The Vertical Cinema is coming to Glasgow.

I have seen the Vertical Cinema in Amsterdam before at the Sonic Acts Festival (which is a huge source of inspiration for me) in 2012 at the Stedlijk Museum. The Vertical Cinema invites a group of video artists who all work digitally to create an experimental film in a vertical format. The video works are then transferred onto cellulose film and then projected from a 35mm film projector placed on its side. It's a fairly elaborate process, placing a 35mm projector on its side, which they touch upon at the beginning of this film but it shows that there are still desired qualities of older technology, the mechanical, raw elements of light and motion creating an image are still existent and visible in a 35 mm projector and of course there will be "aesthetic" qualities that can't be gained using digital.

This short documentary by Adam Curtis popped up in Charlie Brooker's annual Wipe the Year show broadcasted by the BBC on New Years Day. I love how eloquently Curtis and Brooker for that matter portal what is actually going on with the government and with social circumstances. It's like for a moment, everything makes sense. But it does make me wonder, why are the BBC allowing such Left Wing propaganda to be broadcast? In this piece above Curtis states that what the government are trying to do is create a mass sense of confusion so that people a) don't know what the fuck is ACTUALLY going on and b) don't know what to uprise against, because we don't know what is going on. You gave weapons to Saudi Arabia? Who're now using them against us? Who's supporting who and what is this war on terror? Mission accomplished.

To which Curtis states we just say "OH DEAR" and get on with it.

Cuba's DIY Inventions from 30 Years of Isolation

In 1991, Cuba's economy began to implode. "The Special Period in the Time of Peace" was the government's euphemism for what was a culmination of 30 years worth of isolation. It began in the 60s, with engineers leaving Cuba for America. Ernesto Oroza, a designer and artist, studied the innovations

Short documentary film about the Cuban economy and how people used to use technology in innovative ways. Taking an object for example a tumble drier motor and using it is a fan or a lathe. An interesting insight into material culture, disobedient objects and the place of objects in society.

This documentary made me think about how sickening the throw away culture we live in is. "IF IT'S BROKE DON'T FIX IT, just buy a new one." It's frustrating that so many think this way and so refreshing to see people using old tech and devices in innovative ways, expanding the possibility of the device.

Trevor Jackson - DJ, artist, creative director and music producer is releasing an album called F O R M A T in 2015 where he will release a limited edition run of the albums on a variety of different formats.

in a characteristically beautiful and uncompromising way, paying homage to physically released formats over the decades and also celebrating the artistry, design and individual experience of playing music via traditional methods.

As Jackson says: “Every copy of a physical recording is different, a real object that has its own little story – a one of a kind, personalised by the effort you put in to purchase it, each time you touch it, and the unique ritual that goes along with playing it.”

I think this is a great project as it clearly portrays different devices and how the format of how we listen to music has developed over the years. I'm sure there will be some audio files out there who will be listening to the different sonic properties in all of the formats as well.

Trevor Jackson has always been really inspirational to me, he releases compilations of Vinyls of old Industrial, Electronic Body Music (EBM) Coldwave, Minimal Wave and Punk, like really unheard of rare stuff and then makes like video mixes of the compilations. He is an artist as well as a DJ and a producer.

The Vinyl Factory is a record company based in London, associated with FACT magazine who are still supporting the art and music industry for example commissioning artists to make silk screened vinyl sleeves and printing limited edition runs of records. Really supporting the artists and creating a network for people.

I am becoming increasingly interested in plants and natural growth/geometry. Through centuries we have seen humans trying to control the chaos in nature and I think this is most visible in the way we structure gardens like these botanical gardens in Italy. Firenze was one of the weirdest places I have ever been. This ties into my research into algorithms and how nature has a code and that code is connected via numbers to the software we use in computers.

Looking at the power of human beings and the algorithmic emotions that drive certain feelings - impulse, anger, frustration, rage, desperation and the sort of energies these emotions give off, the patterns. In this video these emotions are visualised with corporate slogans on top suggesting that it is these corporations, the frustration at the distribution of wealth that is in some way driving these emotions. Are these emotions in some way needed to fuel an underlying government algorithm?

3.39 seconds in is the KEY part of the film for me. It summarises all of the above.

This was made by artist Franck Vigroux who also creates AV installations. I had thought about incorporating film into my events and it is something I may still consider.

Robert Henke is an audio visual artist from Munich, Germany who builds and operates machines that create sounds, shapes and structures. He uses sound and images, field recordings, photography and light all manipulated and moderated by computational algorithms with a focus on exploring spaces both virtual and physical. Robert Henke has contributed so much to the music industry with his software development and research towards the programme Ableton Live, the most commonly used computer software for music production. It is so refreshing to discover that one of the creators of this software is also an amazing artist, engineer and a pioneer. It has been amazing for me to find out about his work now, when I can really understand and appreciate his accomplishments. I have a feeling that because Henkes body of work is so huge he is an artist who who I will reference again in the future, his work is so inspiring and relevant to what I am doing now.

Based on self written software, this work on the edge of concert and site specific installation finds previously unseen beauty and minimalistic elegance in a commonly underrated medium. High power lasers draw complex morphing shapes and connect points in space. Lumière combines precise geometric figures with floating organic structures, presenting the archaic sign language of an alien culture communicating via emerging and disappearing traces of extremely bright light.

Percussive and textural sonic events provide a counterpoint to the visual rhythm, resulting in a multi sensorial experience which at times is fragile and quiet, at others massive and overwhelming. Each Lumière performance is a unique and site specific real time exploration of synchronicity and divergence, of light and darkness at the limits of perception.

Noqturnl is an audiovisual meditation exploring collective dreamstate. The audience is invited to spend the night in the 4DSOUND system. A group of listeners are immersed in a spatial experience while they flit around the threshold between waking state and dream. Slow, pulsedriven musical constructs, vast landscapes of sound and visual patterns develop over hours as the listeners drifts in and out of sleep, blurring the boundaries between dream environment and physical space: in doing so, allowing conscious access to the vivid, intuitive imagery and sensation within the borders of dream experience.

This video is an interview with Field directors Marcus Wendt and Vera-Maria Glahn. They talk about how and why the aim to try and visualise energy flow in their work. They refer to energy flow as an invisible force or power that they are trying to make visible. They take inspiration from landscapes, human nature and animals and try to visualise energy flow using software, moving image and installation.

“‘Infinite 115’ is an exhibition experiment. In this experiment, a team of emerging artists will install their audiovisual installation “Infinite” in Avery Room 115. “115” is not only the room number but also the serial number of the experiment, which is the first attempt of a series of ongoing debugging activities that will take place in different venues. “Infinite 115” is also a spatial replacement. It replaces two seemingly structural walls and the corner they enclose in Room 115 by projecting moving, non-structural, opened geometric shapes, thus questioning the existence and the formation of the space.”

I really love this piece, it looks like an animated Sol Le Wit drawing, endless shapes, endless geometries, infinite algorithms of instructions.
