"you could perhaps try to show your real emotions - I'd hate to watch both you and your sister pretend that we are all on a flying cloud of joy," Elliot noted and turned his head to Cain, eating an apple he'd grabbed from the food table. To think the two were still friends, even after his father had annulled his betrothal to his sister. sometimes Elliot knew he took advantage of Cain and his friendship, after all, Elliot would do anything to get William out of Azkaban, even if it cost him his own soul. "The garden looks nice Lockhart, I guess you had little to do with the planting?" he smirked before watching the pansies and snowdrops, losing his smile completely. "Not too much of a fan of those, " he murmured, pointing to the ones Victoria had mentioned in their meeting.

cain was ready with a barb on his tongue, easily recognizing the voice of elliot. " ah, but why on earth would i do that, ashewood? you'd sooner convince me to break my wand. " he huffed, but he wasn't being mean. cain's voice had taken on a slightly teasing turn, before he paused. his face smoothed out from the slight grin that had come with his words, instead looking at his friend with a bit of worry. " of course not. i know absolutely nothing about foliage, and i plan to keep it that way. any lessons having to do with plants always seemed to go... poorly. " he said, pausing, attention turning to the flowers elliot had pointed out. " i'd suggest ripping them out with you, but then people would question why we were doing such a task. "

        there was no one, save one even though she must bury those feelings beneath her garden, equally as dear to her as her family. she was the elder sister despite her youthful spirit, and so she couldn't help but keep an eye out for her younger brother even as she fluttered about the party, speaking with all she could. once the opportunity emerged, however, victoria excused herself from the group of guests and made her way over to cain, after making a quick stop at one of the dessert tables and grabbing a few of the tea cakes.        ❝  yes, i require my little brother's company.  ❞

admittedly, cain wasn't surprised that he hadn't realized it was his sister. he had perhaps still been in his head a bit. regardless, he greeted her with a happy smile. " sister. tiring of our parent's guests already? " he whispered, low enough so that only she could hear. he'd never want to jeopardize her image. their parents probably wouldn't be happy and cain wasn't entirely sure victoria wouldn't mind. " please tell me one of those is for me, i completely forgot we had set any sweets out... "

it had felt like a lifetime ago to be in the presence of those she had once been dear and near with. cain had always been a part of that deep hidden place in her heart that wouldn't be shown to anyone that was of none importance. the yearning to reunite had been undeniable from the moment she had caught sight of him. perhaps he had long forgotten her, even when they had been in contact throughout it all. as always she would act rash and without proper manner, closing the distance between them in a way a woman shouldn't. " there are a thing or two i have on the top of my mind. "

cain froze, stunned. he hadn't bothered to look over the invitations that had been sent out, preferring to mingle with whoever actually ended up there, but... he hadn't been expecting to see her again so soon. he had hoped but... he quickly rearranged his face into a look of genuine excitement. " cressdia. hi. i- i hadn't expected to see you. not that i'm opposed to it, but- ah. what can i help you with, my lady? " cain grinned at her. honestly, anyone in the vicinity could see he was ecstatic.

usually cain was fully embracing such an event, but he hadn't had a deep, or at least meaningful conversation with his mother in quite a while. he was just feeling... off, perhaps. regardless, he would try to show everyone that everything was fine and he was his normal, optimistic and incredibly friendly self. he couldn't afford not to, honestly. maybe at anyone else's party, but he was at his own family's party. there was no way he could mess this up. cain, for a moment, didn't notice that someone had come close to him. well, this was a perfect opportunity, wasn't it? " hello, is there anything i can help you with? "

        there was no sign of trepidation, despite it seemingly consuming the entire city as the season commenced, upon the lady lockhart's bright expression as she descended the stairs. she'd been utterly delighted when her father had informed them of his intentions to host the season's first event, and as the guests filled the mansion, victoria happily fell into the role of hostess. doe eyes surveyed the crowd. upon spotting someone off on their own, she approached with a warm smile.        ❝  welcome to lockhart mansion. can i help you find something?  ❞

" ah, no, that's alright. thank you, though. cain's shown me enough that i know my way around... " kara started, before she realized just who she was speaking to. " lady lockhart. " kara greeted as she dipped into a curtsey fitting for the other and no lower. it wouldn't do for her to seem desperate like some of the other attendees. she refused to be like them. absolutely vile, though she respected the obvious vies for power. perhaps they shouldn't be so obvious in their intentions, however. " how are you, lady lockhart? " kara asked, seeming genuinely curious. kara already liked her better than her younger brother at the very least.

this was... such a chore. nevertheless, kara held her ground in the ballroom, offering a polite but miniscule smile to anyone that passed her. luckily she hadn't encountered anyone who seemed eager to speak with her, so she had counted it as a small blessing. she wasn't thrilled to be here, but she would perform her duty as best she could. still, she just hoped the youngest lockhart wouldn't approach her, but she hadn't seen him, not once. it was a bit surprising, considering she was at his estate and it was his family's party. oh well, she wasn't going to question it. unfortunately, her luck seemed to be running out. she could already see someone looking at her. kara just prayed they wouldn't approach.
