“Damar”

Oldie But Goody Assignment, 2017

The first photo is an old photo that I took of my little cousin over the summer. When I turned it in my teacher explained to me that when I do things like this I need to do something with the photo that makes it interesting to audience. So we sat together and played with photoshop a little to make the photo more interesting. First we took a texture from one photo and overlayed onto this photo. Then we took the warp tool and pulled the corner of the photo to make it look like the photo is curving in the middle. I really like this photo because it’s different and you can’t really tell what’s going on in the photo.

“Dynamic”

When walking in downtown Chicago, I asked this young lady if I could take her photo because I really liked her hair. After her portrait was taken, I noticed her hoodie and asked if I could snap a photo of that too, because I liked that it had a collection of motivational words. I put these photos together because they perfectly together, considering both photos are photos of the same person. After talking with her I also decided to pair this photo with her because she fits all the words in her hoodie.

“Pig Tails”

I decided to talk this girls photo because I liked her puff ball pig tails. When I asked if I could get her photo she got really excited and hurried to strike a pose. The mood of this photo to me displays happiness because of the girls excitement after being asked if I could take her picture.

I took this photo while in Pilsin. I like this photo better in black and white because it makes the splat over his face stand out more. This photo in black and white gives the photo more of a mystery type of feeling because we don’t know who this is a portrait of or why there is a huge splat over his face.

“Sundown”

While my boyfriend and I were walking downtown, he randomly stopped in his tracks and suggested that I take a picture of the scenery because of the sunset reflecting off the buildings. The first photo is the original photo, the second is my edit, and the third is my teachers fixes. Comparing the final photo to the original, I think the blur makes the audience focus on the buildings. I really like the third photo because it’s more vibrant and not as dark as the second photo. But, I like the second photo a little more because I was really trying to get the photo to focusing on the sunset. I thought if I made the surroundings of the photo a little darker and turned the saturation of the sunset up, the sunset would automatically grab the audiences attention. Comparing the second photo to the original I think the blur makes the audience focus on the yellow sunset beaming off the buildings which is why I love the second photo.

“The Artifact”

Chaos And Control Assignment, 2017

This is my Chaos and Control Still Life combo. The chaos of the photo is supposed to be the many different hair products in the background. I chose that to be my chaos because anyone with natural hair understands that trying to find the right products for your hair isn’t easy and it’s truly like an experiment that could go either extremely good or extremely bad. I decided to use the girl as my control because her facial expression is very calming and her hair is big and  curl which shows that through all the experimenting there will always soon be a good outcome. The chaos and control come together through the idea of controlling your hair by using chaotic products.

“Squall”

The first photo is a photo that I told at Morton Arboretum. The second photo I created the storm but using Gaussian blur and motion blur. Everything I did including the blur enhances my photo because before it was just a really boring photo of land and then the aftermath resulted in a really cool interesting photo. I’m still shocked that I even was able to do this because I don’t really photoshop my photos this much.

Artist Statement

Black Box, 2017 

I really like my black box poster because I feel like it finally gives others an understanding of my focus and explains to other why I do I decided to only shoot with African American men, women, boys, and girls. Being in the black box made me feel like I made a lot of people proud because of stating such a bold and blunt statement that can actually make some feel uncomfortable.  I made me feel really good when people came up to me and told me that my black box was really good and that my artist statement explained my whole black box heme and why.

“No Validation”

This is one of my absolute favorite photo. I love this photo because everything about it gives a very serious and powerful mood, along with the wear and tear in the photo. I chose to use this as a “color” because the photo has no other colors around it that actually pop. So, I decided to turn up the saturation and vibrancy of the orange to make it stand out more.

“Groovy”

This is my composite for the street photo assignment. What I did to make this a composite was take the model from one photo and place him in another. I had to blur the background to make the photo look as if I took it from my camera. I decided to name this photo Groovy because of the way he;s dressed and when I stopped this person to take their photo he actually asked to sing to my friends and I. He sang “Don’t” by Bryson Tiller.

“Lack Of Consent” 

Walgreen’s Expressions Challenge, 2016

When society let’s males get away with crimes, such as rape, then more males feel comfortable sexually assaulting women because they know that the consequences can be far from harsh. While creating this photo I was trying to show how comfortable some men are with sexual assault, so I made sure my male model was smiling as if there is nothing wrong within his actions. I made sure my female model was looking as vulnerable as possible by having her frown and making a droopy face. Lastly, the quote is very powerful because he’s saying it as if the women should be flattered by his “compliment.”

“This Time Wasn’t An Accident”

This photography was made for the “Walgreen’s Expression Challenge.” This is a contest for High School students to find creative ways to express themselves about some very serious topics teens are faced with. I named this photo “This Time Wasn’t An Accident” to show that there is no excuse for any kind of abuse ever.

“Smile” 

Street Photo Assignment, 2016

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this photo! While making this piece I really wanted it to give the audience a sense of joy from just looking at the photo. Seeing people in such a joyful state after asking to take their photo is such a thrill to me. While in the process of making this photo I couldn’t get the Gospel song “I Smile” by Kirk Franklin out of my head, that song actually means a lot to me because regardless of whatever hardships I’m going through, listening to that song never fails to put a smile on my face. While getting this photo graded my teacher told me that I should’ve went in a touched up the peoples faces, but I actually purposely avoided doing that to the photo because I wanted the photo to be as natural as possible! When people are looking at this photo I actually WANT them to notice any flaw that they could possible find on someone and then shortly after notice the great big smile on their face to show that their happy in their own ski, flaws and all!
