What Auto Shows Say About Human Nature

Last November I had the pleasure of going to the San Francisco Auto Show. Bare with me, I’m well aware this is old news, however while writing this it occurred to me how thrilled I was, and still am, to be involved in the auto industry – such a marvel of technological advances that thrill for the future and today. After 30 years in the business I can honestly say I still love cars. And of course today they’re more than transportation; outside of being a sense of identity they’re also offices and homes on wheels.

And this got me thinking about how these shows affect the general public – people outside the industry who just happen to love cars – people who act emotionally based upon a post-show adrenaline rush.

Commission based pay plans are a “killer” for car buyers

No one should have anything against anyone earning a commission for selling a product. But in the car dealership environment, commission based pay plans are one of the inherit root causes for car shoppers and buyers not receiving the experience they deserve, and here is why:

In most dealerships, almost everyone involved in selling a car gets a commission based on the profit made off of the sale of the car or the products such as extended warranties or aftermarket products. So, simply put, the more profit, the more income for the sales person, sales manager, general manager, finance manager, on and on…..

Advertising

There are three levels of advertising for autos in the market place. National ads by manufacturers (tier I), regional ads by manufacturers and regional dealers (tier II), and the rest by the Dealers (tier III) basically cover all the advertising that consumers are exposed to on TV, radio, Internet, newspapers.

Tier I and most of the tier II ads are heavily scrutinized for legality and fairness. They basically promote a brand or a model within a brand (eg. Ford Mustang). Such ads hardly ever require fine prints. Tier two ads promote a regional offer such as $199 per month for XYZ car. These ads almost always come with a ton of impossible to read fine print.

Transparency

We all know that negotiating is not a bad thing as long as all parties conduct themselves with good faith. Is having sincere intention to be dealt with fairly too much to ask for from a car dealer? Looking at the state of the car industry apparently, it is.

One of the differences between good and bad faith negotiations is when pertinent information is not available to all parties. No one wants to pay more than they have to or worse more than someone else for the exact same car!

Brokers

Using a broker for arranging your car purchases is better than not having one. But unfortunately this is the problem. Most, if not all, of the brokers earn a fee from both the consumer and the dealer. They also earn nothing until a transaction is completed. There is a major flaw with this model.

For starters, the first item that gets negotiated with the dealer and the broker (who is supposed to be representing you) is the brokers fee, which is to be paid by the dealer to the broker. In essence, since the consumer already pays the broker, any possible “fat” should be passed on to the consumer.

Even The Playing Field

One of the main reasons for the car buyer’s embedded anxiety when negotiating with car dealers is the uneven playing field. Let’s face it, no one wants to pay more than they have to. The primary difference between what people ultimately end up paying is simple, their negotiating skills or lack thereof.

Car dealers are professional negotiators. They develop processes, and train and practice in them every day. This is really no different than a professional golfer who practices his craft daily. The car salesperson negotiates more in one day before noon than most consumers will in a lifetime.
