MEDIA IN OUR EVERYDAY LIFE
MEDIA DEVELOPMENT TIMELINE AND HISTORY
WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE MEDIA LITERATE INDIVIDUAL?
As an individual in this day and age, we have easy access to all sorts of media. This enables us to access an abundance of information and data that are considered to be essential. Media has been a big part of our daily lives not that it makes our works a lot easier, but also shapes us into a more capable individual. With those bold statements, it surely sounds that media is all positives and doesn’t have any flaws, well, that’s true in a sense, but that’s not always the case. There are instances where people use media to condone their ill intentions, with that said, now comes the term “Media Information Literacy”. What does it take to be Media Information Literate individual?
Being Media Information Literate Individual means that an individual knows the effects of his/her actions regarding media information, checking the validity and knowing when and where to use information are an important aspect of being Media Literate. Due to the vast world of media, people everywhere have access to information that is confidential and pivotal. Having great accessibility also means greater responsibility, so is to say that having control over one’s self and being Media Literate is a vital characteristic that we should have. In order to be Media Literate Individual, one should have respect toward others and acknowledge that everyone have their own opinions.
According to UNESCO, censorships and limitations aren’t enough to stop the misuse of media by people; it goes to show that learning to be respectful is the first step towards being Media Literate Individual. A lot of experts in psychology say that change comes from within, if we want to be media literate, we need to start the change within us and have respect toward others.
Humans have the tendency to be selfish at times, that comes out naturally, and we tend to drag others down when we felt that it’s convenient. It’s easy for us to judge others without self-reflecting our own flaws, but that doesn’t mean we can’t change. Learning respect will lead us to change, and being Media Smart will widen our range of thought. Media is a valuable aspect of our lives, so we must be wise with its usage. I’ve stated that having self-control and respect are the best ways to be Media Literate Individual, but what will it really take to be Media Smart? What does it take to be Media Literate Individual?
