There was no acting in the way her breath had hitched, or the way that even as much as she detested him; she couldn’t help the attraction she had for him. He was like a leech sucking all coherent thought from her. In the sanctuary of their spot, Sydney was composing her thoughts. They had no idea how long this mission was to go on, or how well they had to sell their story, but one thing was becoming clear. Sydney was falling for her own story. With Vaughn out of the picture, her sex life had hit a wall. So any signs of affection, ached within her.
Sydney was lost in her thoughts, snapping out of them the second the growl in his voice hit her. “ It was nothing. ” she snapped, trying to convince herself with her own words. It was something, but what? The mission was easy, she’d done something similar once before, but that had even resulted in selling a story to it’s full length. The hand around her waist pulled a gasp from her throat, her footing causing her to stumble into him as the timing was perfect with Darlene and Marcus coming towards them. Had he seen them first?
Pale hues closed with the hitch of her breath. Her heart pounding in her chest with his words holding much more than a warning to her. It was a promise. The act was gone as the brunette held her hands to his chest, the distance between them next to nothing. “ Sark— ” the whisper cut short by their previous company. Frustration and relief played hand in hand as the woman pressed her forehead to his cheek, her sigh echoing in the space between them. Fingers straightened out his shirt as the southern accent found it’s way to the tip of her tongue. “ I’m sorry, we just can’t seem to keep our hands off of each other. ” the truth sold in the way she stayed in his touch,
Her body language told a story that was tough for Sark to fully swallow. There was no reason for her to be faking attraction while their targets weren’t focusing on them. It intrigued him, to say the least. True, he was dashing and handsome, but she knew him and what he was capable of in the name of the almighty dollar bill. Hero types such as Sydney didn’t usually allow their base animal instincts to dictate their behavior. But what if... Smirk widened at the delicious thought. Perhaps this would be more fun than he’d first imagined? “If that was merely nothing, I cannot imagine what something would have been.” Oh, yes, he totally could.
When she stumbled into him, Sark held her with a dominating touch that maintained a hint of gentleness. Observing her so close, it was clear how smitten she was. The redness across her cheeks, the way she said his name in that breathy whisper that he wouldn’t mind hearing again in private. Though, now he was curious as to what she was about to say. Unseen by the others, a hand snaked along her body to grip her ass, giving it a playful squeeze before getting back into character. “Yeah, this one, she needs it at least five times a day or phew, she gets cranky, let me tell you.” His grin rivaled that of a Cheshire cat’s. “But I wouldn’t have it any other way, nope.”
And now, now they still had to get through dinner, as the timer in the kitchen went off, reminding him. Sark, knowing what he knew, would have to sit there, behaving until they finished eating. Or, maybe not? “Chow time, finally.” Attention returned to her, baby blues filled with innocence that contradicted the doublespeak in his tone. “I’m parched. Aren’t you, darlin’?” After leading her over to the table and pulling her chair out, he took the seat next to her. As their hosts went about the kitchen, preparing plates and cups, he leaned over to whisper, “I intend to make this a meal you will not soon forget, love. Think of this as acting practice, if you wish...” And just in case she hadn’t caught on to his salacious plan, she’d soon feel a warm hand on top of her thigh, dipping dangerously close to the heat between her legs in demonstration. Gaze fixated on her, waiting to relish her reaction. Yes, behaving wasn’t in his vocabulary today, it appeared.
