Garden House by Caspar Schols outside Eindhoven, Netherlands
Photos by Jorrit ’t Hoen:
I met Caspar last year at the orientation class of the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. He was 28 and had just quit his job at a technology firm to find out what he really wanted to do with his life. He lived with his mother and decided he would build a house for her in their garden. Without having any relevant experience in this field he designed and built a house all by himself.
Meanwhile Caspar found out what he really wants to do, he got admitted at the AA School of Architecture in London and is studying there right now.

A Thousand Yards in Beijing
Architecture studio Penda has revealed plans to create a vast network of modular building blocks at the International Horticultural Expo 2019 in Beijing, forming a 30,000-square-metre exhibition space. Penda architects Chris Precht and Dayong Sun plan to build on their experience with modular construction to create the exhibition space for Chinese property developer Vanke.
Called Thousand Yards, the structure will have a plaza at its centre, feeding a number of wide and narrow pathways. These will lead through to areas including a greenhouse, a food court, teahouses, a vegetable garden and the exhibition galleries.

Half-Tree House by Jacobschang Architecture
The remote site lacks vehicular access, piped water, and electricity, so the building was designed so that it could be constructed mostly by hand by its amateur builder-owners.
The Art of Ray Morimura
Ray Morimura is a graduate of Tokyo Gakugei University, where he studied oil painting. Originally his works were geometric-style abstractions. But later he was inspired by Shigeru Hatsuyama and Sumio Kawakami, and began to study woodblock techniques. Unlike most other Japanese woodblock printmakers, he uses oil-based inks to create these detailed images.
His technique is to carve both 6mm thick plywood blocks and 3mm thick blocks laminated with P-tile, a flooring material. The “linocut” process permits quite complex designs, which are printed on mulberry bark kozo paper. Essentially each color requires a separate block, and separate inking. Some blocks are printed with solid colors, while others include bokashi or a gradation of color. Of his work, Morimura says “printing demands total concentration as a single hair or dust can ruin a print. I usually clean my studio thoroughly and wait to begin the printing process until after midnight when it is quiet. With prints one can never be certain of the outcome until the final print is completed. There is always the unexpected, which makes it all the more intriguing. As with Zen and ink paintings, I hope something spiritual, in a contemporary sense, can be expressed in these landscape works.”
