Shin Soukoku Week 2020

We are back again this year, with the 4th Shin Soukoku Week running from April 20-26, 2020! For our fourth year, we decided to try something new, which is to host a BINGO event!

So how does this work?

Each day, you can pick a prompt from one of the grids. Like in the previous years, feel free to interpret the prompt however you wish. The same goes for the tile/box with images instead of the traditional text prompt.

Any 2 prompts can be combined for one entry.

Entries can be fanarts, fanfics, cosplays, videos, and any other multimedia work.

When submitting, make sure to format your post like so:

Title, if applicable Day [x] entry Prompt/s used: (For example, B1, I2, N3, G4, O5, etc)

While we encourage everyone to participate in their own way, completing a BINGO is our challenge to participants! To complete a BINGO, a participant must cross out a line of tile/boxes with any of the following patterns: vertical, horizontal, and diagonal.

What’s your favorite part of/about ao3?

I honestly couldn’t pick just one thing. 

I love the fact that it exists. That a group of people saw a problem that needed solving and did so much work to create an absolute miracle and that even more people have joined in to continue that work and keep that miracle going.

I love that there are over 5 and a half million works in dozens of languages and that I could spend the rest of my life looking at each and every one and not come anywhere close to seeing them all. 

I love that there aren’t any ads and no one’s collecting my data and I don’t have to give them my real name. 

I love that I can write anything I want and share it with anyone who wants to read it. 

I love that I don’t have to read anything I don’t want to because there are warnings and tags and summaries that tell me what’s in a work before I even click into it. 

I love that I don’t have to worry about what happens to my works after I die because the Archive thinks of everything and there’s a system in place for naming your “next of kin” to take care of your fanworks after you’re gone. 

I love that I can leave comments that are longer than some of my fics if I want to.

I love that I can use reaction gifs and emojis when I’m totally unable to words.

I love that I can kudos people to give them a little bit of extra love in their life. 

I love that I can search for exactly the ship and trope and work length I want and I can make damn sure my NoTP is nowhere in sight while I do it. 

I love that I can bring my old works over from other sites and backdate them so that I always have a record of that thing I wrote back in 2007 - even if I haven’t thought of that fandom in a decade. 

I love that there aren’t any algorithms controlling what I see or where my fic ends up on a list. 

I love that I can see works in a tag in chronological order. Or just completed works. Or just crossovers.

I love the way a community can come together in the comments of a fic. How readers can reply to each other, how the author can squee along with everyone else. 

I love the fact that I met my best friend because we loved each other’s fics so much.

I love how the site is improving all the time. How they’re never satisfied with how it is when they know how it could be. 

And most of all, I love each and every volunteer who has ever given their time and their skills to the Archive to make the whole damn thing work the way it does.

all of this. one of my favorite parts of AO3 is the search function. it allows me to be really specific about what I’m looking for when I can’t remember the name or author of a fic I read.  and the tags help so much! on other sites, there is usually only a spot to put the genre of a fic, but genres alone contain such a wide spectrum of topics. having the tags to add specific tropes, triggers, squicks, and other additional info that the summary doesn’t cover is incredibly helpful. because when there isn’t a place to put those things, they often aren’t included in the summary box or even the author’s notes at the beginning of the story. and that makes it more difficult for me to decide if I want to read the story or not. I like knowing what I’m getting into before I open the fic.

Hey there! So I'm working on a story (fanfiction) but the plot is an idea that has already been used a few times. Not to the point that its been overused, but its definitely been seen before by most of the fandom. Do you have any advice on how to make my story stand out?

Subverting Common Fanfiction AUs and Plot Ideas

First of all, you should know that your story doesn’t have to stand out for it to be amazing!

Write what makes you happy, not what other people tell you to write. If you want to write a story that has all the tropes, totally do it if it’s what you want!

If you want it to be different, however, I suggest you write down all of the different elements of that trope and then change one aspect of it. 

What is the usual setting of the plot? What is the usual dilemma? How do the characters usually act?

Take one or more of those and completely change it up!

Coffee shop/bakery AU? 

Situational twist: The shop is a front for the mafia. 

Setting twist: The shop isn’t in a small town, but rather in a city with a rich culture like Paris, Venice, Tokyo, etc.

