Old Golf Stories
Golfers From Other Sports 1917
Fore!
That a good baseball player may also be a good golfer is being proven with increasing frequency as more and more baseball players succumb to the lure of the ancient and honorable golf game in their leisure hours.
Some excellent golfers have been recruited from the ranks of the stars of the diamond, and many others are in the process of development, for it takes time to develop a golfer.
Two names stand out when golfing ball players are mentioned. One is the veteran John Montgomery Ward, manager of the Giants more than a score of years ago, and the other is Arthur Shafor, who played with the McGraw machine only a few years ago. Both men are amateur golfers, having been formally reinstated by the United States Golf association after having given proof that they had permanently forsaken the ranks of professional sport and swearing they did not intend to return to it at any time in the future.
Both are good golfers, and a meeting between them would prove an interesting struggle.
Ward generally disposes of several of the younger stars in each tournament he enters. Shafor is now a member of the California club and is rated at 5 on the national handicap list. He has been a prominent figure in all of the recent coast tournaments.
Everyone knows that Christy Mathewson plays golf and does pretty well at the game, although he is far from being in the class of Ward and Shafor. Chief Bender is absent in Matty's class. He is said to be extremely erratic, playing a strong game one day and a wretched one the next. Among the managers John McGraw, Connie Mack and Hughie Jennings are enthusiastic golfers, and it is being planned to lure Charles Comlskey into the ranks this year. Two great ball players who play golf as they bat — left handed — are Tyrus Cobb and Eddie Collins.
A King's Hole In One
How King George, when golfing some years ago holed out in one — into a cow’s ear - is disclosed by Sir Theodore Andrea Cook, editor of Field, in a new book published in London.
He relates that some time ago he published in Field the following story: “A distinguished golfer in Scotland who had just played his approach shot was distressed to see his ball hit a cow. He walked up, but the hall was nowhere to he seen. Shaking her head more in sorrow than in anger, the offended quadruped moved forward and then dropped the sphere upon the green out of her left ear."
The story at the time was received with derision, and now Sir Theodore, in his book, reveals the identity of the distinguished golfer.

“What Are Forged Irons The better you play the more you begin to think about the differences in your clubs and what will either improve your game more, or what clubs you can now use because you yourself are a better golfer. The first thing advancing golfers usually think about as their handicap lowers is a better iron. That thought naturally progresses to forged irons. In the beginning all irons were forged irons. They started with a piece of metal, usually a carbon steel that is soft enough to be pliable, that was roughly shaped into a club head and then pounded out into the exact shape desired. In the past all forged irons were ‘tour’ irons, or muscle backs but as technology advanced and the abilities to create more complex irons came along there are all kinds of forged irons now including cavity backs. Today’s forged irons are still created in roughly the same manner as they were in the past. A block of metal is compressed under extreme pressure into the rough shape of the desired head. Once the head is in its general form it is sent to the mill where it is heated and pounded into exact specifications. Final touches are then ground or bored into the head to add cavity backs, weights, or bars as well as groves in the face to enhance striking performance.”
Some Golf Playing Tips
While golf is a fairly simple game in concept, the reality is that it requires much more thought than simply getting the little white ball into the hole. In order to have success on the course, it takes a combination of physical ability, mental acuity, and patience. The tips and techniques in the following paragraphs can help you up your game.
Doing this will aid you in learning what stance is a good fit for you. Proper stance is essential, but it is not the same for everyone. Perfecting your stance is the first step to improving your overall game.
Walk and don't rent a golf cart. Walking the course will also help you become more familiar with the grounds and help you with your shots. Walking can help keep your muscles warm and loose.
Your body itself can serve as a golf trainer. The power of your swing is created through the use of your entire body. The force of your whole body should be used to swing the club. This allows you to increase your distance without placing unnecessary strain on your arms.
Use your body for more power behind your swing. Do not fall into the trap of many beginning golfers and assume that arm strength is all that is needed. You will be more effective if you use your entire body.
Hold your golf clubs with neutral grips. If your shots tend to veer off on the right, you might be holding your club too tightly. And if you hold it too loosely, the club will send the ball left. If you have the right grip, you can control the direction your ball will go in.
A proper grip is the first thing to learn. Put your hands palm-down around the club handle. Your thumbs should point towards the ground. Your hands should be touching. For a longer drive, hold the handle a but higher up.
Don't get in the habit of hitting from a posture that strains your balance. One easy way to correct your stance is to practice your stance without a club. Assume a posture where you are bent a little forward at waist and knees. See if your arms are in a good position to swing the club. Clap your hands together, as if around a club. These elements make a natural golf position. Any discomfort you feel in this stance is the result of overcompensation.
Despite what a lot of folks will tell you, keep a consistent position for all your shots. Using the same position may make it easier for you to shoot consistently. When you want to give more room for loft with your clubs, try putting your back foot closer to the lead and boost your loft while maintaining ball position. This lets you always pick the right club.
Keep your confidence high by playing with other players at your level. When you are new to golf, choose courses that are easy and play with others who are just beginning. You do not have to go out and be embarrassed because you are a newbie playing on a new course.
Always make sure your feet are in the proper position. Here is one way to test whether or not you are standing in the proper position: Without moving either foot, attempt to tap all of your does repeatedly. If your stance is good, you'll be able to move the toes without much effort. If you're having a lot of trouble tapping your toes, you're probably leaning too far over the ball. Conversely, if it's extremely easy to tap your toes, you're most likely leaning too far back from the ball.
One way to keep your motivation about golf is to simply make the game as fun as you can. Always practice, and ask for advice and tips from more experienced golfers, and your game will improve dramatically.
Maximize your ability to strike the ball forcefully by learning not to draw your club back too far on your backswing. Pulling back too far will ruin your posture and cause you to hit the ball incorrectly or even swing right past it entirely.
Keeping your eye on the ball may be an old adage, but it will always remain the most basic of concepts. This adage is most popular with baseball, but is just as important in golf. Have your head down and your eyes glued to your ball when you swing.
Remember that your feet are going to expand after a day spent walking on a course. Therefore, choose a pair of golf shoes large enough for this expansion. If you buy a pair of golf shoes that perfectly fit inside the store, you might really regret the discomfort you can have near the eighteenth hole.
If the time to practice your golf is limited, focus on improving your short game. Work on your chipping and putting abilities. Practice these skills, and you will soon start to notice an improvement on the green. If you aren't as starved for time, then do a bit of sand wedge practice, then switch to your 7-iron for some mid-range shots, then head back to the sand trap for more short-range shots.
Try to pay attention while you golf. You should be ready to play as soon as it's your turn. When you are not prepared, it slows everything up because there are golfers behind you that cannot play the hole until you have hit your shot.
As strange as it may sound, a game of mini golf can help you improve your real golf game. The obstacles in miniature golf games can help you practice your putting skills. You also learn discipline as you learn how to overcome small obstacles like windmills or small hills, which can help you understand how to adapt to new environments and greens when you're playing a game of real golf.
Everyone can enjoy golf, but only the serious players will place importance in perfecting their swing whenever they get the chance. Stuff a copy of this article into your golf bag, and consult it on the course to improve your game quickly and efficiently.

When I Played Golf Lyrics
When I played golf I learned to eat Some things I dared not eat before. I learned another tongue complete, I learned to lie about my score. When I played golf I learned to flirt— An opportunity most rare— And as I cameo-ed the dirt I picturesquely learned to swear. When I played golf I learned to steal The balls the other players lost. I learned to spend my all and feel ’Twas wrong to stop and count the cost. When I played golf my great concern Was this:—I say it to my shame— The only thing I did not learn Was how to play the cussed game.
