The Dragón’s Lair

Everyone on Nova was either asleep by now or gathered for a night of drunken card games and loud joke-making. He thought so, anyway. Despite the amount of space he took up, few noticed when El Dragón slipped away to the room he occupied. After the Heliophage everyone aboard the ship was preoccupied with celebration and preparation to go their separate ways, but the former wrestler was preoccupied with work of his own. It was a guilty pleasure, to say the least, and fighting the Varelsi had taken valuable time away from his hobby, it was nice to be able to pick it all up again. He sat in a too-small chair at a desk, hunched over the brightly coloured mask laid out before him. He wasted no time laying out his materials, laughing quietly to himself at the wide array of glittering gems he pulled from the drawers. He glanced again at the door, double checking that he had closed it tightly; there was no need to endanger what dignity he had left over some rhinestones.

“Do you think he’s in here? I don’t know where else he might have gone.” Phoebe’s shrill voice sounded close to his door, accompanied by the familiar hum of LLC technology.

“Well I really hope he hasn’t died in there; I was going to give him his arms back for Company Holiday 17.” The sound of ISIC’s voice ground his gears, but Dragón had more pressing matters to deal with, primarily, securing his privacy. Inhaling deeply, the giant of a man did his best impression of a snore. It had a textbook rumble and he even inserted a snort for added authenticity, all while clutching the partially bedazzled mask to his chest. It was hard to hear over the sound of his own snoring, but he was able to make out Phoebe’s surprise at the wrestler already being asleep. It was followed, of course, by another callous remark from the Magnus before the two of them retreated.

The snoring ended abruptly once El Dragón was confident he’d been left alone, and all at once he turned back to his work. It had been a struggle at first to handle each individual rhinestone in his massive hands, but with hours of practice he’d developed a system to load the bedazzling gun that involved carefully holding stones between his lips and dropping them one by one into the reservoir of the gun. He had the pattern all planned out already: the symbol of the Battleborn to appear in fantastic bedazzled lines on the forehead of the mask. He would wear it with pride, say it was from a fan if anyone asked, and discretely offer up his “fan’s” services for anyone else who wanted to add some sparkle in their life. His work was effortless, punching each stone into the fabric with a play by play commentary of his own. When he was done he held it at arm’s length to get a good look at his work, grinning from ear to ear.

“Another excellent show by El Dragón! How does he do it? A true artist and a true champion. Sensational!” He laughed—louder than he’d meant to, and froze. Light from the hall accompanied the smooth opening of his door, revealing several of his cohorts, prepared to engage him in conversation but rendered speechless by the sight.

It was Phoebe who spoke first. “Um… Perhaps we should return at a more appropriate time?”

Although he couldn’t see him, Pendles’ voice was clear as a bell beside the heiress. “Ay, mate, are those rhinestones? This is good blackmail material, heh, I gotta get a picture.” The masks he always wore came in handy for once, neatly hiding the fact that he had turned several shades of red. His arms were still outstretched, holding the bedazzled mask at eye level. He stuttered out a few unintelligible syllables, slowly lowering his hands onto the desk. And as if things weren’t already bad enough, the stupidly cheery voice of the Magnus just had to get in his quip.

“Gee, fella, I think that’s just spectacular! Do you think you could bedazzle my arms? And by my arms I mean your arms, I’ve had them on the ship this whole time!” There was a long silence filled with stares and blinks, everyone waiting for someone else to break the tension. The wrestler’s fingers twitched, tugging at the fabric of his new mask. He could hear the skeptical looks and raised eyebrows, could feel their need for something to reconcile the strange sight before them. Clearing his throat aggressively, he searched for the courage to speak up finally. He chuckled lamely.

“Uhhh eh heh. Heh. I can explain…?”
