Emmerdale:
NOVA TWINS on the cover of Upset MagazineÂ
On March 24, Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis stepped onto the golden-hued carpet to accept her honors at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood A
On the flip side of that coin, though, itâs been Black women in the entertainment business whoâve said the most injurious things to her about queerness, with no regard for her sexuality. For reasons Ellis canât quite put her finger on, people fail to recognize sheâs part of the LGBTQ community.
âThere is an assumption made of me â a presumption made of me. Is it because Iâm a Black woman from Mississippi? Is it because Iâm older?â she muses. âI donât know what the mechanics are that goes into them not processing, or them not just being able to believe that in the same way I am Black, I am queer. This is who I am.â
I want my gay rights now! - Marsha P. Johnson (NYC Pride Parade, 1973)
[ID: Gifset of black and white footage of Marsha P. Johnson being interviewed. She smiles as she speaks and is standing with two friends or supporters. She says: âDarling, I want my gay rights now! I think itâs about time the gay brothers and sisters got their rights. And especially the women.â /End ID.]
Aaliyah - âAre You That Somebodyâ (1998)
I ASSUME we're gonna fight somebody and then campaign for a pickup on a different network but, for today, I'm just going to be sad alone. Couldn't make anyone understand what it meant to have it, don't think I can make anyone understand what it means to lose it.
This post isn't about shipping, I'm just so relieved that the two queer Black women main characters are becoming allies instead of adversaries. The most important thing to Sophie is her job, the most important thing to Ryan is Angelique. This was the perfect avenue to create a divide between these women on opposite sides of a polarizing ideology on justice and policing. But they used that very avenue to bring them closer and closer. They've developed a mutual respect for one another and they trust each other and I'm so happy.
