What is an X-Ray?

Basic Principle

X-Ray beam passed through the body where a portion of the X-rays are either absorbed or scattered by the internal structures and the remaining X-ray pattern is transmitted to a detector which is then recorded on a film. X-Ray imaging has evolved over the past 100 years, but the basic principle is still the same as in 1895.

Diffferences in absorption and varying exposure level of the film that creates the images which can show broken bones, clogged blood vessels and cancerous tissues (lungs).

Common Uses

Conventional X-Ray is a very powerful tool for detecting skeletal trauma like broken bones and for diagnosing gastro intestinal system (digestive tract) and for thoracic cavity including Heart and Lungs. its is most commonly used in case of all kind of fractures and Bone Pathology.

Specialized X-Ray using Contrast is done for gastro intestinal tract, kidney and Urinary system (IVP) and patency of the fallopin tube i.e. Hysterosalpingography (HSG)

Thrapeutic Radiography is used for the management of cancer treatment that is radio therapy.

Side Effects

Radiation hazard is one of the major associated problem and hence not used during pregnancy. The radiologist/ radiographer has to use protective shield and various other devices for radiation exposure.
