A. Prior to this course, I was not very active on tumblr and basically disregarded the platform. This course has somewhat attuned me to being more familiar with digital social media and has given me the motivation to keep using tumblr, even after the course is over. Additionally, our projects in garageband and imovie has made me more experienced in utilizing digital platforms which, no doubt, is a necessary skill for future life projects. The readings have made me take a new perspective on how digital media affects our lives, specifically how pervasive digital media can be and the importance of the ‘truth’.

B. One of the most prominent principles I will take away from this course is that not everything is black and white. A common theme that most of the readings share is that there is a wide spectrum when analyzing certain aspects of life such as the truth, depression, or loneliness. For example, Hilton Als uniquely challenged the distinction with race and gender in his work ‘White Girls’. These authors break conventional ways of thinking and open entirely new possibilities that can help us become more compassionate and understanding human beings. I also learned some interesting techniques when making documentaries that blew right past me before taking this course. Some examples of these techniques are the utilization of certain transitions, incorporating unique shots and intentionally withholding information at first to make the audience more interested with the work.

C. This course has certainly introduced new perspectives to me and made me think in ways I never thought of before. The basis of creative writing is to use perspectives of one’s life as tools for writing. Inspiration can come in many forms and the various documentaries and sono-essays that we have watched has certainly inspired new ways of thinking for me. To be able to creatively produce something, one has to understand the literature and techniques used within a field. By viewing the works of my classmates and of the authors of our readings such as Rankine, I can peer into their personal lives and gain a more complete understanding of reality. This course provided me with these new perspectives and ultimately strengthened my skills as a creative thinker and writer. Additionally, looking at the ways other authors use certain techniques, such as how has a profound influence on how I create my work in the future.

D. Creative writing and digital media are tools that people use to share something about their own life to others. With digital media, a child in America can now know the struggles of another child living in Nepal and vice versa. Digital media and creative writing connect us as human beings and paves the way for innovation, advancement and progress. Digital media is making brand new changes very quickly and it is up to us to try and adapt to these new changes so we can improve our lives as well as the lives of those around is. It is no surprise that the most advanced countries are ones whose citizens are more attuned with digital media and have more outlets for their creativity. The large potential that digital platforms such as tumblr gives us allows people to translate their creativity into a tangible work such as a digital painting or a documentary. These qualities are what highlights the importance of this course.

STMP no.11

The story that my documentary tells is a satire about my meme addiction. It shows my life before the addiction and shows how the meme addiction has adversely affected my life. The documentary follows my path and shows how bad my addiction is, specifically, it shows me browsing memes. The story then takes a turn and shows how I improve from my meme addiction and how a ‘doctor’ would help me out in recovering. Overall, I end the story by being cured from my meme addiction and sending a cautious message to the audience to be careful when looking at memes.

Looking back at my rough draft, I can probably introduce more effective transitions to make this story even more satirical than it already is. Many satires have sudden transitions that produce a comedic effect and I might employ this strategy within my own documentary. In addition, the trip to the Zimmerli museum inspired me to introduce more characters that will add to the satire of the documentary. These characters could be my best friend who is concerned about me and my addiction or an interview with my parents who have to live with a meme addicted son.