Genre twist: The shop is under investigation for a string of deaths connected to regular customers.

Character twist: It isn’t the barista/baker they fall in love with, but rather the person who mops the floors and cleans tables.

High School/College AU? 

Situational twist: They’re both disguised as students because they both wanted to investigate something. Neither one knows the other isn’t actually a student.

Setting twist: The school isn’t actually a normal school. It’s one of those academies where classic classroom settings are replaced with nature-oriented, hands-on lessons. 

Genre twist: The school is the first school to be opened on Mars.

Character twist: They’re not students. They’re janitors/secretaries

Hitman AU? 

Situational twist: They were hitmen hired to kill each other

Setting twist: It takes place in a sleepy town in the countryside, not in a big city. This, of course, is an issue: the town isn’t big enough for TWO hitmen for hire.

Genre twist: They’re in the Middle Ages

Character twist: The “hitmen” don’t actually kill people, just humiliate them or prank them in such a way that they skip town.

Royalty/Arranged Marriage AU? 

Situational twist: They aren’t the ones with the arranged marriage, but their friends/siblings are. They team up to try to ruin the wedding/stop the marriage.

Setting twist: It’s the modern day and the “royalty” has been reduced to worthless public figures. The “arranged marriage” isn’t to solidify political ties at all, but rather to gain publicity.

Genre twist: The “royalty” in question are actually rich families during the Gilded Age.

Character twist: One of the characters is asexual. They and the partner they have an arranged marriage with have to try to fake a pregnancy until they figure out something about the heir situation.

Pornstar/Stripper/Sex work AU? 

Situational twist: The pornstar/stripper/sex worker actually loves their job and has become rich off of it, much to the shock of their partner

Setting twist: It takes place in the forest/remote area. Seems like a weird place for business, right?

Genre twist: It takes place on a space outpost

Character twist: One of them is a secret agent on the side.

Wild West AU? 

Situational twist: There actually really isn’t much crime going around. As two sheriffs out of a job, they decide to MAKE some crime.

Setting twist: It takes place in the Rocky Mountains rather than in the typical desert “West.”

Genre twist: A murder mystery!

Character twist: Neither of them are sheriffs or bandits or outlaws. They run an outpost/tavern that sells gear/food to people heading for the gold rush.

Magic AU? 

Situational twist: Both of them act like they’re better magicians than they actually are and peer pressure each other into doing spells that neither of them really have much of a grasp on.

Setting twist: It takes place in a super cold place. Alaska, Russia, Antarctica, the North Pole, Canada– you name it.

Genre twist: The “magic” is actually highly developed science

Character twist: They themselves aren’t magicians, but their roommates are and they both get dragged to a seance gone wrong.

Historical AU? 

 Try an era other than Classical empires, the Victorian Era, and modern wars (I.e. World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, etc.)

The series has ended, but the fandom’s passion for these two has not. Hidekane Week is alive and well, running for its 6th year in a row. Can you believe that??? 6 years?????? 2019 Update

Hello fellow Hidekane peeps…it’s been too long. A few anons have been asking about the status of this week event, so it’s time for an update.

To get started, the blog is now run by only one very busy person (Mod Cat). A lot of unfortunate life events have happened since last year, and because of them I’ve had to drop the special announcement—plans for a Hidekane Week Fanzine. This is in limbo right now, but if the interest is out there, I’ll consider it for 2020 or beyond.

For right now, though, I’d like to get some honest feedback:

This event has been going on since 2014, and I’ve enjoyed it every year, but the fandom has gotten quieter and a lot of us have either moved on or become too busy (to get candid here, I’m a full time art director, so these endeavors get more and more time consuming each year) … … But if the passion is there, if the love for Hidekane lives on, I’ll run it for at least one more year.

!! This app is a studyblr must!! It’s another productivity-timing app, but it has all the features I’ve been looking for: 1. Like Forest for android or FocusNow or iPhone, it’s an app that prevents you from playing with your phone while you study…….. Except here’s the thing: the counter only goes when the phone is facing down so it removes all temptations of even lifting up your phone

2. Themes: this app has the feature called themes, so you can measure how much time was spent on each activity. the theme is also 100% customizable. I set each theme as the name of the course I’m taking this semester so I can see if I’m lagging behind on any of the subjects

3. Weekly goals: need to spend about 20 hours on physics this week? You can se the weekly goal on the settings (again, by theme).

