He looks worried, frowning and staring up at mugman. Almost like he’s looking up at an unimpressed mugman for approval. He seems genuinely distressed about messing up their mission, like he really feels bad for setting them back. Mugman’s expression here is really telling too, he IS unimpressed- but not angry, almost like he expects this kind of trouble for cuphead. Which makes Cuphead’s reaction all the more heart breaking given we know how Cuphead feels Mugman often looks down on him. This scene takes this very literally, cuphead lays bleeding on the floor while mugman coldly stands above him, having to be the one to pick cuphead off the ground and ‘save’ him. I REALLY like and want to emphasize how desperate this scene portrays cuphead, he NEEDS mugman’s assurance that he isn’t disappointed in him, that he still loves him. And I think this scene compiled with this-

really gives the reader a deeper look into their relationship. Mugman IS disappointed in his brother, he loathes him for putting them in these situations. But to admit this to cuphead aloud would shatter him. THEYRE SOO HEART BREAKING because Cuphead looks up to his brother, he WANTS Mugman to be proud of him. And mugman knows this.
