The following article first appeared in The National Book Review:
Lili Wright's debut novel, Dancing With the Tiger, is a thriller that centers on a battle over Montezuma's funereal mask. The characters include a daughter of a disgraced art collector, a sadistic American expatriate art collector, and a murderous local drug lord -- all of whom will do a great deal to get their hands on the mask. Wright talked with The National's Eileen Hershenov about thriller plotting, creating male and female characters, and writers who put their friends in their work.
Q: You're a non-Mexican writing about Mexico. How did you get your information and what special sensitivities were involved writing about a culture from the outside? And were you particularly sensitive since the story deals with a large class divide: the relatively privileged American expatriate characters and the Mexicans who (largely) serve them?
As I'm not Mexican, I decided to focus the story on expatriates. This is a world I know. I have twice spent a year living in Mexico: once in San Miguel de Allende and once in Oaxaca. On three other occasions, I lived with Mexican families for a month or so--in Guadalajara, Cuernavaca and...

shade at Bieber, noted Radio.com.
The feud heated up earlier this year when Charlie swore on stage about the Biebs.
“F— you Justin Bieber!” screamed Puth.
Now, in the latest part of the ongoing Charlie versus Justin war, Puth is taking time to diss the “Sorry” singer once more. Only this time, the battle is being fought on the social media front.
It began when Bieber headed to Instagram to serve up words of wisdom on writing songs.
“If u write music take notes from the greatest writer to ever do it Jason Boyd aka Poo bear,” recommended Justin.
Bieber seemed motivated only to show his appreciation for his Purpose music collaborator. But something struck the wrong chord with Charlie, because Puth then turned to Twitter to disagree, making a point of beginning his message in a way that mimicked Justin’s Instagram post.
“If you write music…write from the heart. You don’t take notes, you hear...

The rapper calls the DJ's skills into question at his Summer Sixteen tour after-party
If the feud between Drake and Hot 97 is a flame, the rapper just did the verbal equivalent of grabbing a whole jug of gasoline and dousing the growing blaze.
Fast-forward to August 6: Drake's still headlining the Garden, and Funkmaster Flex threw himself into the fray. He started by making fun of Drake's fan base ("70% of your fans wear high heels, the other 30% are guys who wear sandals" — if that counts as a diss, even?), and pushing all the hot buttons that came up in the Meek Mill vs. Drake skirmish, specifically accusing him of using ghostwriters.
"If you have help on your music, and on your bars, to compete for the top ... it's an issue," he said. "You wanted people to think that you write your bars. You wanted people to think that on that BlackBerry those [words] were yours, and that you wrote that. I see through you. And that’s why you so angry."
At the Summer Sixteen tour's after-party later that night, Drake, clearly agitated, addressed the crowd and called Flex out directly.
Drake showed love for NYC's hip-hop...

The Riverwest Neighborhood Association (RNA) released the winner of its neighborhood sign redesign competition at Center Street Daze on Saturday, Aug. 6 at 11:30 a.m. before the Cart Races began. The final three designs were submitted by David Arnevik, Helene Feider and Allison Waller, but it was ultimately David Arnevik's "House on the river" design that was deemed best by Riverwest residents.
Left to right: 1) "House on the river" by David Arnevik. 2) "Bicycle and tree" by Helene Feider. 3) "Riverwest Coop" by Allison Waller
Not every neighborhood sign follows these loose trends, and that's fine (some of the posters are more iconic and inspiring than others), but I do appreciate the sense of unity it brings to the city.
So what was wrong with the current Riverwest neighborhood sign? According to Ruth Weill, writing in the Riverwest Currents, the Riverwest Neighborhood Association felt it was dated and due for an update.
"Many residents felt Riverwest needed a new image that better reflected the neighborhood. A new sign had been a topic at community meetings for a few years now," wrote Weill.
After asking residents to rank specific themes, the RNA put out a Request for Proposals (RFP) to artists for new...