I’ve just been introduced to this and I already love it! The name is “Focus Timer: beyond pomodoro” and it’s on the AppStore! I’m not sure about the playstore though. But for my friends who use an iPhone or iPad, this is such a great app!

I’m sure we all know how tricky time management and productivity can be, and also how crucial it is to be good at it, to succeed. So, I’d like to share a strategy of effectively managing all of those tasks you have at hand! 

Introducing Dwight Eisenhower, 34th president of the United States. He lived a super productive life, and during his presidency he implemented many transformational programs including NASA and the Atomic Energy act. Before then, he was a 5 star general in the US army, serving as the supreme commander, he was also the president of Columbia University… I could go on. 

My point is, he did all of this while still having time for personal interests and hobbies like painting and golfing. He was amazing at time management, and his most famous method of handling tasks, is called the Eisenhower Matrix. 

It’s a method of prioritising and sorting out your to-dos based on urgency and importance.  

It is super helpful is making us question what is important and actually necessary to do. I think that we often fill up our time with tasks that do not help us in reaching our core goals, and this method helps us narrow down our todos, saving us from wasting time, energy, and resources.

The 2nd and 3rd quadrant (not urgent important, urgent-not important) is what really minimises our productivity, if not properly managed and scheduled

I personally think its a fairly good way of understanding all that you have to do, what you should do first, and how you can deal with the rest. You don’t have to necessarily plan everything out this way, but its a good mindset to adopt when managing your workload. 

I’m so so awful at being concise (I’m so sorry for the long post!!) But I help this has helped you guys. Hopefully I’m going to post a printable of the matrix in the near future, so keep an eye out for that :)

So, what is Friday Night Fights?

Friday Night Fights is a friendly writing event, in which participants all respond to a writing prompt chosen on Monday, and reveal these stories to one another on Friday night. It began as a joking “competition” between a friend and I, continued to grow with many of our friends, and fizzled away as we all got busy. I’m hoping to revive it on a grander scale to include all of you!

How does it work?

Each Monday, I will announce the prompt for the week; it may be a recycled prompt or a new one, depending on how I’m feeling.

You can chop up and alter the prompts as you wish

You can write original or fan fiction

You can make it as short or as long as you’d like! (But, of course, be polite and use a read-more if it’s getting long!)

Post your finished story on Friday night of that week, and tag me!

Please use the tag #friday night fights and/or #fnf fill so I can better see your works! (My notes get very messy and busy, so this is another good way for me to see it!)

Please do not tag other participants who haven’t expressly asked to be tagged in your works! (I don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable; some people just like to put out their work and not read others, or just a select few)

Please be kind to one another! This is all just for fun!

So, what do we win?

A sense of fun, community, and camaraderie! It’s not really a competition, but rather just a fun event I like to call a competition to make it sound a bit more ~intense~ I’ll be reblogging and reading as many stories as I can (but, given that I am incredibly busy this semester with work and school, I can’t guarantee I’ll get to everyone or participate myself each week) so however that may be an incentive? Again, it really is for fun!

about the whole “just write” advice

Maybe I’m not the best person around to go rant over it since I still have a long way to go, but I’m already so far from where I started, so I guess I can share with you this little piece of advice, after 11 years writing fanfic (in my language and in English) and trying to write my own original stuff.

You will see a lot of people telling you that the best tip to write is writing, and they are mostly right. Writing, like any other skill, must be polished, trained, and you will only get better if you try to write as much as you can. But I also realize that this is not a really useful advice if you are just starting, or if you are insecure about your writing (spoiler alert: all writers are insecure, so don’t let it get you down). Let me try to break down the whole “just write” advice for you.

1) Start small, and don’t let that frustrate you. Of course you want to write a full multichapter fic with 100k words that will get you hundreds of kudos and comments - we all want to. But if you are struggling with writing, the best advice I can give you is start small. Do you have an idea for a very specific scene you would like to write, but you don’t have the time/patience/emotional investment to write the whole plot that leads to that? No worries, write just that one part and be happy with the result. Get started by getting used to writing the things you are imagining.

