            Dallas Winston made a number of citizens in New York terrified of him.             It didn’t help that he had another hood by is side to help him pick fights,             shoplift, and whatever illegal things there are in the book. The greasers took             over the wild side of the city, dingy back alleyways now being home to them.

The Outsiders (1983)

      Sprawled out on the old, musty car seat that sat in the vacant lot the twelve year old rubbed at the fresh bruise forming on his cheek ; glory his dad sure could hit hard. 

      It was cold, colder than it should be in mid April, and Johnny's coat was riddled with holes. He had saved it from being thrown out by Steve, an old leather working jacket that he had outgrown. But it was perfect for the younger minus all the rips and tears that let the winds bite at bare forearms underneath it. And it was especially perfect for curling up in on abnormally cold spring nights when your father didn't want you in the house.

     So, there he was, nose tucked in the collar, eyes half lidded with impending unconsciousness. Until the familiar crunch of gravel came from a few feet too his left indicating that someone had entered the lot, and by the sound of it they were running. Propping himself up on an elbow Johnny witnessed a boy, a little older than he, sprinting away from the darkness of the street. And, by the looks of it, he had no intentions of turning back. 

      This unsettled Johnny and without thinking he scrambled to his feet, racing behind the blonde boy. With some effort he caught up with the other and was greeted with a set of hard, blue eyes that made the air around the two seem a little bit colder.

      " Glory, what're you runnin' from?" Johnny called over to the boy, who didn't slow his pace upon noticing the boy.

Dallas Winston could hardly stand, he could hardly light his cigarette and it was an amazing triumph that he had managed to hike all the way from Buck Merril’s to his current spot.

He had been trampled by a particularly disobedient chestnut mare, thrown into the hard dusty floor of the arena and kicked mercilessly until one of the referees had managed to get control of the reigns and lead the horse away, by them, the damage was already done. He had cracked a couple of ribs again and his pelvis was bruised, possibly broken. His while body hurt, and he couldn’t be comfortable no matter what he did.

Buck had had to scrape him off the ground and find a bed for him to lay in until he got lucid enough to make a decision about going to the hospital. Dally left the first chance he got, he didn’t know where he was expecting to go, really anywhere but Buck’s, there only so much loud Hank Williams a fella can take before it starts grinding at his sanity.

“‘M just sore, go the hell on somewhere and quit staring, Johnnycakes.”

      Instead of averting his gaze like he was asked, Johnny continued to watch Dallas stagger around. He was astounded that the elder could even keep the cigarette in hard, pressed lips without crushing the filter. And to see the gallant southern gentleman reduced to a man who looked about ready to drop dead made Johnny more uncomfortable than anything he could think of. 

      " Dally, " The younger said with caution, approaching Dallas like some wounded stray, "you ain't lookin' too hot. Lemme get you somewhere to lie down, the Curtis' maybe, or my house. My folks ain't in right now, off to visit some relative." But the look the slighter got was the exact opposite he was hoping for, a scowl. Frustrated, the boy ducked under the elder's shoulder and draped an arm around his back.

                           " My house then. "

           Head bowed in silence, eyes glued to the elder’s shoes             Johnny shakes his head at every question thrown his way.                                                         “ No, Dal. He ‘innit mean it, he                                                           was jus’ drunk an’ angry. “

      He ran his tongue over his teeth, jaw clenching as the younger attempted to explain.       Dally wasn’t about to have any more of it. And Johnny Cade better know that.

❝ ‘He ‘innit mean it, he was jus’ drunk an’ angry—-‘ Dammit, Johnny! That’s all I ever hear from ‘ya when your ol’ man gives ‘ya a beatin’! Sure as hell don’ look like a scratch to me. ❞

          Hiding behind his hands that now shielded wide eyes, the boy           had nothing to say to Dallas. He scared him when he got like            this, wild eyes flaring with something so fierce not even Johnny           would dare stoke.                                         "Dallas. It's just a scratch, it ain't nothin'                                          serious. Calm down."
