Reliving the Incident
David(Solid Snake), having finished the mission at Shadow Moses Island, has decided to go back to his quiet life in Alaska... but can it really be so quiet when gunfire and screams haunt you every night?
We’re not tools of the government, or anyone else.
Those words echoed in his head.
Fighting was the only thing... the only thing I was good at.
No matter how many times he tried to get it out of his head, he couldn’t forget that day.
But... at least I always fought for what I believed in.
Standing outside of his house late at night, David, formerly known as Solid Snake, was quietly smoking a cigarette. It was well into the night, at about 3:50 in the morning. The wind was a cool, gentle breeze, not quite enough to put out his cigarette though. His dogs were all sleeping quietly in the house, save for one rather large Husky that had noticed him heading outside, tagging along.
What are you fighting for!?
What WAS he fighting for? Did he ever have a reason? Probably not. Maybe it was to defend his country. Maybe it was for selfish reasons. He didn’t know. And yet...
If we make it through this, I’ll tell you!
He sighed, shaking his head. Why did he ever let himself get wrapped up in any of this? Why couldn’t he just have been a normal man in Alaska who races Sled Dogs? Sitting down on the stairs of his porch, his Husky laid as his feet, snuggling up to him. This made him smile a little, but it was short lived. Another phrase had stuck with him, one that seemed to describe him pretty well...
From the moment we're thrown into this world, we're fated to bring each other nothing but pain and misery.
He hated it. He hated how many lives he had taken, how many people he had seen die... he claims he’s used to it, but every time he closes his eyes, there’s one... and another... and it never ends. He hadn’t even been able to sleep the past few nights, even having shot off a few tranquilizer rounds in the past few weeks, waking up his dogs in the middle of the night.
He just wanted all of this to end... but could it truly ever end?
The path you walk on has no end. Each step you take is paved with the corpses of your enemies. Their souls will haunt you forever. You shall have no peace.
He had his doubts... but he wanted to enjoy his peace as long as he could. Sadly though, his cigarette was just about finished. Taking one last drag, he blows the smoke into the air and extinguishes the lit cigarette in the dirt. Standing and whistling to his dog, the two then head inside.
You mustn't allow yourself to be chained to fate, to be ruled by your genes. Human beings can choose the kind of life that they want to live. What's important is that you choose life... and then live.
And damn did he pray she was right. He had no intent on dying any time soon.