2) Don’t let your wips haunt you. You wrote that one specific scene you had in mind but you just don’t feel like writing more about it? It’s ok. Believe me, every successful author has his own wip folder full of discarded ideas.  The point here is getting used to writing, to find your own style that makes you comfortable. Your wips are here to help you, not to haunt you at night.

3) Read. A lot. Like, a lot. Reading will help you to acquire vocabulary, and once again, your own style. I’m not telling you to copy other people’s works, but if you find something that makes you think “Man, I wish I could write just like this” you will have a better notion about what kind of writing you want to archive.

4) Do some research. This is especially useful if you are trying to write in another language - probably English, considering that most of the fandoms are more active in that language. Search for things like “corporal language” or “how to describe sitting positions.” Really. You are not going to magically improve if you just keep writing exactly the same thing, in the same way, forever. Try new things, new genres, explore your possibilities.

5) Get involved with the fandom. I know this is particularly scary for you if you’re shy or introvert or if your fandom is in the middle of a shipping war or something ridiculous like that. But I promise you, there’s probably a lot of good people willing to help you to improve if you ask for some input or advice. Don’t be shy about it, everyone has to start somewhere and wanting to learn shouldn’t embarrass you. It’s difficult to go alone sometimes, so take a friend with you.

6) Don’t let the numbers get you down. Don’t measure your talent by the number of kudos or comments. I know this is a piece of very trick advice, because motivation and validation go hand in hand, but honestly, sometimes we just have to be positive. You need to question yourself: are you happy with what you wrote? If the answer is yes, then congratulations, you are already improving. Don’t forget that people sometimes are just lazy and they don’t leave kudos and comments because they just don’t, even if they liked it.  7) Don’t measure yourself by other authors. Maybe there’s this one author who you admire, that only have one fic that is a piece of art and has thousands of kudos and comments, and you ask yourself how can they do it? Well, you don’t know, and I also don’t know. Maybe they are just unnaturally good and wrote that on a whim and things turned out great. Or maybe they just put A LOT of effort into it, effort that you can’t even imagine. You don’t know about that person’s wips, or how many old, abandoned accounts with their first fics they have. You don’t know about their writing process, so don’t get hung up on that.

8) Try to go back to your wips. Yes, I know I told you it’s ok to abandon an idea if you don’t feel like writing it anymore. But, if you are already comfortably popping out ideas, then the next step is working on them. Try to write about what lead to that scene, or it’s consequences. Try to write that scene from another character’s point of view. Just try to add something else. It’s not a race, you can take your time thinking about it and maybe more ideas will come to you.

9) Make a plan for your plot points. You don’t need to have the whole fic figured out, but if you know at least how you want it to end, start imagining what should happen to your characters go from point A to point B. And if you change your mind later and decided that you have a better idea for the final, that’s great. That means you know your characters and your universe better than when you started.

10) Write. But it’s hard…! Yes, it’s. That’s why you did your research, why you read, why you talked to other people about it: to make it less hard. Now you need to find what works for you: is it listening to music? doing sprints with bots on discord? writing one line at the time between your gameplays? It doesn’t matter. What works for you, works for you, but the best advice I can give you now is: try to write a bit every day. Punch your fears and your writing block on the face, lose your fear of writing and don’t give up.

11) Don’t get attached. What? Yep, and there are two instances for this one. First, if you finished your fic, and you’re proud of it, now let it go. Post it. Don’t keep re writing and changing it until you don’t even know what you are doing anymore. Done is better than perfect for you right now. Post it, and when you receive some criticism, let go again and learn how to deal with it. If it’s just a troll that doesn’t like your ship - because those people exist, don’t let them intimidate you - then you can just ignore them. But if you get some constructive review, considered it, and don’t freak out. Maybe you don’t agree with what they are saying and that’s fine, at the end of the day you are the person who knows your story the most. But if someone is truly trying to help you to improve, let them help you.

Finally, my personal experience: I wrote in Portuguese for ten years, I got a lot better, and then I gave up for a number of reasons. I took a break and that was good, but I couldn’t simply give up, so I came back and now I’m improving my English and writing skills a lot. If you really want to write, put some effort into it. Maybe you will surprise yourself. I know I did.
